NOVA Elements Exploration

Today you will demonstrate how protons, neutrons, and electrons combine to make different elements.

These different elements combine to make different molecules. These different molecules then combine to

make everyday items.

In order to do this, first, download and open the NOVA Elements app. This can be found of Self Service.

Click on Play.

Choose what item you would like to build.

Banana
1. Item I am building: ________________________________.

2. Your item is made of several different molecules. This program has given you three or four examples of

molecules found in your item. List the different molecules below.

1. Fructose

2. Vitomen b6

3. Vitomen c
4 (if necessary).

Eliments
3. What are molecules made of? ________________________

4. In order to build your (answer from question 3), we need two pieces of information. The two pieces of
information needed are.
1. Atomic number

2. Atomic mass

5. How do you use this information to build (answer from question 3)?
________________________________________________________________________________________
They will use those to subtract the atomic number from the atomic
________________________________________________________________________________________
mass to find the number of neutrons
________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________
6. Name three elements necessary to build your item and complete the chart below.

Element Name Atomic Atomic Mass Protons Neutrons Electrons

Number

Carbon 6 12 6 6 6

Oxygen 8 16 8 8 8

1 1 1 0 1
Hydrogen

7. In the banana example, the molecules Fructose and Vitamin C both use only hydrogen, carbon, and
oxygen atoms. How can these molecules be different, yet require the same elements?
________________________________________________________________________________________
They could have the same eliments but they could be in a
________________________________________________________________________________________
different order or they don't have the same amount of that
________________________________________________________________________________________
eliment.you could have 8 oxygen in one but the other one has
________________________________________________________________________________________
12 oxygen.
8. Use the word bank below to complete the flowchart. Words from the word bank in (parenthesis) should
be replaced with your actual examples from questions 6 and 7. For example (Element 1) can be
replaced with Carbon.
