At the beginning of the scene, teacher Gruwell affirmed that the last comment was what all the students
thought of each other, however Marcus aggressively claimed that she didnt know anything. To that affirmation,
Ms. Gruwell said that she evidently didnt know. That is why she demanded Marcus to explain it to her. He
continued being rude and refused to explain anything to his teacher. After that, the situation started being
completely haywire, and an Asian student asked if she even knew where they lived, and other student said that
black people had been there first, and then, he rudely made a classmate shut his mouth.
Trying to put order in the classroom, the teacher asked those complainer students if people coming from other
cultures like Latinos, Cambodians, blacks, and whites hadnt been there, everything would be better for each
one of them. To that question, most of the students agreed that life would be better.
Consequently, Ms. Gruwell told the students that those situations started with a drawing similar to the one she
found, and later on, some kid would die in a drive-by, never knowing what had hit him.
Ms. G seemed to have attempted to encourage reflection to no avail. Eva replied to her saying she didn't know
anything about them and she didnt know the pain they felt. She also stated that Ms. Gruwell didnt know what
they had to do and didnt even have respect for how they were living. Eva also added that the only thing her
teacher did was having them there to teach them what she called grammar shit and then, they would have to
go out there again with no significant change in their lives.
Ms. Gruwell continued the argument and rhetorically asked Eva whether she was trying to say she didnt feel
respected. Ms. G. didnt let Eva reply but told her that if she wanted to get respect, first she needed to give
respect.
Another student aggressively replied saying what Ms. Gruwell was saying was bullshit. He also asked the
teacher if he had to give his respect to her despite not knowing her, only because she was a teacher. He added
that he didnt know her and he wouldnt know whether she was a liar or a bad person standing up there. Then,
he insisted that he was not going to give his respect to her only because she was called a teacher.
Ms. Gruwell reminded the students she was a teacher regardless of color she was. Right after, Eva explained
that everything was about color; that it was about people deciding what they deserved, about people wanting
what they didn't deserve, about whites thinking they ran the world no matter what. Besides, she added she
really hated white people. Then, the teacher asked Eva if she also hated her. The student answered surely that
she did, although Eva didnt know the teacher, and right away the Latin girl claimed she knew what Ms. G
could do because of being white.
Eva complained crying that she had seen some white cops shooting a friend of hers in the back for reaching
into his pocket. She had also seen them breaking into her house in order to take her father for no reason.
However, Eva added that they could do that because they were white. That is why Eva exclaimed she really
hated white people on sight.
Finally, Ms. Gruwell asked Ben, who was the only white guy in the classroom, if he had anything to say. He
immediately begged her to let him get out of the room.

Living in a different culture

When living in a different culture, homesickness and missing your family and friends from home can be one of
the feelings you may encounter. However, it is not only a matter of what you feel, but it also has to do with how
people feel about you, and how you handle rejection or acceptance from people.
Feeling small issues like big catastrophes, as well as feeling isolation and loneliness can be some things
expected to occur at first. It is normal to feel stressed, frustrated and overwhelmed. However, seeking out
friends and groups of people who share interests similar to yours and people that can encourage you to make
part of social circles can help you start feeling like if you were at home.
Finally, when you are able to adapt your sense of humor to the culture in which you are living, your experience
there may turn out to have a better taste. It is important to know that this doesnt mean you will not encounter
some negative feelings anymore; this means that you will hopefully be in a stage of adaptation that will allow
you to handle those feelings in a wiser way.
