Chapter One

r-Ka-mhtmya-varana
Description of r-Ka's Glories

Text 1

o nryaa namasktya
nara caiva narottamam dev sarasvat vysa
tato jayam udrayet

om - Om; nryaam - the Personality of Godhead; namasktya - after


offering respectful obeisances; naram ca eva - and Nryaa i; narottamam -
the supermost human being; devm - the goddess; sarasvatm - the mistress of
learning; vysam - Vysadeva; tata - thereafter; jayam - all that is meant for
conquering; udrayet - be announced.

Before reciting this Garga-sahit, which is the very means of conquest, one
should offer respectful obeisances unto the Personality of Godhead, Nryaa,
unto Nara-Nryaa i, the supermost human being, unto mother Sarasvat,
the goddess of learning, and unto rla Vysadeva.*

Text 2

arad-vikaca-pakaja-riyam atva-vidveaka
milinda-muni-sevita kulia-kaja-cihnvtam sphurat-kanaka-npura dalita-
bhakta-tpa-traya
calad-dyuti-pada-dvaya hdi dadhmi rdh-pate

arat - autumn; vikaca - blooming; pakaja - lotus; sriyam - beauty; atva-


vidveakam - reviling; milinda - bees; muni - by sages; sevitam - served; kulia -
of lightning; kaja - lotus; cihna - with marks; vtam - covered; sphurat -
glistening; kanaka - golden; npuram - anklets; dalita - broken; bhakta - of the
devotees; tpa - sufferings; trayam - three; calat - moving; dyuti - splendor;
pada - of feet; dvayam - pair; hdi - in my heart; dadhmi - I place; rdh- pate
- of Rdh's Lord.

In my heart I place the splendid feet of Rdh's Lord, feet that eclipse the
glory of autumn lotuses, are served by hosts of bumblebee sages, are marked
with lightning and lotus and decorated with glistening golden anklets, and break
the three sufferings of the devotees.

vadana-kamala-niryadyasya pyam dya


pibati jana-varo 'ya ptu so 'ya gira me badara-vana-vihra satyavaty
kumra
praata-durita-hra srga-dhanv-avatra

vadana - face; kamala - lotus; niryadyasya - splendid; pyam - nectar;


dyam - transcendental; pibati - drink; jana- vara - the best of men; ayam - he;
ptu - may protect; sa ayam - he; giram - the words; me - of me; badara-vana -
in the forest Badarikrama; vihra - enjoys pastimes; satyavaty - of
Satyavat; kumra - the son; praata - of surrendered souls; durita - troubles;
hra - removing; srga-dhanu - of Lord Ka, who carries the rga bow;
avatra - an incarnation.

May Satyavat's son Vysa, who enjoys pastimes at Badariksrama, who is


the best of men, who drinks the transcendental nectar of the glory of Lord
Ka's lotus face, and who is an incarnation of the Lord who carries the rga
bow, protect my words.

Text 4

kadcin naimiraye
r-gargo jnin vara yayau aunaka drau
tejasv yoga-bhskara

kadcit - one time; naimiraye - in Naimiraya; r- garga - r Garga


Muni; jninm - of the wise; vara - the best; yayau - went; aunakam -
aunaka; draum - to see; tejasv - powerful; yoga - yoga; bhskara - a
splendid sun.

Once r Garga Muni, who was the best of the wise, very powerful, and a
brilliant sun of yoga, went to see aunaka Muni.

Text 5

ta dv sahasotthya
aunako munibhi saha pjaym sa padydyair
upacrair vidhnata

tam - him; dv - seeing; sahas - at once; utthya - rising; aunaka -


aunaka; munibhi saha - with the sages; pjaym sa - worshiped; padya-

dyai - beginning with water for washing the feet; upacrai - with many
offerings; vidhnata - according to religious tradition.

Seeing him, aunaka and the sages at once stood up and worshiped him by
washing his feet and presenting many offerings according to ancient tradition.

