Statement of Standard 2: Learning Differences
The teacher uses understanding of individual differences and diverse cultures and
communities to ensure inclusive learning environments that enable each learners development
(Professional Development in New Jersey 2014, pg 2).
Name of Artifact: Icebreaker
Date of Artifact: 2/27/2017
Course: Education Field Experience EDUC 230-01
Rationale Statement:
For this artifact I had to come up with an icebreaker for future classes that I teach.
Icebreakers are simple games that allow students and teachers get to know each other. For my
icebreaker I decided to go with the idea of having my students create nametags. Along with
writing their names down they would have to come up with two to three facts about themselves
or things they like. They would then have to draw these things on their nametags and share their
creations with the class. This specifically relates to the standard under 2.iii.2 which states the
teacher respects learners as individuals with differing personal and family backgrounds and
various skills, abilities, perspectives talents, and interests (Professional Development in New
Jersey 2014, pg 3). By creating these drawings that hold value and meaning to them on their
nametags will show how different these students are. They all have different personalities and
experiences, and this will come through with their drawings by showing what they like.
What I learned about being a teacher is that I really need to be aware of the different
backgrounds my students come from. It is important to get to know and understand people,
especially since I want to create a classroom that doubles as a safe space for my students.
Finding out three things that each of my students care about really starts to open the door to who
they are as people. While I am in the classroom I do not expect all of my students to have the
same three drawings. In fact, I only think maybe two students will have the same drawing
maximum. Different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences shape what people like and my
students will not have the same experiences and backgrounds. Understanding that all of my
students are different in their own ways in imperative to being a teacher, and I believe this
icebreaker will help students show how unique they are.
I definitely plan on using this icebreaker for my future classes. At the start of class every
semester I will have my students make these name tags that they will have on display at their
desk. This icebreaker will allow them to get to know their peers and me while incorporating art.
There are not many icebreakers that actually have art; in fact, most of them just have students
listing off facts about themselves. This icebreaker will definitely come in handy for my future
classes.
