Description of Questions About the Lord's Appearance

rdm subala sakh stoka-ko 'rjuno 'u ca
nava-nanda-ghe vidhe

r-bhagavn uvca - the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; nanda - of


Nanda; upananda - and Upananda; bhavane - in the home; rdm - rdm;
subala - Subala; sakh - friends; stoka-ka - Stoka-ka; arjuna - Arjuna;
aa - partial expansions; ca - also; nava - new; nanda - of Nanda; ghe - in the
home; vidhe - O Brahm.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: My friends rdm and Subala


will take birth in the homes of Nanda and Upananda. Stoka-ka, Arjuna, and
Au will take birth in the nine homes of Nanda's relatives.

vilaabha-tejasvi-
devaprastha-varthap bhaviyanti sakhyo me
vraje sad vabhnuu

vilaabha-tejasvi - Vila, abha, and Tejasv; devaprastha-varthap -


Devaprastha and Varthapa; bhaviyanti - will be; sakhya - friends; me - My;
vraje - in Vraja; a - six; vabhnuu - in the homes of the relatives of King
Vabhnu.

My friends Vila, abha, Tejasv, Devaprastha, and Varthapa will take


birth among the six relatives of King Vabhnu.

r-brahm uvca - r Brahm said; kasya - of whom?; vai - indeed; nanda -


of Nanda; padav - path; kasya - of whom?; vai - indeed; vabhnut - of King
Vabhnu; vada - tell; deva - of the demigods; pate - O lord; skt - directly;
upanandasya - of Upananda; lakaam - the characteristics.

r Brahm said: Who is Nanda? Who is Vabhnu? O master of the


demigods, please describe the nature of Upananda.

g playanti ghoeu
sad go-vttayo 'niam te gopl may prokts
te tva lakaa u

r-bhagavn uvca - the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; g - cows;


playanti - protect; ghoeu - in the homes of the cowherds; sad - always; ga
- for the cows; vttaya - activities; aniam - day and night; te - they; gopl -
protectors of the cows; may - by Me; prokt - said; tem - of them; tvam -
you; lakaam - characteristics; u - please hear.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: They are cowherd people. Day and
night they protect the cows in the villages of cowherds. Listen and I will describe
them.

nanda prokta sa-goplair


nava-laka-gav pati upananda ca kathita
paca-laka-gav pati

nanda - Nanda; prokta - said; sa-goplai - with the gopas; nava-laka -


900,000; gavm - of cows; pati - the master; upananda - Upananda; ca - also;
kathita - said; paca- laka - 500,000; gavm - of cows; pati - the master.

The gopas say that Nanda is the master of 900,000 cows and Upananda is
the master of 500,000 cows.

vabhnu sa ukto yo
daa-laka-gav pati gav koir ghe yasya
nanda-rja sa eva hi

vabhnu - Vabhnu; sa - he; ukta - said; ya - who; daa- laka - one


million; gavm - of cows; pati - the master; gavm - of cows; koi - ten
million; ghe - in the home; yasya - of whom; nanda- rja - King Nanda; sa - he;
eva - certainly; hi - indeed.

They say that Vabhnu is the master of a million cows and at King Nanda's
home are ten million cows.

koy-ardha ca gav yasya


vabhnu-varas tu sa etdau vraje dvau tu
sucandro droa eva hi

koi-ardham - five million; ca - and; gavm - of cows; yasya - of whom;


vabhnu-vara - Vabhnu; tu - indeed; sa - he; etdau - like this; vraje -
in Vraja; dvau - two; tu - indeed; sucandra - Sucandra; droa - Droa; eva -
indeed; hi - certainly.

Vabhnuvara has five million cows, and Sucandra and Droa in Vraja each
have that number.

sarva-lakaa-lakyhyau
gopa-rjau bhaviyata ata-candrnann ca
sundar su-vsasm gopn mad-vraje ramye
ata-ytho bhaviyati

sarva-lakaa-lakya-ahyau - opulent with all virtues; gopa-rjau - two gopa


kings; bhaviyata - will be; ata - hundred; candra - moons; nannm - whose
faces; ca - also; sundarm - of beautiful girls; su-vsasm - beautifully
dressed; gopnm - gops; mat - My; vraje - in Vraja; ramye - beautiful; ata -
hundreds; ytha - groups; bhaviyati - will be.

