Submission on or before 17/02/2017 (before 12:00 noon)

1. A MI voltmeter gives a sufficiently accurate maximum reading of 25 volts on dc. The resistance of
the working coil is 250 Ohm and its inductance is 0.1H. Determine the reading and error in
percentage when used to measure 25V 50Hz AC.

2. The inductance of a certain moving iron ammeter is (8+4 - ) H where is the deflection in

-6
radians from zero position. The control spring torque is 12X10 Nm per radian. Calculate the scale
position in radians for a current of 4A.
3. Determine the control constant for a PMMC instrument which shows a 30 deflection for a 100A
coil current. The coil dimensions are d=3cm and l=2.5cm, there are 300 turns, and the air gap flux
density is 300mT.
4. The mutual inductance between the fixed and moving coils of an electrodynamic instrument
changes linearly by 4H/degree when the instrument pointer deflects. if the spring control
constants is 5Nm/rad , determine the deflection when the coil currents are IF=2A and IM=15mA.
5. The current through the fixed coils of an electrodynamic instrument is held constant at I F =1A. The
spring control constant is 7Nm/rad, and the mutual inductance changes linearly by 400H/rad
when the instrument pointer deflects. Determine the moving coil current for a 90 deflection and
for a 45 deflection.
6. A 300mA heater current in a basic thermocouple instrument (as in fig.) produces an 8mV
thermocouple terminal; voltage and a 60A meter current. Determine the heater current when the
meter indicates 30A.

7. Two resistors R1 = 47K and R2=82K are connected in series across a 15V supply. A voltmeter on
a 10V range is connected to measure the voltage across R2. The voltmeter sensitivity is 10Kohm/V.
Calculate VR2 (a) with the voltmeter connected and (b) with voltmeter disconnected.
8. A PMMC instrument with a 900 coil resistance and an FSD of 75A is to be used with a half-wave
rectifier circuit as an ac voltmeter. Silicon diodes are used (VF=0.7V), and the minimum diode
forward current is to be 80A when the instrument indicates 0.25FSD. Calculate the shunt and
multiplier resistance values required to give 200V FSD.
9. The following data relate to a 1000/100 volts potential transformer:
Primary resistance = 94.5 ; Primary reactance = 66.2 ;secondary resistance = 0.86; total
equivalent reactance = 110. Magnetising current 0.02A at 0.4pf.Calculate:
(i) Phase angle error at no load;
(ii) Burden in VA at unity p.f. at which the phase angle will be zero.
10. The turns of primary and secondary windings of a current transformer are 1 and 200 respectively.
The secondary winding supplies a current of 5An to a non-inductive burden of 1 resistance. The
requisite flux is set up in the core by an mmf of 80AT. The frquency7 is 50Hz and the net cross-
section of the core is 1000mm2 .Neglecting the effects of magnetic leakage , iron losses and I2R
losses, calculate:
(i) The actual transformation ratio
(ii) Phase angle
(iii) Maximum flux density in the core.
11. A PMMC instrument uses a coil of resistance 0.2 ohm and produces full-scale deflection with a
steady current of 10A.If this instrument is used as an ammeter without the edition of any external
resistance then what will be the range of the instrument?
12. A basic D Arsonval movement with internal resistance 100 and full scale current 1mA is to be
converted into a multirange DC voltmeter with voltage range 0 10V, 0 30V,0 100V and 0
300V. The value of R1 will be?

13. When a voltage V0sin0t is applied to the pure inductor, the ammeter shown in the fig. reads I0. If
the voltage applied is - V0sin0t+ 2V0sin20t+ 3V0sin30t+ 4V0sin40t, the ammeter reading would
be..?

14. An AC current of 5Aand DC current of 5A flow simultaneously through a circuit. Which of the
following statement is true?
(A) An ac ammeter will read less than 10A but more than 5 A.
(B) An ac ammeter will read only 5A.
(C) A dc ammeter will read 10A
(D) A dc ammeter will read zero.
15. A moving coil ammeter has a fixed shunt of 0.02 resistance. If the coil resistance of the meter is
1000, a potential difference of 500mV is required across it for full-scale deflection. Under this
condition the current in the shunt would be.?