Text 6

r-aunaka uvca

sat paryaana dhanya


ghin ntaye smtam nm antas tamo-hr
sdhur eva na bhskara

r-aunaka uvca - r aunaka said; satm - of the saintly devotees;


paryaanam - wandering; dhanyam - good fortune; ghinm - of the
householders; ntaye - for peace; smtam - remembered; nm - of men;
anta - of the heart; tama - darkness; hr - removing; sdhu - a saintly
devotee; eva - certainly; na - not; bhskara - the sun.

r aunaka said: The auspicious travels of saintly devotees bring peace to


they who stay at home. It is a saintly devotee, and not the sun, the removes the
darkness in people's hearts.

Text 7

tasmn me hdi sambhta


sandeha naya prabho katidh r-harer vior
avatro bhavaty alam

tasmt - therefore; me - my; hdi - in the heart; sambhtam - born;


sandeham - doubt; naya - please destroy; prabha - O lord; katidh - how
many?; r-hare - who removes all that is inauspicious; of r Hari; vio - of
Viu; avatra - incarnations; bhavati - are; alam - many.

Therefore, O lord, please destroy the doubt in my heart. How often does Lord
Viu, who removes all that is inauspicious, descend to this world?

Text 8

r-garga uvca

sdhu pa tvay brahman


bhagavad-gua-varanam vat gadat yad vai
pcchat vitanoti am

r-garga uvca - r Garga Muni said; sdhu - well; pam - asked; tvay
- by you; brahman - O brhmaa; bhagavat - of the Lord; gua - the qualities;

varanam - the description; vatm - of they who hear; gadatm - of they who
speak; yat - which; vai - indeed; pcchatm - of they who ask; vitanoti - gives;
am - auspiciousness.

r Garga Muni said: O brhmaa, you have asked a worthy question. The
description of the Lord's transcendental qualities brings auspiciousness to they
who hear, speak, and ask.

Text 9

atraivodharantmam
itihsa purtanam yasya ravaa-mtrea
mah-doa praamyati

atra - here; eva - indeed; udharanti - they speak; imam - this; itihsam -
history; purtanam - ancient; yasya - of whom; ravaa - hearing; mtrea - by
merely; mah - great; doa - fault; praamyati - is pacified.

Of this they tell the story of an event in ancient history, simply by hearing of
which great sin is removed.

mithil-ngare prva
bahulva pratpavn r-ka-bhakta nttm
babhva nirahakti

mithil-ngare - in Mithil City; prvam - in ancient times; bahulva -


Bahulva; pratpavn - powerful; r- ka - of Lord Ka; bhakta - a
devotee; nta - peaceful; tm - at heart; babhva - was; nirahakti - free
from false ego.

In the city of Mithil in ancient times lived a powerful king named Bahulva,
who was peaceful at heart, free of false ego, and a great devotee of Lord Ka.

ambard gatam dv
nrada muni-sattamam sampjya csane sthpya
ktjalir abhata

ambart - from the sky; gatam - come; dv - seeing; nradam - Nrada;


muni-sattamam - the best of sages; sampjya - worshiping; ca - and; sane - a
seat; sthpya - giving; ktjali - with folded hands; abhata - spoke.

Seeing the best of sages Nrada decend from the sky, (the king) worshiped
him, offered him a seat, and with folded hands addressed him.

r-bahulva uvca

yo 'ndir tm puruo
bhagavn prakte para kasmt tanu samdhatta
tan me brhi mah-mate

r-bahulva uvca - r Bahulva said; ya - who; andi -


beginningless; tm - self; purua - person; bhagavn - the Lord; prakte -
matter; para - above; kasmt - why?; tanum - a form; samdhatta - accepted;
tat - that; me - to me; brhi - please tell; mah-mate - O wise one.

r Bahulva said: O wise one, please tell me why the beginningless


Supreme Person, who is beyond the material energy, places His transcendental
form in this world?

Text 13

r-nrada uvca

go-sdhu-devat-vipra-
vedn rakaya vai tanu dhatte hari skd
bhagavn tma-llay

r-nrada uvca - r Nrada said; ga - of the cows; sdhu - devotees;


devat - demigods; vipra - brhmaas; vednm - and Vedas; rakaya - for
protection; vai - indeed; tanum - form; dhatte - placed; hari - Lord Ka;
skt - directly; bhagavn - the Supreme Personality of Godhead; tma - own;
llay - by pastimes.

