A CASE STUDY OF
BRGY. PANTAY-QUITIQUIT, CAOAYAN, ILOCOS SUR

I. INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

A Barangay is the smallest administrative division in the Philippines and is the native Filipino
term for a village or district. Barangay are further subdivided into smaller areas called Puroks
(English: Zone). A barangay is led and governed by its barangay officials. It is composed of a
Punong Barangay or Barangay Captain/Chairman, seven (7) Barangay Councilors or Barangay
Kagawad and a Sangguniaang Kabataan Chairman. Together with this is the Barangay
Secretary and a residing midwife or a doctor that manages and supervise the barangay health
center.

Barangay Pantay-Quitiquit is one of the 17 barangays in Caoayan, a fourth-class


municipality in the Province of Ilocos Sur, Philippines. Pantay-Quitiquit have the lowest number
of household and population of the municipality, totalling to about 300 residents and 81
households according to a local census conducted in 2015.

II. OBJECTIVES

This study aims to identify the following:

1. Demographics of the Barangay


2. Educational Background of Residents
3. Religious Background of Residents
4. Average Income of Households
5. Occupation of Residents
6. Mortality Rate for the Past 3 Years

III. METHODOLOGY

POPULATION AND SAMPLE


Eighty-one (81) households were chosen as respondents. This represents 100% of
the households in the barangay as per data from the Brgy. Captain.

RESEARCH METHOD AND DESIGN


Survey questionnaires were provided to the respondents. After accomplishing the
questionnaire, the researcher collected the forms and prepared it for the
interpretation of the results.

Informal interviews were conducted to further validate the data given.

IV. FACTS

Pantay-Quitiquit is the smallest barangay in terms of population and number of


household in the municipality of Caoayan, Ilocos Sur.

The researchers conducted a survey from July 16-22, 2016, to obtain the information
needed for the study.

The researchers went house-to-house to distributing/accomplishing survey forms


and interviewing households.

The researchers managed to accomplish 100% of the total number of household in


the barangay.

V. FINDINGS

This part analyses the results of the data gathered from the of Brgy. Patay-Quitiquit,
Caoayan, Ilocos Sur.

households and total population of three-hundred five (305) residents of Pantay-Quitiquit,
Caoayan, Ilocos Sur.

Sex Distribution of Residents There are a total of 137 Male comprising about
44.91% and 168 or 55.09% Female residents of Pantay-Quitiquit, Caoayan, Ilocos Sur.

Age Distribution of Residents - The age distribution of residents of Pantay-Quitiquit


arranged from greatest to least number and percent distribution are as follows:

Most residents (69 or 22.62%) are Middle-Aged, this is followed by Adults at 65


residents or 21.31% of the total population. Next are School-Aged residents at 38 or 12.46%,
followed by Teenagers and Young Adults at 35 or 11.48% each. Further, 30 resident Senior
Citizens account for 9.84% of the population. The youngest age groups represents the least
number of residents with Pre-schoolers at 22 or 7.21%, Infants at 9 or 2.95% and Toddlers at 2
or 0.66% of the population.

Educational Attainment of Residents The educational attainment of residents are


further classified as follows: No Education (Disabled, Infants, Toddlers) 13 residents or 4.26%,
Pre-school (Day Care, Kinder) 13 residents or 4.26%, Elementary (Elem. Level, Elem. Grad.)
128 residents or 41.97%, High School (HS Level, HS Grad.) 77 residents or 25.24%, Vocational
21 residents or 6.89% and College (Col. Level, Col. Grad) 53 residents or 17.38%.

Many of the residents of Pantay-Quitiquit managed to attain basic elementary education.


Meanwhile, 25.24% of the residents have managed to attain secondary level education. Lastly,
17.38% attained college level education.

Religion Distribution of Residents An overwhelming majority of residents of Brgy.


Pantay-Quitiquit are Roman Catholics, they comprise of 301 residents or 98.69% of the total
population, in contrast, only 4 residents or 1.31% of the total population are Born Again
Christians.

