3. AIMS

Chemical Process Design

To develop a framework for the systematic analysis of flowsheet

information and specification of various chemical processes of varying
levels of complexity.
To present well thought and systematic approaches for manual and
computer-aided solution of balance problems for design purposes of
chemical reaction systems and processes.

4. OUTLINE SYLLABUS

Chemical Process Design

The main topics to be covered are : Formulating Balance Problems; Degree of

Freedom Analysis; Solution Strategy using D.O.F.; Single and Multiunit Configurations;
Non-Reacting and Reacting Systems; Sequencing with Complete and Partial Solutions;
Strategy for Machine Calculations.

5. LEARNING OUTCOMES

After having completed this module, students should be able to:

1. Understand and interpret written data on a process and generate and

define the various process streams
2. Fully determine if a process flowsheet is solvable and is correctly
specified

1
3. Generate all the required and relevant balances to define and present the
process
4. Use appropriate solution strategies to solve the process flowsheet and
determine all unknown flows of mass and energy
5. Understand fully the concept and use of the degree of freedom analysis in
solving process flowsheets of variable complexity.
