Course Description

This course is a general introduction to major movements in the arts from the late Eighteenth to the
Twenty-first centuries. It is designed for the beginning student and assumes no previous experience in
art or art history. The course will focus on painting and sculpture with reference to architecture and
decorative arts. In addition to an introduction to the major artworks the course will teach the
fundamental of visual analysis and the language used to describe works of art.

Course Objectives

Apply the language of art history in discussions and writing.


Describe the stylistic elements of select major art movements of the 19th through 21st
centuries.
Identify and describe the major importance of the main historic movements from the late
nineteenth century to present.
Compare, contrast, and classify how certain artworks relate to the historic and cultural context
in which they were made.
Apply historical knowledge of art history to describe and analyze artworks observed in a
museum or gallery.
