Hello again! Mission, Vision and Values

Wow, it was such a pleasure to present the first issue of
The Enchanter to all of you. Thank you all for your compli-
ments and encouragement!

As I put this issue together and look at the news and pic-
tures which your Area Governors have sent me, I cannot
help smiling and I feel so proud to be in Division K. Look at
what you have all done! Whilst we keep moving forward,
let us be reminded of the Mission, Vision and Values of
Toastmasters International. What a grand organization we
belong to! I read Ralph Smedley’s words, “ Ours is the only
organization I know which is dedicated to the individual”

I quickly realized that being an Area Governor is like any
other Club role with the exception that it is a one year,
once in a lifetime, highly recommended, one-off man-
ual project, the detailed manual being commensurate
with the length and duration of a Toastmaster’s assign-
ment!
It began with my predecessor, the admirably slender,
Eleanor Pang ACG Grace Chiu, ACB, ALB meeting up with me in Sandakan

one fine Saturday morning in June 2009. Over a very
substantial breakfast, Grace passed me her notes and
advice on the expected duties. After happily putting on
at least 1 kilo around my waistline and taking off an
incalculable weight of anxiety off my mind, I willingly
undertook the role of AG. As Sandakan is my home-
town, I could kill two birds with one stone, so to speak.

Multi-tasking never seemed tastier, I thought, happily
replete, as I drove back to Tawau. A week later, I made
the acquaintance of the slim and dapper District Gover-
nor Hassan Sandukong ACG ALB and his charming,
svelte wife, Nurifrideri Bederi ACG ALB.
The next time I was to meet the lovely and slender
Grace was in KK, on the 11th July, attending the KK
TMC’s installation event. My brother in KK met me at
the airport and took me to breakfast (I already had one
in Tawau with hubby before leaving). But what’s an-
other breakfast to bond as siblings especially as he lent
me his car for my TM jaunts. That night at the Pacific
Sutera Ballroom I struggled to hold my waist in wishing
for A Transformation from KK Toastmasters’ truly magi-
cal evening. Hoping I could burn more calories after
doing justice to the delicious 8-course dinner, I heartily
cheered and clapped the richly deserved entertaining
performances. At the dinner table, I renewed an old
friendship with Annie Cheng DTM from her days as
Tawau Toastmaster, now Division Advisor. I struck up
new friendships with fellow area governors, all very
lovely and slim, Sylvia Maten ATMB, Chua Siew Yin ACS
CL and Ivy Fung ACB ALB. Also Leadership Chairman
Sandrasegaran and TLI Site & Hospitality Chair Lorna
Fisher.
Next day, 12th July saw me having breakfast before the
District 51 TLI Training. Then more bonding with various
club VPPR s under the training program. Got to know
other great people, appreciate invaluable help from
Richard Gontusan DTM, Ling How Kee CC CL and the
inimitable Datuk Hassan. Got to enjoy great motivating
speakers District Governor Ritchie Chong DTM,
Mohd.Ariff Azahari DTM, Mien Soenari DTM and then
to cement it all, yummy, curry lunch. Not to be out-
done, Datuk Hassan and Datin Nuri sponsored nyonya
cakes for tea after the Council meeting! Unforgettable.

Lynda Lee CC CL, accompanied me to stay with my
Mum & Dad as I motored down to Sandakan Yacht Club
on the 18th July as the installation officer for the Sanda-
kan Toastmasters Club, thus affording me the opportu-
nity to get to know the Club president, Amy Hiew CC CL.
Their theme was “Together We Explore the Possibili-
ties” and after a grand dinner, my waistline explored
the possibilities of further membership growth.
Again, TM friend Lynda Lee relaxed as passenger while I
drove to officiate Sandakan Pidato TM Club “Rainbow”
installation on the 27th July followed by another grand
dinner. Second waistline joined the club. Mum & Dad
were thankful Toastmasters brought me for another
filial visit and so a very hearty breakfast was served to
fortify us on our way. Lynda encouraged me to keep up
the line of chat to ward off the tyres going off road.