Occupation Distribution of Residents Majority of the residents of Brgy. Pantay-


Quitiquit are not employed or are not yet eligible for employment, 179 residents or 58.68% of
the total population are either Students, Housekeepers, Unemployed, Underaged or Disabled.
The main occupation of residents are, Farmer, 60 residents or 10.49%, Laborer, 26 residents or
8.52%, Overseas-Filipino Worker, 13 residents or 4.26% of the population, Drivers and
Carpenters, both at 13 residents or 4.26% of the total population.

Monthly Income of Residents Out of the total population of 305 residents, there are
only a total of 127 residents or 41%, who have means of income. The Median Average Monthly
Income of Residents is about 5,600 pesos per month. In the majority of residents employed, 74
or 58.26%, have an income ranging from 2,500-5,000 pesos per month, or below the
subsistence level. Meanwhile, 44 residents or 34.65% of employed residents earn an income of
5,001-10,000 monthly and are barely capable of meeting basic food and non-food requirements
for a family of five. Lastly, 9 employed residents or 7.08% are better off, earning an income
range of 10,001-25,000+ per month.

Type of Employment of Residents Majority of residents are Unemployed or not yet


eligible for employment, this accounts for 181 residents or 59.34% of the total population.
Meanwhile, 78 residents or 25.57% are self-employed, while 29 residents or 9.51% are
employed to private individuals/companies. 13 residents or 4.26% of the population is employed
abroad and 4 residents or 1.31% is employed by the government.

Source of Income of Residents Most residents get their income from Salary. This
accounts for 53 residents or 44.54% of the total population. While, 33 residents or 27.73% get
their income from Farming and 14 or 11.76% get their income from the money Remittances sent
to from abroad. Other sources (Business, Pension, Etc.) account for 11 or 9.24%.

Average Monthly Income per Household The Median Average Income of the
households of Pantay-Quitiquit is about 8,700.00 pesos per month. Majority of the households
are living in subsistent poverty (1,000-6,500 pesos per month) or living on a minimum income
required to meet basic food needs. They comprise of 43 households or a total of 53.09%. While
15 households or 18.52% are living with an income of 6,501-9,500 per month, capable of
meeting the basic food and non-food requirement of a family with 5 members. 11 households or
13.58% are living with an income of 9,501-15,000 pesos per month and are earning above the
median average monthly income of all the households in the barangay. Further, 12 households
or 14.81% of total households have an income range or 15,001 pesos per month or above.

Household Appliances The top 4 appliances present in the majority of households


are: Electric Fan (96.30%), Television (91.36%), Radio (72.84%) and Refrigerator (50.62%).
Meanwhile, the next 4 appliances present in most households are: Rice Cooker (49.38%), Flat
Iron (44.44%), Washing Machine (23.46%) and PC/Laptop (16.05%), and lastly, the least
appliances present in households are: Oven (6.17%), Gas Range (4.94%), and Aircon (3.70%).

Incidence of Mortality for the Past 3 Years There are four (4) incidences of mortality
in Barangay Pantay-Quitiquit for the last three (3) years, half of which died due to
Cardiovascular Disease (Heart Attack, Stroke) and the other half (2) died of Pulmonary Disease
(Pneumonia). The average age of the residents who died is 72.75 years old.

VI. CONCLUSIONS
In summary, Brgy. Pantay-Quitiquit has a total of 81 households and a total of 305
residents. 168 of which, are females, while 137 are males.

Most of the residents are middle-aged and adults or with an age range of 26-59 years
old. Most of the residents have attained basic elementary education.

The overwhelming majority of residents are Roman Catholics and Farming is the
foremost source of income in the barangay.

Majority of residents are unemployed, this include students who are still studying,
disabled persons, housewives and under-aged children and some are self-employed
and earn their income through business.

The Median Average Monthly Income of Employed Residents is about 5,600 pesos
per month.

Majority of which only earns an income ranging from 2,500-5,000 pesos per month.
The majority of the households are living in subsistent poverty with an Average
Household Income ranging from 1,000-6,500 pesos per month. They are considered
as to be living on a minimum income barely sufficient to meet basic food needs.

Most employed residents get their income from the salary that they receive, while some
get their income through farming. The Median Average Income of Households of
Pantay-Quitiquit is about 8,700.00 pesos per month.

Most of the households have basic household appliances like Electric-fans, Televisions,
Radios and Refrigerators.

There were four incidence of mortality in the past three years, with an average age of
72.75 years old, mainly caused by Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Diseases.
