What is an internship?
An internship is an opportunity for students to receive valuable experience while
achieving academic outcomes under the guidance of a business mentor who is
experienced, knowledgeable, and capable of advising the student. Students
reinforce their education by gaining real world practice, strengthening technical
abilities, instilling ethical and collaborative behaviors, and building confidence
while developing realistic expectations about the workforce domain. In exchange,
the organization receives quality work from an academically y prepared and
business world ready UTC College of Business (COB) student trained to be
professional, knowledgeable, communicative, and helpful.
Students must have a junior standing and meet a minimum grade point
average requirement of 2.75.
Students must have approval from both the internship coordinator and the
department head.
In order to receive credit, Marketing students must have already taken and
made a grade of a C or higher in MKT3130 AND at least three hours of an
additional marketing course.

Where do I begin?
1. After deciding that your class schedule can accommodate an internship,
(most offices are open weekdays from 8-5pm) you need to start searching
for one. There are many websites that can be useful when looking for an
internship such as: Monster, Snagajob, Indeed and even Linkedin.
However, UTC does have their own website where employers post
openings for interns. That website can be accessed here:

The Mocs Links website is the most dependable when searching for an
internship because employers are specifically seeking out UTC Marketing
students (Mocs Links can also be used for other majors as well). You can
also schedule an appointment with a career advisor here:

2. At this point, you should have your resume polished and ready for the
interview for the internship. It is a good idea to only include experience
relevant to that internship. The UTC College of Business offers resume tips
and even resume doctor sessions on their website to help students before
interviewing for a job or internship. You can access this website for tips or

3. After you have landed your internship and discussed with your employer
the opportunity to receive credit, you will need to contact Jaclyn York, the
internship coordinator. You can contact her by your UTC email at jaclyn-
wooten-york@utc.edu.
4. Jaclyn York will send all of the forms needed to get your Marketing
internship approved by the department head, Beverly Brockman.
Internships will need to be approved by the department head by a deadline
announced by the College of Business. This deadline is usually the first
couple of weeks after the semester begins. These documents include:
Academic Internship Application Form (signed by Student and
Mentor/Supervisor/HR)
Educational Outcomes Form & Internship Agreement (detailed, filled out,
and signed by Mentor/Supervisor/HR)
A separate document with a Detailed Position Description (through
company website or directly from Mentor/Supervisor/HR)
5. After your Marketing internship is approved, you will receive an email with
a course CRN number and instructions on how to add the academic
internship class to your schedule. You will be given an override for the
Marketing class Marketing 3900. The system will default to one credit
hour, so you will need to type in 3. In order to receive 3 credit hours, you
will need to work 135 hours during the semester.
6. Now that the process of registering for an internship is done, you arent
finished! There are requirements throughout the semester that need to be
met as well in order to receive credit. Each of the seven required
assignments are listed below:
o at least one entry towards the end of the internship that reflects on
identified strengths and weaknesses
o at least one entry regarding advice you would give to an intern
coming into the position you are currently in
o Be a Team Player Most likely, you will be at the company for a short
time so it is important to make a great impression. Remember that
an internship is also an opportunity to network, develop contacts
and references, and in some cases be used as a rehearsal for a
permanent position in the future. Act accordingly!
o And please read this article to get some ideas on how to lay the
groundwork for converting your internship into a career!
o In most cases, your employer has agreed to the following: (1) to allow
the student access to the particular experiences outlined in the
position description provided to the Internship Coordinator (2) that
the outcomes stated therein will be achieved over the term of the
internship and (3) to present no obstacles to student attendance of
scheduled classes. If you feel your employer is violating this
agreement, please try to alleviate the situation on your own, but alert
me if your concerns are not addressed. I will attempt to assist. Please
note that being dismissed from your internship for cause will make
you ineligible to gain credit for the experience.
Academic Internship Information: Students
Purpose An academic internship is an opportunity for students to receive valuable experience while achieving academic outcomes