These two gopa kings will be rich with all virtues. In My Vraja will also be
hundreds of groups of beautiful, beautifully dressed gops, their faces like
hundreds of moons.

jagat-kraa-kraa ythasya lakaa sarva
tan me brhi parevara

r-brahm uvca - r Brahm said; he - O; dna - of the poor; bandha -


friend; he - O; deva - Lord; jagat - of the universes; kraa - of the causes;
kraa - the cause; ythasya - of the groups; lakaam - characteristic; sarva -
all; tat - that; me - to me; brhi - please speak; para-vara - O Supreme Lord.

r Brahm said: O friend of the poor, O Lord, O cause of the universes'


causes, O Supreme Personality of Godhead, please completely describe these
groups (of gops).

arbuda daa-kon
munibhi kathita vidhe darbuda yatra bhavet
so 'pi ytha prakathyate

r-bhagavn uvca - the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; arbudam - a


hundred million; daa - ten; kon - ten million; munibhi - by sages; kathitam
- said; vidhe - O Brahm; daa - ten; arbudam - a hundred million; yatra - where;
bhavet - may be; sa - that; api - also; ytha - group; prakathyate - is said.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: O Brahm, the sages say that the
number one hundred million is called one arbuda. In each group there are ten
arbudas (one million).

goloka-vsinya kcit
kcid vai dvra-plik gra-prakar kcit
kcit kcic chayyopakrak

goloka - of Goloka; vsinya - the residents; kacit - some; kcit - some; vai -
indeed; dvra-plik - doorkeepers; gra-prakar - decorators; kcit -
some; kcit - some; kcit - some; ayy-upakrak - arranging the bed.

Some of the gops who live in Gokula are doorkeepers, some decorate (the
divine couple), and some prepare the (divine couple's) bed.

chr-vndvana-plik govardhana-nivsinya
kcit kuja-vidhyik

prad - associates; khy - named; tath - so; kcit - some; r-
vndvana - of Vndvana; plik - the protectors; govardhana - by
Govardhana Hill; nivsinya - residing; kcit - some; kuja - in the forest groves;
vidhyik - arranging.

Some of these gop associates of the Lord protect the forest of Vndvana,
some reside by Govardhana Hill, and some decorate the forest groves.

me nikuja-nivsinyo
bhaviyanti vraje mama eva ca yamun-ytho
jhnav-ytha eva ca

me - of Me; nikuja - in the forest groves; nivsinya - residing; bhaviyanti -


will be; vraje - in Vraja; mama - My; evam - thus; ca - also; yamun - of the
Yamun; ytha - the group; jhnav - of the Ganges; ytha - the group; eva -
certainly; ca - also.

Some will reside in the forests of My Vraja. Some will reside by the Yamun
and some by the Ganges.

ramy madhu-mdhavy
virajys tathaiva ca lality vikhy
my-ytho bhaviyati

ramy - of Ram; madhu-mdhavy - of Madhu-Mdhav; virajy - of


Viraj; tath - so; eva - indeed; ca - and; lality - of Lalit; vikhy - of
Vikh; my-ytha - group; bhaviyati - will be.

Ram, Madhu-Mdhav, Viraj, Lalit, and Vikh will each lead a group.

eta hy aa-sakhn ca
sakhn kila oaa dvatriac ca sakhn tu
yth bhvy vraje vidhe

et - they; hi - indeed; aa - eight; sakhn - of friends; ca - also;


sakhnm - of friends; kila - certainly; oaa - sixteen; dvatriat - 32; ca -
and; sakhnm - of friends; tu - indeed; yth - groups; bhvy - will be; vraje
- in Vraja; vidhe - O Brahm.

O Brahma, in Vraja there will be groups led by eight gop friends, by sixteen
gop friends, and by thirty-two gop friends.

ruti-rp i-rp
maithil kauals tath ayodhy-pura-vsinyo
yaja-st pulindak

ruti - of the Vedas; rp - forms; i - of the sages; rp - forms; maithil


- of the women of Mithil; kaual - the people of Koal; tath - so; ayodhy-
pura-vsinya - the women of Ayodhy; yaja-st - the Yaja Sts; pulindak
- the Pulind girls.

