Year 6 Newsletter

April 2017
Welcome back! April sees the start of your childs final term at Harris Primary School and Im sure that it will
be a very busy and successful one. SATs week will commence on Monday 8 th May. I will send home a reminder
of the timetable next week. The topic this half term is Art Attack. This will be linked to many areas of the
curriculum and will allow the children to learn more about the arts and research areas that are of particular
interest to them. A parents briefing for Robinwood will be held later this term and I will send home details of
this closer to the time.

Literacy
This half-term we will begin by continuing to maintain our knowledge of all the
grammar terms and understanding exactly what the questions are asking! We
will also keep exploring and analysing challenging texts to improve the childrens
understanding of difficult vocabulary. Following this, we will then begin to look
at Spy stories, specifically focusing on the skill of writing with a flashback, and
we will also look at play-scripts.
Ways to help
Continue to develop your childs vocabulary, through reading with them regularly, and discuss key
vocabulary and punctuation & grammar terminology with your child so they retain their knowledge.
Maths
We will begin the term consolidating fractions, decimals and percentages specifically how to
calculate using fractions and then we will also revise division and problem
solving strategies. Following this we will then continue to learn about
measures in more detail and shape including problem solving practically.
Ways to help Continue to practice instant recall of all multiplication tables.
The children will continue to complete their SATs booklets independently
and supporting your child with any misconceptions or corrections will aid
their learning. Use IXL at home to build on their understanding of key
questions.
Science Animals including Humans
This term we will begin by continuing our Evolution topic and then we will begin
to look at functions of the human body, including the respiratory and
circulatory systems, and comparing them to functions of different animals.
Ways to help Continue to discuss how the world evolves and changes.
Discuss the human body at home and what the already know about it.

Homework
For the next three weeks, Year 6 will continue to complete their SATs revision booklets for
their homework. Please make sure they go through their corrections and learn from the errors
they make. Check the blog regularly as the children and I will put up videos of the maths skills
and methods they need to practice and use when they complete their booklets. Following the
SATs the children will then return back to the menu homework sheets.
