How to calculate the Size of a Sewage Treatment Plant : Step by Step Process

Technical Terms Used:

KLD : Kilo Litre Demand

Cum : Cubic Meter

STP : Sewage Treatment Plant

STP Calculation! Every plumbing engineer search internet to know about this

But many of them will end up in wrong calculations, so we had tried our best to give you a
methodical procedure to find out the total size needed for your sewage treatment plant.

First of all think about the total water requirement, the water required for the all the residents
inside that particular building. So there are some procedures to find out the total water
requirement, you have to follow some constants which are commonly using such as 8 Liter of
water as drinking for a person per day basis.

For a residential Project we can consider as follows:

150 liter total water per person, from that 100 liter will be used for the domestic purposes and 50
liter for the flushing purpose. Domestic purposes include drinking + washing + bath etc.
Flushing includes only the water closet flush out.
For Commercial spaces we can consider as follows:

70 liter total water per person, from that 45 liter will be used for the flushing purpose and the rest
25 liter for the domestic. OR on area basis 50Square meter/person

Like that for different projects we have charted the water demand according to it. So if you have
any doubt regarding the decision of water quantity per person or quantity/area, then feel free to
contact me through the comments or by email.

So here I will show you an example of Sewage Treatment Plant Calculation:

1. Checking the architectural layouts for getting a better understanding about the building.
At the beginning of the project we will not have any details of the total number of
residents inside a building, so we need to find out the total number of people which the
building can hold.
2. If you see 1BHK flat then we can assume here the total population of 1bhk flat will be 2
to 3 people so take 3 persons per 1bhk and 4 persons per 2bhk. Thereby we can find out
the total population of the building. See the image below for more clarification >>

1. Then daily basis we need to find out the total water requirement for the persons. It may
be in liters. 2000 or 3000 liters like that.
2. For the sewage treatment plant calculation we need to find out the domestic and flushing
water separately, such that 3500 liter will be the total water requirement for the residents
and 2000 will be the flushing. See the image below for more clarification >>

1. If we have 3500 liter domestic and 2000 liter flushing requirement then (3500+2000)
5500 will be the total water needed per day.
2. So our sewage treatment plant size will be equal to 75% of the domestic water plus 100%
of the flushing water.

STP Size = (0.753500+2000) = 4625 Liters/Day

STP Size = (4625/1000) = 4.63 Cum/Day

= 4.6 KLD
