Unit Summary:

In this unit, students will explore Edgar Allan Poe's famous poem, The Raven. To start of the unit, students will be introduced to the History of
Edgar Allan Poe, in hopes to better understand who he is and why he wrote in a specific genre. Once the students understand everything there is
to know about Poe, the students will then start on reading, The Raven. Students will do multiple readings of the poem to find the different
meanings, the tone, and the overall message of the poem. Students will work on an activity that requires them to annotate a line and stanza, and
create a visual representation of a specific line or stanza. Additionally, students will work in groups or individually to focus on one or two stanzas
and work together to use their critical and analytical skills to define what each line or stanza means. Throughout the course of the unit, students
will have formative assessments that consists of: flash cards, quizzes, quick writes, and a group one-minute paper. Once the class has understood
the poem from top to bottom, at the end of the unit, the students will have a summative assessment that requires them to be tested on what they
have learned from the unit. Students will also be able to make their own interpretation of the poem that is based off Poe's theme in a form of a
short video or a presentation.
