Name: Kaylie Robison

Date:
Subject: Continents & Oceans
Length of Lesson: 60 90 min
Grade Level: 3rd Grade

Core Curriculum Objectives:

Standard 3
o Students will use geographic tools and skills to locate and describe places on
earth.
Objective 2
o Demonstrate geographic skills on a map and a globe.
Locate and label the following on a map of the world: the seven
continents, the five oceans, the poles, and the equator.
(Teaching in advance or preparation for upcoming unit on different cultures around the world.)

Common Core Objectives (ELA)):

Writing Standard 4
o With guidance and support from adults, produce writing in which the
development and organization are appropriate to task and purpose.

Learning Objectives:
Students will be able to locate and label the 7 continents and 4 oceans on a model map
independently.
Students will be able to use learned interesting facts on the continents and oceans to
participate in a game of Jeopardy as a whole class.
Students will be able to recall and write the names of the 7 continents and 4 oceans, an
interesting fact, and a continent or ocean they would like to visit as they complete a four-
square writing activity independently.

Language Objectives:
Students will be able to orally describe and identify the 7 continents and 4 oceans as we
practice and learn the continents and oceans song as a class.
Students will be able to orally name the continents and oceans as they compete in a game
of Jeopardy as a class and complete a four-square writing activity independently.
Students will be able to identify the continents and oceans in writing by creating their

** For ELLs**
Use cognates and pictures throughout presentation
Let ELLs pair up with a more English proficient
speaking peer who also speaks their native language.

Content/Activity: Use YES, NO T-Chart to

Establish objectives with the class. monitor on-task behavior
o Locate and label all 7 continents throughout the lesson.
o Locate and label all 4 oceans
o Complete 4-square writing assignment

Were going to work with 2 representations of the

Earth.
o A flat 1-D map
o Every table will have a 3D what?

We have some exciting games and activities, but first,

we need to prepare a model map.

Pass them out, when ready, put your eyes up here.

There will be a place to label EACH continent. As

scientist, we need to be very accurate. We want the
location accurate and the spelling accurate.

See if you can do it on your own, but I will keep this

model up on the board if you need some help.

** For ELLs**
Allow ELLs to write the names of the continents and
oceans in their native language.
Provide ALL students with a word bank to ensure
proper spelling.
75 min
Give ELLs the choice to work with a peer who
speaks the same language.
If students misuse globes,
Check to see if theyre right by color they will be taken away.
Put your finger on red

** For ELLs**
Attempt to say continents and oceans in Spanish
when checking the maps with students.
Pass out the globe.

o The rest of you find Africa on your model

Go through sequentially through continents and read

the interesting facts asking students to recall them for
the Jeopardy game passing the globe to a new person
each time.

** For ELLs**
Give ELLs their own paper copy of the facts of each
continent and ocean.
On the paper copy, include pictures and cognates.

Jeopardy Game
Now, you get a chance to use our interesting facts.
If we can get a total of 30 points, you can earn a little
surprise tomorrow. AS A CLASS Pull sticks.

** For ELLs**
Allow ELLs to work with a partner when picking and
answering Jeopardy questions.

4-Square Writing Activity:

Display 4-square writing activity on document reader.
Give directions.

** For ELLs**
Allow ELLs to write the continents and oceans in
their native language.
Let students draw a picture for the continent they
wish to visit and an interesting fact.
Closure:
Ask students to self-reflect:
o How did we do today?
o What helped us be successful learners?
o What did we do well?
5 min o What could we do better?

What are some keepers from todays lesson?

Assessment:
Formative Assessment:
o Check for accuracy on student maps.
o Observe engagement and attention during
interesting facts and Jeopardy game.
Point system on the 4-square writing activity:
o 7 points for continents
o 4 points for oceans
o 3-5 points for interesting facts
o 3-5 points for like to visit
o Extra points possible
o If students get 20 points theyll get a top-
notch sticker.
Checking for understanding throughout

** For ELLs**
Check their model map to see if they correctly
identified and labeled the continents and oceans. This
is a content objective and language objective. ELLs
would be allowed to write these names in their native
language.
ELLs four-square writing can be assessed in a similar
way. ELLs would be allowed to complete their
writing in their native language (writing the 7
continents and 4 oceans) and drawing pictures (an
interesting fact they learned, and continent theyd
like to visit).

Technology Integration:
In this lesson, I will plan on using various forms of technology throughout. To introduce
the topic, I will begin with a PowerPoint with slides of the Earth. I will continue through the
PowerPoint as I introduce the continents and students use this slide for support as they complete
their model map. We will continue with the PowerPoint as I introduce interesting facts about
each continent and ocean. After students learn the information from the PowerPoint, I will use
technology to have students participate in a game of Jeopardy!