Some of the gops to be had been Personified Vedas, some great sages,
some women in Mithil, some women in Koal, some women in Ayodhy, some
yaj-sts, and some Pulind girls.

ys may varo datto


prve prve yuge yuge ts yth bhaviyanti
gopn mad-vraje ubhe

ysm - to whom; may - by Me; vara - benediction; datta - given; prve -


before; prve - before; yuge yuge - in different yugas; tsm - of them; yth -
groups; bhaviyanti - will be; gopnm - of gops; mat - My; vraje - in Vraja;
ubhe - beautiful.

In previous millennia having received a benediction from Me, they will


become various groups of gops in My beautiful Vraja.

et katha vraje bhvy


kena pyena kair varai durlabha hi pada tad vai
yogibhi puruottama

r-brahm uvca - r Brahm said; et - they; katham - how; vraje - in


Vraja; bhvy - will be; kena - by what?; pyena - pious deed; kai - by what?;
varai - benedictions; durlabham - difficult to attain; hi - indeed; padam - state;
tat - that; vai - certainly; yogibhi - by yogs; puruottama - O Supreme
Personality of Godhead.

r Brahm said: How will they become (gops) in Vraja? O Supreme
Personality of Godhead, because of what pious deed or what benedictions will
they attain this position even the great yogs cannot attain?

vetadvpe ca bhmna
rutayas tuuvu param uatbhir girbhi ca
prasanno 'bht sahasra-pt

r-bhagavn uvca - the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; vetadvpe -


in vetadvpa; ca - also; bhmnam - the Lord; rutaya - the personified Vedas;
tuuvu - offered prayers; param - greatly; uatbhi - beautiful; girbhi -
with words; ca - also; prasanna - pleased; abht - became; sahasra-pt - the
universal form, who has a thousand feet.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: When in vetadvpa the


personififed Vedas offered prayers to Him with eloquent words, the Lord's form
who has thousands of feet became pleased.

vara vta yya vai


yan mano-vchita mahat ye prasanno 'ha skt
te ki durlabha bhuvi

r-hari uvca - r Hari said; varam - a benediction; vta - choose;


yyam - you; vai - certainly; yat - what; mana - by the heart; vchitam - is
desired; mahat - great; yem - by whom; prasanna - pleased; aham - I am;
skt - directly; tem - of them; kim - what?; durlabham - difficult to attain;
bhuvi - on the earth.

r Hari said: Choose a benediction, whatever your heart desires. What is


difficult to attain for they with whom I am pleased?

r-rutaya cu

v-mano-gocartta
tato na jyate tu tat nanda-mtram iti yad
vandantha pura-vida tad rpa daraysmka
yadi deyo varo hi na

r-rutaya cu - the personified Vedas said; vk - words; mana - and
mind; gocara - the range; attam - beyond; tata - therefore; na - not; jyate -
known; tu - indeed; tat - that; nanda - bliss; mtram - only; iti - thus; yat - what;
vandanti - they say; iha - here; pura-vida - the cholars of the Puras; tat - that;
rpam - form; daraya - please show; asmkam - to us; yadi - if; deya - to be
given; vara - a benediction; hi - indeed; na - to us.

The personified Vedas said: Because You are beyond the material mind and
material words, we cannot perfectly understand You. If You wish to give us a
benediction, then please directly show us Your transcendental form, which the
scholars of the Puras say is full of bliss.

rutvaitad daraym sa
sva loka prakte param kevalnubhavnanda-
mtram akaram avyayam

r-bhagavn uvca - the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; rutv -


having heard; etat - this; daraym sa - He showed; svam - His own; lokam -
realm; prakte - the material world; param - beyond; kevala - only; anubhava -
experience; nanda - bliss; mtram - only; akaram - changeless; avyayam -
indestructible.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Hearing this, the Lord showed
them His own abode, where there is only bliss and there are neither decay nor
death, . . .

yatra vndvana nma


vana kma-dughair drumai manorama-nikujhya
sarvartu-sukha-samyutam

yatra - where; vndvanam - Vndvana; nma - named; vana- forest; kma-


dughai - fulfilling desires; drumai - with trees; manorama - beautiful; nikuja -
with forest groves; ahyam - opulent; sarva - in all; tu - seasons; sukha-
samyutam - with happiness.

