Q&A with Fergus Noble, Swift Navigation CTO

Fergus Noble is co-founder and CTO of Swift Navigation, where he focuses on technology strategy and architecture.
Prior to Swift, he obtained his BA and MSc degrees in Physics from the University of Cambridge. Fergus moved from
the UK to California to work for Joby Energy on GPS systems and Flight Software teams for high-altitude wind turbines.
In 2012, he co-founded Swift Navigation, with the goal of developing a new, open, highly-accurate GPS receiver for
autonomous vehicles. In May of 2016, Fergus was honored by Inc. Magazine as one of their 30 Under 30 Most Innovative

may not arise until 2018. Therefore in the next two years the
constellation will be sustained with this type of satellite.
The performance of the on-board atomic frequency standards
(AFS) carried by the latest GLONASS-M satellites is considerably
better than that of those carried by the first GLONASS-M
satellites (see FIGURE 1). Their relative one-day stability has improved
from 10-13 to 2 4 10-14,
contributing to smaller signal-

by Harris, Rockwell Collins and Honeywell.
Were at an historic turning point for this dinner, and
Id like to acknowledge three people who are responsible
for all of us being here.
Were honored to have Brad Parkinson and his wife
Ginny join us tonight. Brad led the team that made GPS happen in the first place.
Phil Ward is here. He developed the first GPS receiver for the commercial market
in 1982.
Thats the Space Segment, the User Segment, and with Lt. Col. Andrew Zinn of
the GPS Directorate, we have the Control Segment as well.
Further, we have guests tonight from the U.S. State Department, representing GPS
and GNSS interests at the highest levels of the U.S. government. We have officials
from the European Space Agency, the European Commission, from BeiDou, and
had it not been for airline scheduling we would have had GLONASS as well.
The global industry is well represented here, by our sponsors:

with many complexities on getting this far. Androids
foundation is open-source software and the open-

step for us to provide these raw measurements to the
community. We have a new paradigm of businesses,
and most of them rely on location and context as one
of their key elements.

US Navy Awards Raytheon $255M for Precision Landing

T
he U.S. Navy has awarded Raytheon Company a $255
million contract for development and production
readiness of its next generation precision landing
system. The Joint Precision Approach and Landing System
(JPALS) uses GPS satellite navigation to provide more
accurate landing guidance for manned and unmanned
aircraft, replacing radar and beacons used in older systems.
The contract includes options that could bring the value
to $270 million.
JPALS improves navigational alignment prior to approach,
allowing aircraft to land on any aircraft carrier or amphibious

Towering Solutions
Using GNSS, BIM and a Head-up Display for Speed, Safety

M
odern tower cranes can reach a height of more
than 200 meters. They operate in a complicated,
chaotic and constantly changing environment.
This creates obstacles for the crane operator:
poor visibility and dead angles places the operator cant see.
Aiming to solve the problem is the the Augmented
Crane Navigation System (ACNS) project. ACNS provides
innovative intelligent operation of tower cranes on
construction sites through the integration of highly accurate
navigation receivers and a powerful processor unit.
Polish researcher Piotr Krystek took home the DLR Special
Prize from the European Satellite Navigation Competition
(ESNC) for ACNS, which is designed to increase efficiency
and safety at construction sites.
Using ACNS, the position of the crane elements can
be determined and oriented using four to five low-cost
yet highly precise Galileo or GNSS receivers. The central
processor calculates the best possible route for load
management. In addition to the position values of the
various satellite navigation receivers, the digital model of the
physical structure or Building Information Model (BIM) is
used. Using a head-up display, the visualization is projected
directly onto the crane operators field of view to enable easy
and precise navigation.
