Pub News
We are pleased to report that the Yew Tree at
Ednaston has reopened in late March after being
closed since New Year's Day. We don't have detailed
information about the new regime, but hope that it
will return to the vibrancy that it had gained in the
year prior to closure.
Both The Horns and The Coach & Horses in
Ashbourne have again undergone management
changes in late March/early April, after short tenures
from the previous operators.
The Bridge in Ashbourne has just completed a
external spruce-up and looks very smart once again.
Branch News
During our March meeting at the Bowling Green, we The Yew Tree, Ednaston
welcomed Steve Barton, chairman of our
neighbouring sub-branch in the Staffordshire
Moorlands. Discussions were held to outline proposals
to work closely together, along with the Uttoxeter
sub-branch, on ventures such as a planned joint social
event to be held in the summer and to co-operate in
promoting events within each sub-branch such as our
respective beer festivals. Details and plans will be
circulated to all members in the three branches as
soon as we have worked them out. Any comments or
suggestions would be most welcome, initially
directed through the email address at the top of this
page.
Apologies are due to any inconvenience caused by
the late venue switch for our March meeting. We have
re-planned the original venue for a later meeting.
Branch Beer Festival 2017
The Horns, Ashbourne
We can now confirm that the dates for our 5th Beer
Festival will be Thursday 21st - Saturday 23rd
September, returning to Ashbourne Town Hall.
Further details will be shared as soon as we arrange
them.
Diary Dates
All meetings start at 8pm unless otherwise stated

John Thompson
Led Countys Brewing Revival
T here are upwards of sixty breweries today, so it hardly seems
plausible that for much of the 1970s Derbyshire was bereft of
commercial brewing. The last coppers to be fired were in brew pubs
the Exeter Arms, Derby and the Nags Head above Belper Market
Place, circa 1970. All this changed, however, when John Thompson
(pictured) launched JTS XXX to celebrate the Queens Silver Jubilee
at his eponymous pub in Ingleby over the Whitsuntide weekend of
1977.
John was a market gardener who sold his wares on Derbys ancient
Morledge market and, ever the entrepreneur, the converted ground
floor of his 15thC farmhouse home was granted an on licence in 1969.
Also pictured is Johns wife, Ann, who inspired a continental style,
bottom fermented Lager named after her, and this, too, was brewed in
an outbuilding on the site. It was, therefore, apt that John should be
invited to open the inaugural Derby City Charter Beer Festival in April
1978 and the fruity, full bodied, medium strength bitter went down John Thompson with wife Anne