. . . where there is the forest named Vndvana, which is opulent with beautiful
forests of trees that fulfill all desires, and which brings happiness in every
season, . . .

yatra govardhano nma

su-nirjhara-dar-yuta ratna-dhtu-maya rmn
su-paki-gaa-sakula

yatra - where; govardhana - Govardhana; nma - named; su- nirjhara - with


beautiful streams; dar - and caves; yuta - endowed; ratna - jewels; dhtu - and
minerals; maya - consisting; rmt - beautiful; su-paki-gaa- sakula - filled
with beautiful birds.

. . . where there is the hill named Govardhana, which has beautiful caves and
swiftly-moving streams, which is made of jewels and precious minerals, and
which is filled with graceful birds, . . .

yatra nirmala-pny
klind sarit var ratna-baddhobhaya-ta
hasa-padmdi-sakul

yatra - where; nirmala - pure; pny - water; klind - Yamun; saritm - of


streams; var - the best; ratna - with jewels; baddha - studded; ubhaya - both;
ta - banks; hasa - with swans; padma - and lotuses; di - beginning; sakul -
filled.

. . . where there is the Yamun, which is the best of rivers, which has pure and
delicious water, which is filled with lotuses, swans, and other flowers and birds,
and which has shores made of precious jewels, . . .

nn-rsa-rasonmatta
yatra gop-kadambakam tat-kadambaka-madhya-stha
kiorktir acyuta

nn - various; rsa - of rsa dances; rasa - by the nectar; unmattam -


intoxicated; yatra - where; gop - of gops; kadambakam - the multitude; tat-
kadambaka - of that multitude; madhya - in the middle; stha - standing; kiora
- youthful; kti - form; acyuta - the infallible Lord.

. . . and where the infallible Lord, whose form is that of a youth, stood among
many gops intoxicated by tasting the nectar of many rsa dances.

darayitveti ca prha
bruta ki karavi va do madyo loko 'yam
yato nsti para varam

darayitv - having seen; iti - thus; ca - also; prha - said; bruta - please tell;
kim - what?; karavi - shall I do; va - of you; da - seen; madya - My;
loka - realm; ayam - which; yata - than which; na - not; asti - is; param -
better; varam - benediction.

Having revealed this, the Lord said: What more shall I do for you? Tell Me. You
have seen My realm. There is no benediction better than (seeing it).

Text 28

r-rutaya cu

kandarpa-koi-lvaye
tvayi de mansi na kmin-bhvam sadya
smara-kubdhny asaayam

r-rutaya cu - the personified Vedas said; kandarpa - of Kmadevas;


koi - millions; lvaye - handsomeness; tvayi - when You; de - are seen;
mansi - hearts; na - our; kmin - of beautiful and amorous girls; bhvam -
the nature; sadya - attaining; smara - by amorous desires; kubdhni -
agitated; asaayam - without doubt.

When we see You in this way, more handsome than millions of Kmadevas,
our hearts become troubled with amorous desires and we yearn to become
beautiful girls. Of this there is no doubt.

Text 29

yath goloka-vsinya
kmintvena gopik bhajanti ramaa matv
cikrjani nas tath

yath - as; goloka-vsinya - the girls of Goloka; kmintvena - with the


status of being beautiful girls; gopik - gops bhajanti - worship; ramaam - a
lover; matv - considering; cikr - desire; ajani - is born; na - of us; tath -
so.

We yearn to become beautiful gops in Goloka who worship You as their lover.

durlabho durghaa caiva


yumka su-manoratha maynumodit samyak
satyo bhavitum arhati

r-hari uvca - r Hari said; durlabha - difficult to attain; durghaa -
impossible; ca - and; eva - indeed; yumkam - your; su - beautiful; manoratha
- desire; may - by Me; anumodit - allowed; samyak - completely; satya -
true; bhavitum - to be; arhati - is worthy.

r Hari said: Although your glorious desire is impossible and can never be
attained, I will grant it. It will become true.

gamini viricau tu
jte sy-artham udyate kalpa-srasvata prpya
vraje gopyo bhaviyatha

gamini - come; viricau - when Brahm; tu - indeed; jte - is born; si -


creation; artham - for the purpose; udyate - is manifested; kalpa-srasvatam -
the Srasvata-kalpa; prpya - attaining; vraje - in Vraja; gopya - gops;
bhaviyatha - you will become.

