Bloom Ball Activity

Instructions: Complete the 12 activities outlined below.


In activities 3 to 11, choose ONE of the options listed
or discuss an alternate option with your teacher. As you
prepare each face of your bloom ball make sure that
you include the title indicated in each activity. The bloom ball will be
assembled once all activities are complete.
1. Research (required)
a. Create a profile of the author of your book. Include personal
information as well as a list of selections he/she has written.
2. Interest (required)
a. Choose a topic of interest such as an object, idea, or place from the
novel and provide 4 or 5 interesting facts about the topic.
3. Character Complete ONE of the following:
a. An acrostic poem about a character from the novel.
b. A Venn diagram to compare and contrast two characters or one of the
characters and yourself. Each section of the Venn diagram should have
four points or details.
c. A yearbook snapshot of a character. Include a picture and some of the
following: nickname; activities, clubs or sports they were involved in; a
quote the character chose that shows something about him and what
is important to him/her; favorite music/ hobbies; pet peeve; voted
"most likely to......." by his/her class; character's ambition(plan after
high school).
4. Character Extension - Complete ONE of the following:
a. Design an advertisement for something one of the characters would
like to have or is trying to get rid of. Examples: a soldier might be
looking for rubber boots or a young boy may want to put his spiders up
for adoption.
b. Explain two characteristic of a main character. Evidence form the text
must support your response.
c. Draw a picture of what one of the characters might dream about and
tell why it is important to him or her. Cite 2 examples from the text to
support your picture.
5. Setting - Complete ONE of the following:
a. Draw a map to illustrate the setting of the novel. If the setting changes
(for example, indoors, outside, on a street, in a park, etc.), make sure
each place is included.
b. Describe the setting of the novel, including the time, place and
circumstances in which it takes place.
c. Illustrate a scene from the novel.
6. Plot - Complete ONE of the following:

a. Draw a diagram to explain the plot of the novel. Include details to show
what happens in each of the 5 parts: exposition, rising action, climax,
falling action and resolution.
b. Write a summary of the plot of the novel.
c. Create a timeline to outline the most important events in the novel. To
maximize your writing space, place the events on both the upper and
lower sides of the line.
7. Emotion - How does the novel make you feel? Complete ONE of the
following:
a. If you were to paint a picture to explain how this novel makes you feel,
what would you include? What colors would you use? Explain the
reasons behind your choices.
b. Identify a song that creates a feeling similar as this novel. Include
three lines from the song and explain how they create a feeling similar
to what you experienced while reading.
c. Write a diary entry from the point of view of a main character to
express how they are feeling after a big event in the novel.
8. Conflict may be internal, external or interpersonal. Complete ONE
of the following:
a. Write a short letter to a character warning him or her about key
upcoming events that he or she may have to face. Include your advice
on how to manage the situation.
b. Choose a conflict from the novel and explain how it was resolved.
Explain why you were or were not satisfied with this resolution?
c. Explain how a conflict caused a character to change throughout the
novel.
9. Theme Complete ONE of the following:
a. Identify or design a symbol to represent something you learned from
reading this novel. Explain the meaning of the symbol.
b. Explain a lesson(s) one of the characters in the novel learns from
his/her experience.
c. Design a poster to advertise what can be gained from reading this
novel.
10. Representing - Complete ONE of the following:
a. Design a bulletin board to stimulate class interest in reading your
novel.
b. Create the postcard that the author sent to your reading group
encouraging you to read the novel. Include the message that the
author wrote on the back of the postcard.
c. If you were to put together a bag of stuff about your novel, what would
you include? Draw the bag and its 4 or 5 items. Include an explanation
of how each item is connected to the novel.
11. Journal Writing Complete ONE of the following:
a. Sometimes we are pulled toward one or two characters in the story. We
identify with them or feel sympathy for them. With which character do
you feel most connected? Why?

b. It is not unusual to wish that our lives were more like the lives of
characters in stories. How would you change your own life to be more
like someone in the novel?
c. You have been chosen to spend a day with one of the characters.
Which character would you choose? Why? What would you do?
12. Connections Complete the following:
a. Explain two connections you made while reading the novel. How did it
help you understand the novel? What type of connection did you
make?
