eliminate Code Case expiration dates effective March 11,2005. This means that
all Code Caseslisted in this Supplement and beyond will remain available for
use until annulled bv the ASME Boiler and Pressure VesselStandards Committee.

Use of Manual PhasedArray Ultrasonic Examination
Section V
Inquiry: Under what conditions and limitations may
a phased array ultrasonic examination be utilized per
SectionV, Article 4 when utilizing a single fixed beam
angle with manual aster scanning?
Reply: It is the opinion of the Committee that weld
examinationsmay be performed using a phased array
ultrasonic (PA-UT) techniqueutilizing a single fixed
beam angle with manual raster scanningprovided that
Article 4 and the following additionalrequirementsare
met:
(a,) Amplitude Control Linearity checksshall be per-
formed on each pulser-receivercircuit in the ultrasonic
unit.
(b) The focal lawl to be used during the examination
shall be usedfor calibration.
(c) In additionto the essentialvariableslisted in Table
T - 4 2 1, t h e f o l l o w i n g p a r a m e t e r ss h a l l b e c o n s i d e r e d
essentialvariables:
(1.) searchunit type, elementsize and number, and
pitch and gap dimensions
(2) focus range (identifying plane, depth or sound
path as applicable)
(d) In addition to the items required to be recorded
per T-492, the following additionalinformation shall be
recorded:
(1) searchunit type, elementsize and number.and
pitch and gap dimensions
(2) focal law parameters,including angle, focal
depth, and elementsused

the searchunit elementsand their time delays for both the transmitter
and receiverfunctions.

and nuclearcomponents,and inserviceinspectionfor pressureintegrity of nuclearcomponentsand transporttanks,and to interpretthese rules when questionsarise
regardingtheir intent,This Code does not addressother safetyissuesrelatingto the constructionof boilers,pressurevessels,transporttanks and nuclearcomponents,
and the inserviceinspectionof nuclearcomponents and transport tanks. The user of the Code should refer to other pertinentcodes,standards,laws, regulationsor
other relevantdocuments.
