Summary of Article #2

Title of Article: Online vs. On-Campus Learning in Teacher Education

This article examined a course, Behavior Management, taken by masters level college

students. Half of the class took the class online while the other half took it in the classroom. The

students taking this course were either interested in special education or social psychology. There

were 140 students who participated in the study and were a mix of ethnic backgrounds and

genders. Previous studies have shown that online courses are not as beneficial as classroom

courses due to the fact that they lack interaction between students in a learning environment. The

study was set up so that the students could choose what learning environment they prefer and not

be assigned randomly to a learning setting not of their choosing.

The study measured the students knowledge by using t-tests and ANOVA measurements

to average test scores, quiz scores, and assignment scores between the students in online versus

an in class setting. There was not a significant difference between the success of students in

either setting, therefore concluding that this course was a good fit for both an in class and online

course setting. Online courses like Behavior Management, as discussed in the article, is an

alternative to the typical classroom setting that not everyone has access to attend such as those in

rural areas or whose schedules do not line up with normal in class school hours. The limitations

to the study noticed that the only measurement of learning was through the assignments and

tests, so possibly adding a pre and post test would examine knowledge known before and after

the course to further analyze the success of the in class versus online school setting. A research

suggestion mentioned by the article would be for more studies to be conducted regarding

technology and how learning via the Internet can possibly be successful.