When a new Brahm is born to create (the universe), and the time of
Srasvata-kalpa arrives, you will become gops in Vraja.

pthivy bhrate ketre


mthure mama maale vndvane bhaviymi
preyn vo rasa-maale

pthivym - on the earth; bhrate - in Bhrata-vara; ketre - in the place;


mthure - in the district of Mathur; mama - My; maale - circle; vndvane - in
Vndvana; bhaviymi - I will become; preyn - the beloved; va - of you; rasa
- of the rsa dance; maale - in the circle.

On the earth, in Bhrata-vara, in the circle of Mathur, in Vndvana, in the


rsa-dance circle, I will become your beloved.

Text 33

jra-dharmea su-sneha
su-dha sarvato 'dhikam mayi samprpya sarv hi
ktkty bhaviyatha

jra-dharmea - as a paramour; su-sneham - affection; su- dham - firm;


sarvata - than all; adhikam - greater; mayi - for Me; samprpya - attaining;
sarv - all; hi - indeed; ktkty - usccessful; bhaviyatha - you will become.

Passionately loving Me as your paramour, you will all become perfect.

t ca gopyo bhaviyanti
prva-kalpa-varn mama anys caiva gopn
lakaa u tad vidhe

r-bhagavn uvca - the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; t - they; ca -


also; gopya - gops; bhaviyanti - will become; prva - previous; kalpa - from
the kalpa; varn - benedictions; mama - My; anysm - of other; ca - also; eva -
certainly; gopnm - gops; lakaam - characteristics; u - please hear; tat -
that; vidhe - O Brahm.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Because of the previous kalpa's


benediction they will become gops. O Brahm, now hear the description of the
other gops.

sur rakarthya
rkasn vadhya ca trety rmacandro 'bhd
vro daarathtmaja

surm - of the devotees; rakarthya - for protection; rkasnm - of


the demons; vadhya - for the killing; ca - also; tretym - in Tret-yuga;
rmacandra - Rmacandra; abht - was; vra - hero; daaratha - of Daaratha;
tmaja - the son.

To protect the devotees and kill the demons the Lord appeared in Tret-yuga
as Daaratha's son, the hero Rmacandra.

st-svayamvara gatv
dhanur-bhaga cakra sa uvha jnak st
rmo rjva-locana

st - of St; svayamvaram - to the svayamvara; gatv - having gone;


dhanu - of the bow; bhagam - breaking; cakra - did; sa - He; uvha - married;
jnakm - Janaka's daughter; stm - St; rma - Rma; rjva - lotus;
locana - eyed.

Lotus-eyed Rma went to St's svayamvara, broke the bow, and married
Janaka's daughter St.

ta dv maithil sarv

purandhryo mumuhur vidhe rahasy cur mahtmna
bhart no bhava he ragho

tam - Him; dv - seeing; maithil - the women of Mithil; sarv - all;


purandhrya - married; mumuhu - became agitated; vidhe - O Brahm; rahasi -
in a secluded place; cu - said; mahtmnam - to the Lord; bhart - the
husband; na - of us; bhava - please become; he - O; ragha - Raghu.

O Brahm, when they saw Him, all the married women of Mithil were
overcome with desire. In a secluded place they all approached the Lord and said,
"O descendent of Raghu, please become our husband."

t ha rghavendra ca
m oca kuruta striya dvparnte kariymi
bhavatn manoratham

t - to them; ha - said; rghava - of the Rghava dynasty; indra - the king;


ca - also; m - don't; ocam - lament; kuruta - do; striya - women; dvpara - of
Dvpara-yuga; ante - at the end; kariymi - I will do; bhavatnm - of you;
manoratham - the desire.

Rma, the king of the Rghavas, said to them, "O women, don't be unhappy.
At the end of Dvpara-yuga and I will fulfill your desire."

trtha dna tapo auca


samcarata tattvata raddhay paray bhakty
vraje gopyo bhaviyatha

trtham - pilgrimage; dnam - charity; tapa - austerity; aucam -


cleanliness; samcarata - perform; tattvata - in truth; raddhay - with faith;
paray - with great; bhakty - devotion; vraje - in Vraja; gopya - gops;
bhaviyatha - you will become.