To protect the cows, devotees, demigods, and Vedas, Lord Hari, the original
Supreme Personality of Godhead, placed His own transcendental form and
pastimes in this world.

Text 14

yath naa sva-lly


mohito na paras tath anye dv ca tan-my
mumuhus te muhur muhu

yath - as; naa - an actor; sva-llym - by His won pastimes; mohita -


bewildered; na - not; para - another; tath - so; anye - others; dv - seeing;
ca - also; tat - His; mym - illusory potency; mumuhu - become bewildered; te
- they; muhumuhu - again and again.

As a magician is not bewildered by His own magic tricks, although others may
be bewildered, so the Supreme Personality of Godhead is not bewildered by the

magic tricks He does with His illusory potency, although others who see them
are bewildered again and again.

ri-bahulva uvca

katidh r-harer vior


avatro bhavaty alam sdhn rakartha hi
kpay vad m prabho

ri-bahulva uvca - r Bahulva said; katidh - how many times; r-


hare - of Lord Hari; vio - of Lord Viu; avatra - incarnation; bhavati - is;
alam - greatly; sdhnm - of the devotees; rakaa - protection; artham - for
the purpose; hi - indeed; kpay - by the mercy; vada - please tell; mm - me;
prabha - O lord.

r Bahulva said: How often does Lord Viu, who removes all that is
inauspicious, descend to this world to protect the devotees? O lord, please kindly
tell me.

Text 16

r-nrada uvca

ao 'as tathvea
kal pra prakathyate vysdyai ca sma aha
paripratama svayam

r-nrada uvca - r Nrada said; aa - of a part; aa - of a part; aa


- a part; tath - then; vea - entrance; kal - a part; pra - full; prakathyate
- is said; vysa-dyai - by they who have Vysa as their leader; ca - also;
sma - remembered; aha - six; paripratama - most full; svayam -
personally.

r Nrada said: In the Smti-stra the great sages who have Vysa as their
leader explain that the Lord descends in six kinds of forms: 1. aa (a part of
a part), 2. aa (a part), 3. vea (entrance into a jva), 4. kal (a full part), 5.
pra (full), and 6. paripratama (most full).

Text 17

aas tu marcy-dir
a brahmdayas tath kal kapila-krmdy
ve bhrgavdaya

aa - aa; tu - indeed; marci - with Marci; di - beginning; a


- a; brahma - with Brahm; daya - beginning; tath - so; kal - kal;

kapila - with Kapila; krma - and Krma; dy - beginning; ve - avea;
bhrgava - with Paraurma; daya - beginning.

The aa incarnations begin with Marci, the a incarnations begin with


Brahm, the kal incarnations begin with Kapila and Krm, and the vea
incarnations begin with Paraurma.

Text 18

pro nsiho rma ca


vetadvpdhipo hari vaikuho 'pi tath yajo
nara-nryaa smta

pra - full; nsiha - Nsiha; rma - Rma; ca - and; vetadvpdhipa


- the ruler of vetadvpa; hari - Hari; vaikuha - Vaikuha; api - also; tath -
then; yaja - Yaja; nara-nryaa - Nara-Nryaa; smta - decsribed in the
Smti.

The Smti-stra explains that the pra incarnations are 1. Nsiha, 2.


Rma, 3. Lord Hari, the ruler of vetadvpa, 4. Vaikuha, 5. Yaja, and 6. Nara-
Nryaa.

Text 19

paripratama skc
chr-ko bhagavn svayam asakhya-brahma-patir
goloke dhmni rjate

paripratama - paripratama; skt - directly; r-ka - r Ka;


bhagavn - the Lord; svayam - personally; asakhya - numberless; brahma -
of universes; pati - the ruler; goloke dhmni - in the abode of Goloka; rjate - is
splendidly manifested.

The paripratama form of the Lord is r Ka, who is the original Supreme
Personality of Godhead Himself. He is the master of countless universes. He is
splendidly manifest in the realm of Goloka.

