See inside back cover of Hibbelers for centroid of common geometries.

3. For a composite body

A composite body consists of a series of simple bodies such as rectangles,

triangles, circles, semicircles, etc.

To find the center of gravity/center of mass/centroid of a composite body:

Divide the composite body into simpler parts

Find center of gravity/center of mass/centroid for each part

Summation to find center of gravity/center of mass/centroid of the

composite body

If the composite body has a hole, the corresponding

volume/area/length is considered to be negative.

Example: (Hibbeler Statics 9.9)

Locate the centroid of the wire shown.

Part x (mm) y (mm) z (mm) L (mm)
Example: (Hibbeler Statics 9.10)

Locate the centroid of the plate area shown.

Part x (m) y (m) A (m2)
