Artist Statement
My project for my photography class consisted of a block of
wood, linoleum, and spray paint. We basically had to choose 3
symbols that we feel like illustrates our identity and how we think
we are. After we found our 3 symbols we had to take a portrait
picture of ourselves and then create a stencil with our 3 symbols
integrated into our portraits. Then when we are done with the
stencil we glued our linoleum onto our wood block and spray
painted the stencil over the linoleum. Once we have our outline
on our wood block we carve out the negative space. The projects
purpose was for us to show our identities to the people who are
looking at our carvings. It also kind of makes you think of who you
are.
I used 3 symbols for my art block/ linoleum. I added 2 birds
on each side of my head pulling my hair upward, a dagger
straight down from my forehead to the beginning of the arch of
my nose, as well as my mouth completely empty. I included 2
birds on each side of my head pulling my hair upward because I
wanted it to represent me improving and going to the top as in a
vertical grind to the top. I included a dagger straight down from
my forehead to the beginning of the arch of my nose because I
wanted it to serve as a way of showing that I am at times a very
aggressive person. I carved out my entire mouth as a way to show
that at times I can be an awkward/quiet person. My symbols in my
culture dont mean the same things that I want them to mean so
that is why I will not be including them. I feel like I got the most
influence from the famous surrealist artist, Salvador Dali.
The reason I made this work is on account of this is what
truly matters to the venture. We need to have components, and
images, that speak to us, and place them into our last item. In the
event that my fine art were to be seen I wouldnt need it to be in
a major historical center, I would need it to be found in one of
those group galleries in light of the fact that as I would see it

won't not be the best place but rather it would be a begin. I dont
anticipate that my group of onlookers will comprehend my work of
art because of the images that I picked, and now and then
individuals can get confounded on occasion. In my fine art I
utilized surrealism in each of the 3 of my images, which both
Salvador Dali, and Frida Khalo utilized.
In conclusion, I have been influenced by Salvador Dali, and
Frida Khalo. I feel like these artists influenced me the most
because they do surrealist portrait like paintings and my work
relates to that or is at least in that category. Plus I got influenced
by Salvador Dali on all 3 of the symbols I used on my linoleum. So
to cap it all up, our goal of the project was to use symbols that we
felt like represented our identities by carving out the negative
space
