Research Essay

Automobiles have changed a lot in the past five decades. The skills and training needed

has also changed with it. Some mechanics didn't understand the difference between working in a

shop and working in a dealership with a good wage. The answer is this, in a shop people deal

with different cars and their problems and in a dealer is in one specific company. Like for

example chevy, they have there own mechanics to work on just chevy cars and ford has there

own people working on just ford. In a regular auto mechanic shop they work on different types

of cars so its easier to find a shop for someone to fix your car but with experience (skills) too, it

can help get better wages. In this career it is fun to understand other cars and it helps people

become a better auto mechanic. These are some ways it could help to become a successful

auto mechanic, understanding the economically side of the job, being well educated, gain

tons of experiences

Working in a shop the salary would be higher than working in a dealer and plus when

exploring and figuring out other vehicles with the same problem but, different ways to fix it.

Some are easy and some are a little complicated to fix. For example with alternators on regular,

basic cars are easy to come off, with the tools necessary, but in other cars like the most specific

one in this case nissan. Its complicated and it takes a while to remove it and replacing it with a

new alternator and it takes like about two hours when in other cars it takes less than an hour just

to replace it. In a dealer they work in one specific company like ford, dodge, toyota, honda,

lincoln, etc. So it's pretty much easier and in this case people who want to work in a dealer as a

mechanic, they learn fast with time because of working with the same car company and mostly

know everything with with the car and when they pretty much have the same parts on all year

cars from one company. According to an interview from Jason Klinger who works in a dealer

company at Borgman Ford Mazda center and has been working their for more than 10 years.

If people decide to start their own shop or decide to work in a shop, the other questions that was

asked a lot was, what is the most frustrating part with dealing with customers when charging

them for fixing the problem? People don't like spending too much in their car especially when

the problem was fixed and it took less than an hour and it's more than twenty dollars. According

to an interview with Antonio Temaj, he said When they ask for the part that was wrong and

what they did to fix it but yet they don't understand but they ask . So he is talking about how

customers ask for questions if its true. If that was the problem because of trust issues and when

they don't know what that does and it makes them waste time because of explaining it.

So the education needed to become a auto mechanic is, it takes two years of training to

become an auto mechanic. Most shops require auto mechanics to complete training or schooling

past high school. Every auto mechanic check and repair trucks and automobiles (Education

Career Articles, 2013). For this reason, auto mechanics should enroll into training programs that

covers a wide range of coursework and it may help them to become better than what they were

back then from just a regular auto mechanic. If they get all the education that's needed, it could

also help them get better and faster from those two years of hard studying. The education could

also help if some people decide to own a shop. They will need a mechanics license in order to

have a shop on their name and have employees working for them as a regular job.

The skills of an auto mechanic are all different. Some mechanics develop skills to work

on the engine and some develope skills on moving parts. Some examples of moving parts are

brakes, shocks and wheels. In the automotive repair industry learning skills through learning by

example is important. When new mechanics come in and they often need help when they start

working for the first time. Sometimes they get nervous and mess up, but then when they ask for

help, and they observe other experienced mechanics, they can learn more skills. According to the

website of Wyoming Technical Institute, The days of the uneducated grease monkeys are over.

Computers are integrated with autos, and the skills set means being able to use new technology

In this people start to develope skills and be more faster with replacing parts from a car. Some

pros are when knowing what to do when fixing a car and a con is when dealing with customers

for the payment.

In conclusion, this research project helped to better understand about how to pursue the

life goal of becoming an auto mechanic. People could start working on cars by replacing broken

parts with a new ones. For example, knowing how to fix parts like the brakes, the springs, and

the shocks. People also can do basic maintenance like change the oil or tires. However people

could learning, this project helped to understand what it takes to become a real auto mechanic.

Lastly, if a person wants to become a mechanic, they need to understand the cost advantage for

the education and for what tools they need to use.