Text 20

krydhikra kurvanta
sad-a te prakirtit tat-krya-bhra kurvantas
te ' vidit prabho

krya - of work; adhikram - overseeing; kurvanta - dooing; sat - of the Lord;


a - aa incarnations; te - they; prakirtit - described; tat - of that; krya -
work; bhram - the burden; kurvanta - doing; te - they; a - the aa
incarnations; vidit - known; prabho - of the Lord.

The aa incarnations are said to oversee the execution of the Lord's mission
(in the world). The aa incarnations are understood to perform the work of
executing those missions.

Text 21

yem antar-gato viu


krya ktv vinirgata nnvevatr ca
viddhi rjan mah-mate

yem - of whom; anta - within; gata - gone; viu - Lord Viu; kryam -
mission; ktv - having done; vinirgata - departs; nn - various; vea-
avatrn - vea incarnations; ca - also; viddhi - please know; rjan - O king;
mah-mate - great heart.

O great soul, O king, please know that in the various vea incarnations Lord
Viu enters (a jva), executes His mission, and then departs.

Text 22

dharma vijya ktv ya


punar antaradhyata yuge yuge vartamna
so 'vatra kal hare

dharmam - religious principles; vijya - teaching; ktv - having done; ya -


who; puna - again; antaradhyata - disappears; yuge yuge - millenium after
millenium; vartamna - being so; sa - He; avatra - incarnation; kal - kal;
hare - of Lord Hari.

Millennium after millennium Lord Hari's kal incarnations teach and establish
the principles of religion, and then disappear.

Text 23

catur-vyho bhaved yatra


dyante ca ras nava ata para ca vryi
sa tu pra prakathyate

catur-vyha - the catur-vyha incarnations; bhavet - are; yatra - where;


dyante - are seen; ca - also; ras - mellows; nava - nine; ata - then; param -
after; ca - also; vryi - prowess; sa - He; tu - indeed; pra - pra;
prakathyate - is said.

The pra incarnations are said to include the catur-vyha incarnations. They
are said to be the places where heroic powers and the nine rasas are seen.

yasmin sarvi tejsi
vilyante sva-tejasi ta vadanti pare skt
paripratama svayam

yasmin - in which; sarvi - all; tejsi - glories; vilyante - enter; sva-tejasi -


in His own glory; tam - Him; vadanti - say; pare - others; skt - directly;
paripratamam - Paripratama; svayam - personally.

Others say that the form of the Lord where all powers and glories enter is His
paripratama form, the original form of the Lord Himself.

Text 25

prasya lakaa yatra


ta payanti pthak pthak bhvenpi jan so 'ya
paripratama svayam

prasya - of the pta incarnation; lakaam - characteristic; yatra - where;


tam - that; payanti - see; pthak pthak - specifically; bhvena - by nature; api
- also; jan - people; sa ayam - He; paripratama - Paripratama; svayam -
personally.

The transcendental qualities people see distributed among the Lord's pra
incarnations are all present in the Lord's original, paripratama form.

Text 26

paripratama skc
chr-ko nnya eva hi eka-kryrtham gatya
koi-krya cakra ha

paripratama - paripratama; skt - directly; r-ka - r Ka;


na - not; anya - another; eva - certainly; hi - indeed; eka - one; krya - mission;
artham - for the purpose; gatya - coming; koi - millions; kryam - mission;
cakra - did; ha - indeed.

The Lord's original, paripratama form is r Ka and no one else. Coming


(to this world) to execute one mission, He executes millions of missions.

Text 27

pra pura puruottamottama


part paro ya purua parevara svaya sadnandamaya kpkara
gukara ta araa vrajmy aham

pra - perfect; pura - ancient; purua - of persons; uttama - of the best;


uttama - the best; part - than the greatest; para - greater; ya - who;
purua - the Supreme Person; para - of the exalted; vara - the master;

svayam - personally; sat- nandamayam - full of transcendental bliss; kp - of
mercy; karam - mine; gua - of transcendental virtues; karam - a mine; tam -
of Him; araam vrajmi aham - I take shelter.

