Subject: Project Management

[1] A project comprises the following activities.
Activity A B C D E F G
Immediate predecessors - - A A,B C,D D E,F
Activity time (days) 12 6 13 12 11 13 11
a) Construct a Gantt chart which will provide an overview of the planned project.
b) How soon could the project be completed?
c) Which activities need to be completed on time in order to ensure that the project
is completed as soon as possible?

[2] A project has the following activity details.

Activity A B C D E F G
Immediate predecessors - - - C B A E,F
Activity time (weeks) 3 4 3 12 5 7 3
Draw a Gantt chart to represent the project; determine those activities comprising
the critical path; and estimate the project duration.

[3] A hydraulic systems component company is planning to install a new flexible

manufacturing system. The various activities that must be performed together with
their immediate predecessors, and estimated activity times are shown below:
Activity Description Immediate Estimated Activity Time (days)
Predecessors
A Analyze current performance - 3
B Identify goals A 1
C Survey existing operation A 7
D Define new system capabilities B 6
E Study existing technologies - 2
F Determine specifications D 9
G Conduct equipment analyses C, F 13
H Identify implementation activities C 3
I Determine organizational impacts H 4
J Prepare report E, G, I 2
K Establish audit procedure H 2
a) Construct a CPM network for the project.
b) Identify those activities comprising the critical path.
c) What is the project's estimated duration?
d) Construct a table showing for each activity, its activity duration, earliest start
time, latest start time, earliest finish time, latest finish time, and the activity slack.

Dr. Sayed Ali Zayan 1

[4] A project consists of eleven separate activities labeled A to K, in the table below
the interrelationships between activities and the estimated activity durations are given
Activity A B C D E F G H I J K
Imm. Prec. - A A A B C C,D E,F G H,I J
Duration(weeks) 4 6 10 8 18 7 24 8 2 10 4
Draw the network diagram, calculate the total float, free float, and independent float of
all activities and hence find the critical path. Construct Gantt chart.

[5] The following tasks are to be completed on vehicles at a service station:

Tasks Preceding tasks Times (Sec.)
A Driver arrives and stops - 20
B Driver selects brands of oil & petrol A 10
C Fill petrol tank B 100
D Prepare bill C, L 50
E Receive payment D 50
F wash wind screen A 20
G Polish wind screen F 20
H Check tire pressure A 100
J Inflate tire H 90
K Open bonnet A 20
L check oil requirement K 80
M Fill oil B, L 20
N Add distilled water to battery K 30
P Fill radiator K 30
Q Close bonnet M, N, P 10
R Driver departs from forecourt E, G, J, Q 20
a) Draw the network and find the total, free, and independent float for each
activity.
b) Construct Gantt chart for the project.

[6] A project has been defined to contain the following list of activities, along with
their required times for completion.
Activity A B C D E F G H I
Imm. Prec. - A A A B C,D E,F D G,H
Time(days) 1 4 3 7 6 2 7 9 4
a) Draw the project network
b) Show the critical path
c) What would happen if activity F was revised to take four days instead of
two?

[7] A project schedule has the following characteristics:

Act. 1-2 2-3 2-4 3-5 4-5 4-6 5-7 6-7 7-8 7-9 8-10 9-10
to 1 1 1 3 2 3 4 6 2 4 1 3
tm 2 2 3 4 3 5 5 7 4 6 2 5
tp 3 3 5 5 4 7 6 8 6 8 3 7

a) Construct the project network
b) Find the critical path and expected duration
c) What is the probability of completing the project in 30 days.

[8] A project has the following activity details

Act. A B C D E F G H I J K L
Im.Pre - A A B C C E F G,H G,H I J
to 1 2 2 6 4 6 8 12 4 10 2 6

a) Construct a PERT network from the following information and determine the
critical path.
b) Assuming that the schedule allows 40 days to complete the whole project,
calculate the probability of completion by the scheduled date.
c) The contractor wants a scheduled completion date that will give him 98%
chance of attaining, how many days should be allowed in his schedule?
