This week in science, weve been finishing up our plant projects and starting a new unit on the
Moon. Our plant projects have come out really nicely:

In our Sun, Moon, and Earth unit, weve been going over some vocabulary and learning about
why we have the seasons. Next week, were going to start learning about the Moons phases.

In math, we just finished learning about fractions and decimals. We talked about the place values
to the right of the decimal point, how to correctly say decimals, how to change fractions with the
denominators of ten and one hundred in to decimals, and how to compare and order decimals.
Next week, were going to start learning about measurement.

In reading, we read some stories about new technology, including A Telephone Mix-Up about
what happens in a town when they first start getting telephones, The Moon Over Star by Dianna
Hutts Aston about a family watching the first lunar landing, and 3...2...1 We Have Spin-Off!
about technology that was invented for the space program and found use in other areas of daily
life. While reading these stories, we thought about and discussed how technology affects our
lives. We also talked about historical fiction. Next week, were going to read books about the
objects in our sky and think about the question, How do you explain what you see in the sky?

This week in math, we continued learning about measurement. We talked about how to read
fractions of an inch on a ruler, and the kids got to practice using rulers to measure lines and
pictures. We also started talking about capacity and had a great discussion on Friday about what
objects in our classroom could hold more than one cup. Next week, well continue learning
about measurement and capacity as well as line plots, elapsed time, fractions, and problem
solving.

In language arts, we read some stories about some of the different things we see in the sky,
including the Moon, the Aurora Borealis, comets, and meteors. We also read some retellings of
some myths that explain some of the things that happen in the sky. Next week, were going to
focus a lot on preparing for the PSSAs, and were also going to read a few poems.
In science, we learned about the Moons phases and took our tests on the Earth, Sun, and Moon.
On Friday, we started working on research projects about the manned Apollo missions. The kids
will research their assigned mission with their partner to determine what was the most important
event or accomplishment of the mission and why. Then, theyll create a picture that represents
their mission and present their findings to the class.
