I first became interested in The Colored Museum during its
early stages, as playwright George C. Wolfe is a friend.
When I saw the play on opening night at The Public Theatre
. in New York, I had mixed emotions. Frankly, the production
led to many lengthy debates about the play's cultural
validity. It wasn't until I realized that I was still
passionately discussing a production I had seen months before
that I recognized its power.
The Colored Museum has been my 'lucky' play. I directed the
first college production at Brown University in 1987, which
went on to The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. as a
winner of the American College Theatre Festival. I am
hoping the luck will continue, inspite of the fact that opening
. night is Friday the 13th.
The Colored Museum speaks for itself. To make an attempt to
label or define this work is unnecessary; and although each
viewer will see something d ifferent, I am sure everyone will
find it thought-provoking.
