Final Paper 2 of 2

After it had been snowing for several hours, I was driving my car through my neighborhood. I
tried to turn right when my car began to slide. The front wheels turned, but the back wheels slid
a couple of feet in the direction I had just been going. I eventually gained control of my car again
and directed the car in the direction I was trying to go.

The car kept going in the same direction because of the law of inertia. Since there was snow,
there wasn't enough friction between the tires and the road to turn the car immediately.

I was skating at the Classic Fun Center in Sandy this weekend ans as I would push on the
floor with my skates, my speed would increase. The floor was pushing back up on me with an
equal but opposite force. This is an example of the 'Action Reaction Forces' in Newton 3rd Law
we learned about in Chapter 5.

To every action there is always an opposed equal reaction.

My car gets really cold in the winter and sometimes has a hard time going in the
mornings. My car like all other Machines needs Energy for it to Work. When the car's engine is
cold a lot of energy is used to warm up the engine. This makes my car less Efficient because
more energy is being used to warm up the engine and less energy is being used to keep it
running. It's kinda sad. I use a lot of gas these days because its cold outside. Maybe if I would
wake up on time, I might have time to warm up my car before I start driving, but that's probably
not going to happen. =)

Yesterday I went bowling with my family. While we were there my brother had a brilliant
idea to send two bowling balls down the lane at the same time. He sent the two bowling balls
down the lane trying to keep the balls on their own side of the lane. Eventually, the two balls hit
in the middle, switched velocities, and went right into the gutter. We all learned that that was a
bad idea.

This was an example of Elastic Collision.

A couple days ago, I was babysitting my sister's kids, two girls age 7 and 5, and the kids
were getting board. I had an idea. I took 2 8-ounce baby bottles and filled one full of water and
filled the other half way. I asked the two girls which one they thought would hit the ground first if I
dropped them both from the same height at the same time. They of course both guessed the full
one would hit the ground first. I dropped the baby bottles and they were both in awe. I tried to
explain why they hit at the same time, but they just looked at me like they didn't understand a
word I was saying. At least they thought it was cool.

This test was very similar to Galileo's test with the spheres of mass and the the Leaning Tower
of Pisa (except with baby bottles).

I was watching a cartoon the other day. In the cartoon, everyone in the world jumped at
the same time and it shook the world. I saw it and immediately thought "that's impossible." I
thought about it and realized that everyone jumping at the same time wouldn't shake the world
because the people are internal to the system. Everyone jumping at the same time would not
cause the earth to shake.

When I'm walking to my car in the early afternoon this time of year, it's still really cold
outside. But when I get to my car it's like someone has warmed up the inside of my car for me
because it is so warm. This happens because of the Greenhouse effect. The Greenhouse effect
occurs when the suns energy is able to enter my car through the window, but is unable to exit
the car afterwards. In the summer this makes the car even hotter than it already is, but I really
appreciate the Greenhouse effect this time of year.

I was boiling water the other day and went off to watch tv. I forgot about the boiling water
and left it boiling for about 15-20 minutes. I suddenly realized that the water was still boiling and
jumped up and ran to the stove. The water was nearly gone. There was only about an inch or
two of water left and I was lucky to get there before the pan itself was roasted.

This is an example of Conduction and Convection. The stove heats the pan by using
Conduction, which is the transfer of heat through objects in contact. The water was being heated
by way of Convection, which is the transfer of heat through the movement of fluids. The water,
by way of Evaporation, was turned into a gas and left the pan.

I went to a cello recital last weekend and it reminded me of what I learned in Physics
from Chapter 21. As the cello player was playing, the strings of the cello were vibrating. The
vibrations were transferred to the cellos sounding board and then into the air. I've always loved
the sound the cello makes. It's nice to finally understand how the instrument is making this
wonderful music.

Not too long ago my cat had four kittens. After a couple of weeks three of the kittens
were walking around and were very active. There was one kitten that was lazy compared to the
others and stayed in the same spot for most of the day. I decided to call the lazy kitten Inertia,
because of its resistance to change of motion.

This year I planted flowers in pots around my house. They all sit at various window sills.
Having them behind windows protects them from any harmful infrared and ultraviolet light. The
window has a certain frequency that only visible light is able to match and pass through.
Because the window only allows some light to come through, I will have to make sure the
flowers get extra sunlight.

This last week we colored eggs for Easter. Before we colored the eggs they were white.
They were white because all the colors were being reflected off of the egg. We had several
different colors of dye. When we dyed an egg Blue, all the other colors were being absorbed and
blue was the only color being reflected, because Blue is an additive primary color. When we
dyed an egg Yellow, Red and Green were both being reflected because yellow is a
complementary color.