With great faith and devotion honestly go on pilgrimages, give charity,


perform austerities, and follow the rules of cleanliness. Then you will become
gops in Vraja.

iti tbhyo vara datv


r-rma karu-nidhi koaln prayayau dhanv
tejas jita-bhrgava

iti - thus; tbhya - to them; varam - benediction; datv - giving; r-rma -
r Rma; karu - of mercy; nidhi - an ocean; koaln - to the country of the
Koalas; prayayau - went; dhanv - with His bow; tejas - with power; jita -
conquered; bhrgava - Paraurma.

After giving them this benediction, r Rma, who is an ocean of mercy and
an expert bowman, with His great prowess defeated Paraurma and then went
to the country of the Koalas.

mrge ca kaual naryo


rma dvti-sundaram manas vavrire ta vai
pati kandarpa-mohanam

mrge - on the road; ca - also; kaual narya - the women of Koala;


rmam - Lord Rma; dv - seeing; ati - very; sundaram - handsome; manas
- with their hearts; vavrire - chose; tam - Him; vai - indeed; patim - as their
husband; kandarpa - than many Kmadevas; mohanam - charming.

Seeing on the path very handsome Lord Rma, who is more charming than a
host of Kmadevas, the women of Koala in their hearts chose Him to be their
husband.

manaspi vara rmo


dadau tbhyo hy aea-vit manoratha kariymi
vraje gopyo bhaviyatha

manas - with the heart; api - also; varam - choice; rma - Rma; dadau -
gave; tbhya - them; hi - indeed; aea - all; vit - knowing; manoratham -
desire; kariymi - I will do; vraje - in Vraja; gopya - gops; bhaviyatha - you
will become.

In His heart all-knowing Rma gave them this benediction: "You will become
gops in Vraja, and then I will fulfill your desire."

gata stay srdha


sainyena raghu-nandanam ayodhy-pura-vsinya
rutv drau samyayu

gatam - arrived; stay - St; srdham - with; sainyena - army; raghu-


nandanam - the joy of the Raghus; ayodhy- pura-vsinya - the women of
Ayodhy; rutv - hearing; draum - to see; samyayu - came.

When He came with St and with His army, the women of Ayodhy went to
see the joy of the Raghus.

vkya ta moham pann


mrchit prema-vihval tepus tapas t sry-
tre rma-dhta-vrat
vkya - seeing; tam - Him; moham - agitation; pann - attained;
mrchit - fainted; prema - with love; vihval - overcome; tepus tapa - they
performed austerities; t - they; sry - of the Sary river; tre - on the
shore; rma-dhta-vrat - with a vow to attain Lord Rma.

Seeing Him, they become bewildered and fainted, overcome with love. With a
vow to attain Lord Rma they performed austerities on the Sary's bank.

ka-vg abht ts
dvparnte manoratha bhaviyati na sandeha

ka - from the sky; vk - a voice; abht - was; tsm - of them; dvpara - of


Dvpara-yuga; ante - at the end; manoratha - desire; bhaviyati - will be; na -
no; sandeha - doubt; klind - of the Yamun; tra - on the bank; je - born;
vane - in the forest.

A voice from the sky (said) to them, "At the end of Dvpara-yuga, in the
forest by the Yamun's shore, (your) desire will be fulfilled. Of this there is no
doubt."

pitur vkyd yad rmo


daakkhya vana gata cacra stay srdha
lakmaena dhanumat

pitu - of His father; vkyt - by the statement; yad - when; rma - Rma;
daaka - Daaka; khyam - named; vanam - to the forest; gata - gone;
cacra - went; stay - St; srdham - with; lakmaena - and Lakmaa;
dhanumat - the expert bowman.

Then, because of His father's words, He went with St and the expert
bowman Lakmaa to the Daaka forest.

goplopsak sarve

daakraya-vsina dhyyanta satata m vai
rsrtha dhyna-tat-par

gopla - of Lord Gopla; upsak - worshipers; sarve - all; daakraya-


vsina - the residents of the Daaka forest; dhyyanta - meditating; satatam
- always; mm - on Me; vai - indeed; rsa - the rsa dance; artham - for the
purpose; dhyna-tat- par - rapt in meditation.

All the sages in the Daaka forest were worshipers of Lord Gopla. To attain
the rsa dance they always meditated on Me.

Text 48

yem ramam sadya


dhanur-ba-dharo yuv te dhyne gato rmo
ja-mukua-maita

yem - of whom; ramam - the hermitage; sadya - attaining; dhanu -


bow; ba - and arrows; dhara - holding; yuv - young; tem - of them;
dhyne - in meditation; gata - gone; rma - rma; ja-mukua-maita -
decorated with matted locks of hair.

