Case 2215
Alternative Rules for the Postweld Heat
Treatment of Finned Tubes
Section I

Inquiry: May electric resistance welded fins be ex-

empt from the postweld heat treatment requirements
of Table PW-39 for P-No. 4, P-No. 5A, P-No. 5B, P-
No. 5C, P-No. 6, and P-No. 7 base materials?

Reply: It is the opinion of the Committee that it is

not necessary that electric resistance welds used to
attach extended heat absorbing surfaces to tubes be
postweld heat treated provided the following require-
ments are met:
(a) The fin thickness is no greater than 0.125 in.
(3.2 mm).
(b) The maximum carbon content of the base metal
shall be restricted to 0.15%.
(c) The maximum tube diameter shall be 4 in. O.D.
(d) The finned tube shall be within the boiler setting.
(e) Prior to using the welding procedure, the manu-
facturer shall demonstrate that the heat affected zone
does not encroach upon the minimum wall thickness.
(f) This Case number shall be shown on the Manufac-
turers Data Report.