behaviors, and building confidence while developing realistic expectations about the workforce domain. In exchange, the
organization receives quality work from an academically prepared and business world ready UTC College of Business (COB) student
trained to be professional, knowledgeable, communicative, and helpful.
Choosingan Internship Internships should be relevant to your particular area of study within the College of Business and career
path interests. Internships should be paid so the student should be aware of what compensation is expected. Due state regulations,
we are unable to provide academic credit for internships located in: Alabama, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts,
Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, N. Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington, Wisconsin.
Academic Expectations Not all internships qualify for academic credit and not all student interns are eligible to receive academic
credit. Internship listings are available through the Internship Coordinator and you are welcome to find opportunities on your own.
Students must apply for internship credit before starting the internship. Credit cannot be given for past internships. Below is a set of
guidelines for your consideration - meet with the Internship Coordinator to discuss in detail.
o Internship Prerequisites Students must have junior standing (60 earned credit hours); meet a minimum cumulative GPA of
2.75 (employers often require a stronger GPA for candidacy); meet the approval of both the Internship Coordinator and
Department Head who hold the discretion to refuse credit, meet the upper level business credit prerequisites: Marketing
majors, prerequisite class is MKT3130 plus at least three hours of additional marketing courses - Entrepreneurship majors,
prerequisite class is ETR4300; Finance majors, prerequisite class is FIN3020 plus at least three hours of additional finance
courses; Accounting majors, prerequisite class is ACC3000 plus at least three hours of additional 3000 level Accounting
courses; Management majors, prerequisite class is MGT 3150 plus at least three hours of 3000 level Management courses.
o Credit Hours Students may seek to earn one to three hours of college credit through an internship. The number of credit
hours earned are based on the number of hours worked per semester: 1 credit hour =45 hours at work site; 2 credit hours =
90 hours on work site; 3 credit hours =135 hours on work site. A maximum of six credit hours can be earned per student
with no more than three hours earned per semester. If a student seeks more than three hours of credit through BUS3900,
the second internship position must either (a) change dramatically within the organization previously served and fall under a
different business mentor or (b) be with a separate organization. Students may apply a maximum of three credit hours
toward their concentration requirements while any additional hours will go towards upper level elective credit.
o Internship Process Submit the Academic Internship Application, Detailed Position Description, and Educational Outcomes
Form & Internship Agreement (most requiring collaboration with the employer) to gain approval. These documents are due
before 4pmon the Thursday before the week classes begin for the term in which credit would be applied. See the Internship
Requirements Sheet for more information. All mentioned documents are available through Blackboard/UTC Online.
o Internship Requirements To earn academic credit for the completed internship, students will be required to complete and
submit several assignments no later than a week before the last day of classes for the term in which credit will be applied.
These include a Resume Revision, 2-4 Page Paper, Presentation File, Reflection Journal, Professional Thank You Letter, and
the attendance of and presentation in the Internship Symposium (held during finals week of term in which credit would be
applied) which will be open to employers, faculty, staff, and COB students. Additionally, the student will secure an Intern
Evaluation Form and Proof of Hours Worked that will be completed by the employer. See the Internship Requirements Sheet
for more information. Please note: the students current job is not generally eligible for an internship and an unpaid
internship will not be eligible for credit due to DOL regulations. There are exceptions for non-profit agencies and international
internships.
Professional Expectations Internships are a great way to network and are also often known within businesses as the semester-
long interview. Additionally, student interns represent the UTC College of Business within our community. The following guidelines
will help the student perform in a manner that is conducive to future employability while speaking well of their alma mater:
o Assess Wisely It is important to perform an honest assessment of your abilities and the internship to ensure that you are
capable of performing the tasks that are required of the position and will be fulfilled in the position.
o Be a Professional Dress appropriately for the position (or one level up!), maintain confidentialities, and follow the policies,
rules and regulations of both the employer and UTC College of Business.
o Communicate Skillfully When communicating via e-mail, memos, phone, text etc. refrain from using informal methods
(i.e. short-hand in e-mails or jargon that may be unfamiliar) and always be respectful and courteous of colleagues.
o Understand Workplace Expectations Keep an open line of communication with your mentor. Ask questions. Sometimes
what is expected can be unclear and it will be up to the student to reach out for clarity.
o Be a Team Player Most likely, you will be at the company for a short time so it is important to make a great impression.
Remember that an internship is also an opportunity to network, develop contacts and references, and in some cases be
used as a rehearsal for a permanent position in the future. Act accordingly!
Please remember that, depending on your unique needs, you may choose to coordinate an internship that does not count for
credit as well. Both academic and non-academic internships are valuable on a resume!
