Lesson Title: Meeting Alma Flor Ada

1. Brief Overview of Lesson:

The author we will be studying for this author study is Alma Flor Ada. There will be
a lot of different things that the students will be learning about the Author. Like;
where she live, where she was born, when she started writing, what she writes about
and, much more. The students will do small readings on Alma Flor Ada, and what she
likes to do. There will be a corner in the classroom with picture of the author and
books that the Author has written. They will also look at the different books that she
has written and pick the one that they find the most interesting. The students will than
write three facts that they found interesting about Alma Flor Ada and why they found
it interesting.

2. Prior Knowledge Required:

Students will have to remember how the recall information from text they read. They
will use the strategies that they have learned throughout the years. If they need a
small refresher on how to find the relevant information we will stop and do a
minilesson. Students will have to use their knowledge of decoding and context clues.

These articles and interview will help the students research and find an understanding of
our author Alma Flor Ada.

5. Objectives/ Student Learning Outcomes:

Using the text provided, students will identify the relevant information need to answer the
questions asked.

Students will be able to orally share to the class their finding of the author.

6. Instructional Sequence:

Beginning:

The teacher will have the author study corner set up for the students when they
come in.
Once the students have arrived in the morning and have sat in their seats the
teacher will begin.
First, the teacher will explain that they will be begin studying an author named
Alma Flor Ada.
The teacher will also explain the author study corner that is set up for the students.
The author study corner is for the students to explore the types of books Alma
Flor Ada.
To begin the day students will go up to the author study corner row by row to look
at it and pick a non-chapter book to read silently at their seats.
Once they finish reading the students will get a sheet of paper to answer three
questions.
o 1. Why did you choose the book?
o 2. Did you like the book?
o 3. Please explain why or why not you did or did not like the book?
The students will all have a chance to explain their answers.
Before the main lesson starts the teacher will inform the students that they will
transition to the literacy period where they will be doing research on Alma Flor
Ada.

Middle:
The teacher will be use the mnemonic device 1..,2..,3.., eyes on me. Students
should respond with 1..,2.., eyes on you.
The teacher will now begin explaining the lesson.
The teacher will pass out the worksheet (shown above) and tell them these are the
questions that they will be looking for throughout the readings.
The students will then be handed the articles they will be reading to find out more
information about Alma Flor Ada.
The students will read the articles independently to start.
Then the students will turn and talk and discuss their findings to each other.
They will have about 30 minutes to answer the questions and discuss with peers.
After the teacher will write all the answers on the board and they will create a
study guide to reference to them with.
End:
Once the students share their answers and they are corrected if there are any
wrong answers.
The teacher will then ask the students what they found interesting about Alma
Flor Ada.
The students will share what they found and if they read anything that they liked
but, was not a question on the sheet given them.
The teacher will then wrap up the lesson by letting the students know what will be
doing tomorrow.

7. Provisions for Diverse Learners:


Students will have a variety of book levels to choose from to read at the
beginning of class.
When students start to read the articles they will have tools to help them
following along.
Students will be able to highlight important parts of the article to help answer
the questions.
Students will be able to work together with one another.
The teacher will let students share who want to.
8. Plan to measure Student learning/Assessment:
The teacher will use the answers that the students give from the independent
reading that they do at the beginning of class. (This will show the teacher if
they were actually reading. Also if they are truly interested in learning about
the author.
The teacher will look listen to the students turn and talk after their finds of
Alma Flor Ada during the article reading. Then use their answers if they were
able to go back to the text to get information.

9. Evidence of Student Learning/Candidate Learning;

The students will answer the study guide, and the teacher will analyze how they answered
to see if the students are able to comprehend what they have read.