held their installation on
the 2nd August. Got to
meet the Club presidents and other exco members who
came for the night! Duty done, a good time was had by
all including the waistlines. After being wined and
dined, further membership growth was imminent.
22nd September2009 marked the first visit in my capac-
ity as Area K2 Governor to Tawau TMC. A memorable
dinner was served to celebrate the Raya festivities with
everyone also dressed up to reflect the event. Thank-
fully my loose baju kurung allowed me to indulge with-
out bated breath.
On 27th September I bombed down the Tawau-
Sandakan trail with two TMs! Lynda was joined by new
member Gorgonia Koh. Mum and Dad were pleased
with the new faces to their otherwise humdrum days.
The ensuing Area level Humorous and Evaluation
Speech Contests were a blast. New hope for waist re-
duction with Grace Yong’s winning “Pretty woman”.
Toastmasters can help in more ways than one!
The following month, 10th October saw me taking the
route by air to attend the KK Advanced TMC’s 6th instal-
lation. I was suitably impressed with the sleek, glamor-
ous and very enjoyable event contributing to my learn-
ing growth and the sumptuous dinner contributing to
my physical mid-growth of Unite and Progress. My
waistlines happily complied to their Club slogan for the
year.
11th October was the Division K Humorous Speech and
Evaluation Contests. The subject matter literally close

SABAH PORTS TOASTMASTERS

2nd March, 2010 was a red letter day for Division
K, Area K4, SWEPA TMC & Sabah Ports Toastmas-
ters Club (SPTMC). This day marked the official
charter or birth of SPTMC. The initiatives of
sponsors SWEPA TMC’S Vice President Public
Relations Rosie Moo & Vice President Education
Lai Fui Nar who are officers of Sabah Ports Sdn
Bhd paved the way for the new club to be char-
tered. The Managing Director of the Company
Datuk Dr Fowzi Haji Razi’s and the senior man-
agement’s belief in continuous learning for the
Company’s employees and their strong support
was also instrumental in the club’s formation.
The mentors of the new club are Area Governor
Ivy Fung ACS, ALB and SWEPA TMC President
Hanaa Wong Abdullah ACB, ALB. The Club Execu-
tive Committee has been elected to hold office
from March 2010 to June 2011.

lessness and benevolence. The Toast-
masters in Area K6 have been active in
developing the youth of Brunei through
the Toastmasters Youth Leadership Pro-
gram which in turn not only develops
the youth in communication and leader-
ship skills but also allows our Toastmas-
ters to practice their skills too through
the running of such a program.

In a bid to foster personal growth and
leadership skills, 33 students from the
Belait District recently took part in a five
-week Youth Leadership Programme.

Participants were students from the St Amy Lau Aik Mee, ACB, CL
Angela’s School, Chung Ching Middle Area K6 Governor
School and St Margaret’s School in Se-
ria. “We had an overwhelming response
from the school community and hope to
be able to run the programme again
next year,” added the coordinator.
Its materials were sponsored by the Ro-
tary Club of Belait, where members also
used an opportunity to offer career
talks to the students in areas of Petro-
leum Engineering, Mechanical Engineer-
ing, Geology and Chemical Engineering.
The club also presented cheques to the
principals of Chung Ching Middle
School, St Angela’ School, St John’s
School and Chung Hwa School, as part
of its Students Assistant Scheme (SAS)
dedicated to supporting underprivileged
students.

Participating students learnt the art of

public speaking and chairmanship that
would help them learn to communicate
effectively from grass root levels and
help instill self-confidence as well as
leadership qualities. To mark the com-
pletion of this successful programme, a
graduation ceremony was also held.

dents find their ‘voice’, the confidence

The HSBC Brunei Speakers Group has held YLP in various
schools through a collaborative effort with the bank's
Corporate Sustainability program. The first school for
the term was at Jerudong International School

enhance my public speaking skills (without the
help of this programme). I feel more confident
than ever now. I realized that I can actually talk

effort that HSBC has put into making this program
an educational, interactive and fun one".

It gives great satisfaction to the HSBC Coordina-

tors & fellow HSBC volunteers to see teachers and
parents in awe of the students' transformation
from being shy to becoming such confident, pas-
sionate individuals in such a short duration.