He came to their rama as a youth carrying bow and arrows. Then He


appeared in their meditation as a sage with matted hair.

anykti te ta vkya
para vismita-mnas dhynd utthya dadu
koi-kandarpa-sannibham

anya - another; ktim - form; te - they; tam - Him; vkya - seeing; param -
then; vismita - surprised; mnas - at heart; dhynt - from meditation;
utthya - rising; dadu - they saw; koi - millions; kandarpa - of Kmadeva's;
sannibham - like.

Surprised at heart by seeing this other form, they rose from their meditation
and saw Lord Rma, who was like millions of Kmadevas.

cus te 'ya nu goplo


va-vetre vin prabhu ittha vicrya manas
nemu cakru stuti parm

cu - said; te - they; ayam - He; nu - indeed; gopla - is Gopla; va - a


flute; vetre - and stick; vin - without; prabhu - the Lord; ittham - thus; vicrya -

thinking; manas - with their heart; nemu - bowed down; cakru - did; stutim -
prayers; parm - great.

They said, "He is Lord Gopla, who has come without His flute and stick."
Thinking in this way in their hearts, they bowed down and offered eloquent
prayers.

vara vta munaya


r-rmas tn uvca ha
yath st tath sarve
bhya sma iti vdina

varam - a benediction; vta - please choose; munaya - O sages; r-


rma - r Rma; tn - to them; uvca - said; ha - indeed; yath - as; st -
St; tath - so; sarve - all; bhya sma - let us become; iti - thus; vdina -
saying.

r Rma said to them, "O sages, please choose a benediction." They said,
"As St is, so let us all become."

yath hi lakmao bhrt


tath prrthyo varo yadi adyaiva sa-phalo bhvyo
bhavadbhir mat-prasagata

r-rma uvca - r Rma said; yath - as; hi - indeed; lakmaa -


Lakmaa; bhrt - brother; tath - so; prrthya - requested; vara -
benediction; yadi - if; adya - today; eva - indeed; sa-phala - fruitful; bhvya -
will be; bhavadbhi - by you; mat - of Me; prasagata - by the association.

r Rma said: If you had asked this of My brother Lakmaa, I would


arrange that today your wish would bear its fruit.

Text 53

st yatheti vkyena
durghao durlabho vara eka-patn-vrato 'ha vai
maryd-puruottama

st - Sit; yath - as; iti - thus; vkyena - by the statement; durghaa -


impossible; durlabha - unattainable; vara - benediction; eka - one; patn -
wife; vrata - vow; aham - I; vai - indeed; maryd - of the rules of religion;
purua - of persons; uttama - the best.

This request, to become "as St is" is impossible and can never be granted. I
have vowed to accept only one wife, and I am the best of they who follow the
rules of religion.

Text 54

tasmt tu mad-varepi
dvparnte bhaviyatha manoratha kariymi
bhavat vchita param

tasmt - therefore; tu - indeed; mat - of Me; varea - by the benediction; api -


also; dvpara-ante - at the end of Dvpara-yuga; bhaviyatha - you will become;
manoratham - desire; kariymi - I will do; bhavatm - of you; vchitam -
desired; param - then.

For this reason, by My benediciton, at the end of Dvpara- yuga you will
become (as She). Then I will fulfill your wish.

iti datv vara rmas


tata pacavat gata para-la samsdya
vana-vsa cakra ha

iti - thus; datv - having given; varam - benediction; rma - Rma; tata -
then; pacavatm - to the Pa{.sy 241}cavat forest; gata - went; para - of
leaves; lam - a cottage; samsadya - attaining; vana - in the forest; vsam -
residence; cakra - did; ha - indeed.

After giving this benediction, Rma went to Pa{.sy 241}cavat. He went to a


leaf-hut, and there He lived in the forest.

tad-darana-smara-ruja
pulindya prema-vihval rmat-pda-rajo dhtv
prns tyaktu samudyat

tat - of Him; darana - by the sight; smara - with amorous desires; ruja -
agitated; pulindya - Pulinda girls; prema - with love; vihval - overcome;
rmat - of the handsome Lord; pda - of the feet; raja - the dust; dhtv -
holding; prnn - life; tyaktum - to abandon; samudyat - were ready.