He is perfect and complete. He is the oldest. He is the most exalted of exalted


persons. He is greater than the greatest. He is the Supreme Person. He is the
master of the exalted. Of He who is full of bliss, who is jewel-mine of mercy, who
is a jewel-mine of transcendental virtues, I take shelter.

romc prema-vihvala pramya netre 'ru-pre
nrada vkyam abravt

r-garga uvca - r Garga said; tat rutv - hearing; harita - delighted;


rj - the king; romc - his bodily hairs erect; prema - with love; vihvala -
overcome; pramya - wiping; netre - his eyes; aru - with tears; pre - filled;
nradam - to Nrada; vkyam - a statement; abravt - said.

r Garga said: Hearing this, the king became very happy. Overcome with
love and the hairs of his body erect in ecstasy, he wiped his tear-filled eyes and
spoke to Nrada.

r-bahulva uvca

paripratamah skc
chr-ko kena hetun gato bhrate khae
dvravaty virjate

r-bahulva uvca - r Bahulva said; paripratama - paripratama;


skt - directly; r- ka - r Ka; kena - by what?; hetun - reason;
gata - came; bhrate khae - to theland of Bhrata; dvravatym - in
Dvrak; virjate - is splendidly manifested.

r Bahulva said: Why did r Ka, the original, paripratama form of


the Lord, come to the land of Bhrata and gloriously appear in Dvrak?

tasya goloka-nthasya
goloka dhma sundaram karmy aparimeyni
brhi brahman bhan-mune

tasya - of Him; goloka-nthasya - the master of Goloka; goloka dhma - the
realm of Goloka; sundaram - beautiful; karmi - activities; aparimeyni -
countless; brhi - please tell; brahman - O brhmaa; bhat - great; mune - O
sage.

O brhmaa, O great sage, please describe the countless deeds and beautiful
Goloka realm of He who is the master of Goloka.

Text 31

yad trthana kurvan


chata-janma-tapa-para tad sat-sagam etyu
r-ka prpnuyn nara

yad - when; trtha - to holy places; anam - journey; kurvan - doing; ata -
100; janma - births; tapa - austerities; para - intent; tad - then; sat - of
devotees; sagam - the association; etya - attaining; u - quickly; r-kam -
r Ka; prpnuyt - may attain; nara - a human being.

When a human being visits many holy places and devotedly performs a
hundred years of austerities, he will attain the association of the devotees. Then
he will attain r Ka Himself.

Text 32

r-ka-dsasya ca dsa-dsa
kad bhaveya manasrdra-citta yo durlabho deva-varai partm
sa me katha gocara di-deva

r-ka - of r Ka; dsasya - of the servant; ca - and; dsa - of the


servant; dsa - the servant; kad - when?; bhaveyam - will I become; manasa -
with thoughts; ardra - melting; citta - his heart; ya - a person who; durlabha -
rare; deva- varai - by the best of demigods; partm - the Supreme Person; sa
- He; me - of me; katham - whether?; gocare - in the range of perception; di -
the original; deva - Lord.

When, my heart melting with love, will I think "I am the servant of the
servants of r Ka's servants?" Will the Supreme Personality of Godhead,
whom even the greatest demigods cannot attain, appear before me?

dhanyas tva rja-rdla


r-keo hari-priya tubhya ca darana dtu
bhakteo 'trgamiyati

dhanya - fortunate; tvam - you; rja - of kings; rdla - O tiger; r-ka -


r Ka; ia - honored; hari - to Lord Hari; priya - dear; tubhyam - to you;

ca - also; daranam - sight; dtum - to give; bhakta - of the devotees; a - the
Lord; atra - here; gamiyati - will come.

O tiger of kings, you are fortunate. r Ka honors you. Lord Hari loves
you. The Lord of the devotees will come to reveal Himself to you.

tva npa rutadeva ca


dvija-devo janrdana smaraty ala dvrakym
aho bhgya satm iha

tvam - you; npam - king; rutadevam - rutadeva; ca - also; dvija - of the


brhmaas; deva - the Lord; janrdana - Ka; smarati - remembers; alam -
greatly; dvrakym - in Dvrak; aha - oh; bhgyam - the good fortune; satm
- of the devotees; iha - here.

Lord Janrdana, the master of the brhmaas remembers both rutadeva and
you, the king. Ah, the good fortune of the devotees here in Dvrak!