HSBC Speakers Group (HSG) under Toastmasters
International recently organised a Youth Leader-
ship Programme (YLP) for students from Pusat
Tingkatan Enam Meragang. The YLP is based on
the belief that every student has the potential to
become confident leaders and competent com-
municators. All they need is a safe and encourag-
ing environment to acquire, and practise this new
knowledge and skill.
HSBC's Manager Corporate Sustainability Mr. Lim
Boon Teck said, "The programme teaches stu-
dents to overcome the nervousness that is felt
with public speaking and also on how to organize
and present ideas in a logical and convincing man-
ner."
19 enthusiastic and more confident participants
recently received Certificates of Achievement
after completing 4 half day sessions of the Toast-
master's International Youth Leadership Pro-
beth Sim said "I am grateful and extremely happy
to be a part of the students learning process in
becoming the best that they can be. On behalf of
my team, I am proud to have been given this op-
portunity to make a difference in the lives of oth-
ers through the YLP. Life is about making choices
and the students made that choice to show up
and definitely made the programme even more
rewarding. The students turned it into a meaning-
ful, magical and memorable experience for every-
one especially for myself."
As a collaborative effort to give back to the com-
munity by the HSBC Speakers Group and the Cor-
porate Sustainability effort, the HSG has been
organizing Youth Leadership Programmes catered
to students since 2006.
Ms Ruey Chong-Narcis, President of the HSG said,
"This programme is focused on Brunei's youth
who are at the brink of going on for further stud-
ies, by strengthening the foundation blocks for
leadership, listening and communication skills
through 'learning by doing' as it serves to boost
their self confidence and facilitate their personal
growth. I would also like to thank the Brunei
Speaker's Club Vice President of Education, Kae-
wan Tan for supporting this event."

Division Toastmaster of the Year

Area K4 Toastmaster of the Year

The Area Toastmaster of the Year 2009-2010 is from Swepa Toastmasters Club, who
is Hanaa Wong Abdullah. She is very dedicated and well deserves the award. She is
very active in club meetings, inside and outside of STMC. She is mentoring Sabah
Ports Toastmasters Club as well as new members from Swepa Toastmasters Club. She
sponsored 7 new members, and she achieved her Advanced Communicator Bronze and
Advanced Leader Bronze awards this term. She is very active in Toastmasters activi-
ties on many levels, from club to division.
Many toastmasters may still remember when Hanaa competed in the Area Table Top-
ics Contest 3 years ago and she threw her arms out and shouted “TA TA! Action
speaks louder than words!”, she caught everyone’s attention indeed.
Hanaa is a cheerful person. She always has a smile on her face. No wonder she chose
“Smile and Inspire” as her presidential theme. Because of all this, Hanaa was nomi-
nated for and won the Division K Toastmaster of the Year 2009-2010 award. Bravo,
Hanaa! We are proud of you.

Our Division K Toastmaster for the term 2009-2010 is an outstanding Toastmaster.

This Toastmaster has shown outstanding dedication and commitment in the fields of
communication and leadership. This Toastmaster completed 2 educational awards,
brought in 7 new members, mentored new members, helped the club achieve Presi-
dent’s Distinguished Club status, helped the area achieve President’s Distinguished
Area status, mentored a new club, conducted speechcraft, visited other club meetings,
attended all the conventions at Division and District Levels, delivered speeches outside
the club to non Toastmasters audience, attended 100% club meetings, served in the
Division K Council, and is a President of a club.

Fellow Toastmasters, ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to announce that our Toast-
master of the Year 2009-2010 is ACB, ALB Hanaa Wong Abdullah, President of the

I was not alone in this bothersome
problem of waistlines. All, and I

hidden for so long and gave me the
courage to talk about here in my
journey 2009 - 2010. I also learnt
then that a black jacket would con-
tribute to a slimmer silhouette…
but my black jacket could only
emerge in leaner days when the
buttons would meet. I was told a
new jacket to fit the present state
of affairs would only become a
permanent part of the future ward-
