Diversity Purpose Statement

Teachers use technology to facilitate understandings among students

of diverse cultural backgrounds and learning styles in many ways. A specific

technique that is highly beneficial is utilizing Howard Gardners Multiple

Intelligence Theory. All eight intelligences are used to process information

and can be activated in a cultural setting to solve problems or create

products that are of value in a culture (Sariolghalam, Noruzi, Rahimi, 2010,

p. 162). Problem solving lays the groundwork for achieving new knowledge

that can be used to help the culture of the surrounding community (Helding,

2009). A piece of technology can be used to meet the needs of more than

one learning style, and one learning style can be reached by more than one

piece of technology. An overlap of each can happen, helping the teacher to

plan a lesson more effectively.

With a Linguistic Intelligence, the teacher can record a video, tape

record or to write any comments or rebuttals they may have in response to

the lecture. The student has the ability to listen or re-listen to each lecture;

gives the teacher an open invitation to create in-class group or personal

assignments that can include writing stories, researching information for an

in-class debate, or creating poetry that fits the class topic. The Logical-

Mathematical Intelligence can utilize videogames and, can lead to learning

the basics of logic and critical thinking skills (Jackson, Gaudet, McDaniel, &

Brammer. 2009, p 73).

Per Musical Intelligence there is A simple method to encourage the

musical learners could include giving your students a list of vocabulary words

with their definitions and instruct your students to create a poem or song

using the words and definitions that were passed to them using synthesizers.

A good technology to use with musical learners is a software program that

synthesizes music into waves. These students benefit greatly by using their

musical talents to break down and rebuild melodies (McCoog, 2007, p. 26).

The Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence can engage your kinesthetic learners in

being the teachers helper, specifically assigning a technology helper

position, can help the student learn more about the topic at hand.

Spatial (Visual Intelligence can be represented with a mind map while

utilizing the Word program, or online resources such as Mindmeister. Visual

learners can research famous quotes and images and then give a short

introspective speech (McCoog 2007, p. 26) that will include the linguistic

learners in the classroom. Students can perform an internet search to locate

hundreds of quotes and pictures. Once their research is complete, they can

share their work with the use of presentation software. This activity allows

the spatial student to ex

press his or her creativity while still covering necessary content. Naturalistic

Intelligence learners can be as easy as rotating the technological tools used

in the classroom to change the immediate environment. An example would

be to change the presentation format each time the class meets. The

students heightened senses may help them notice similarities, differences

and changes in their surroundings more rapidly than others (Wilson, 1997)

giving the naturalistic learner an environment that is not mundane or boring.

With an Interpersonal Intelligence, technology would include the use of

cloud or webcam technology to implement a group assignment. Whereas

Intrapersonal Intelligence learners will have technological choices for the

interpersonal learner could include computer based journaling, concept

mapping, and internet research, giving a variety of final products for each

assignment. The on-line classroom or student blog can be a great tool for the

intrapersonal learner. Class participation in the on-line classroom and blogs

can create a learning environment free from in-person assaults and

disagreements that may prevent the intrapersonal learner from being

involved.