When they saw Him, some aborigine girls became tortured with lust.
Overcome with love, they grasped the dust of His feet, intent on then giving up
their lives.

brahmacri-vapur bhtv
rmas tatra samgata uvca pra-santyga
m kryata striyo vth

brahmacri - of a brahmacri; vapu - the form; bhtv - becoming; rma -


Rma; tatra - there; samgata - went; uvca - said; pra - of life; santygam -
giving up; m - don't; kryata - do; striya - O women; vth - uselessly.

Assuming the form of a brahmacr, Rma went to them and said, "O women,
do not give up your lives without good reason.

Text 58

vndvane dvparnte
bhavit vo manoratha ity uktv brahmacr tu
tatraivntardhyata

vndvane - in Vndvana; dvpara-ante - at the end of Dvpara-yuga;


bhavit - will become; va - of you; manoratha - the desire; iti - thus; uktv -
saying; brahmacr - the brahmacr; tu - certainly; tatra - there; eva - indeed;
antardhyata - disappeared.

"In Vndvana, at the end of Dvpara-yuga, your desire will be fulfilled."


Saying this, the brahmacr disappeared.

Text 59

atha rmo vnarendrai


rvadn nicarn jitv lakm etya st-
pupakena pura yayau

atha - then; rma - Rma; vnara - of monkeys; indrai - with the kings;
rvaa-dn - beginning with rvaa; nicarn - demons, who move in the
night; jitv - defeating; lakm - Lak; etya - going; st - St; pupakena - on
a flower-chariot; puram - to His own city; yayau - went.

Then, aided by the monkey-kings, Rma defeated the nocturnal demons


headed by Rvaa, entered Lak and, on a flower-chariot carrying St,
returned to His own city.

Text 60

st tatyja rjendro
vane lokpavdata aho satm api bhuvi
bhavana bhri-dukha-dam

stm - St; tatyja - renouncing; rja - of kings; indra - the king; vane - in
the forest; loka - of the people; apavdata - because of the criticism; aha - ah;
satm - of the saintly devotees; api - also; bhuvi - in the world; bhavanam -
manifestation; bhri - great; dukha - pain; dam - giving.

Then, because of the criticism of the ordinary people, Rma, the king of
kings, abandoned St in the forest. Ah, this brought great pain to the saintly
devotees in the world.

Text 61

yad yadkarod yaja


rmo rajva-locana tad tad svaramay
st ktv vidhnata

yad yad - whenever; akarot - performed; yajam - a sacrifice; rma -


Rma; rajva - lotus; locana - eyed; tad - then; tad - then; svaramaym -
golden; stm - St; ktv - making; vidhnata - according to the rules of
religion.

Whenever he performed a yaja, lotus-eyed Rma, following the rules of


religion, had made a golden Deity of St.

yaja-st-samho 'bhn
mandire rghavasya ca t caitanya-ghan bhtv
rantu rma samgata

yaja-st-samha - a multitude of these Deities; abht - was; mandire - in


the palace; rghavasya - of Rma; ca - and; t - they; caitanya-ghan bhtv -
having come to life; rantum - to enjoy; rmam - to Rma; samgata - went.

In Rma's palace there were many of these yaja Deities of St. (One day)
they came to life and approached Rma to enjoy (with Him).

Text 63

t ha raghu-vaendro
nha ghnmi he priy tadocus t prema-par
rma daarathtmajam

t - to them; ha - said; raghu-vaa-indra - the king of the Raghu dynasty;


na - not; aham - I; ghnmi - I accept; he - O; priy - O beloveds; tad - then;
cu - said; t - they; prema-par - full of love; rmam - to Rma; daaratha -
of Daaratha; tmajam - the son.

To them Rma, the king of the Raghu dynasty, said, {.sy 168}O beloved
wives, I cannot accept you". Then, filled with love, they said to Rma, the son of
Daaratha, . . .

katha csmn na ghnsi


bhajantr maithil sat ardhg yaja-kleu
satata krya-sdhin

katham - why?; ca - and; asmn - us; na - not; ghnsi - You accept;


bhajant - the worshiping; maithil sat - chaste women of Mithil; ardha -
half; ag - Your body; yaja - of the yaja; kleu - at the times; satatam - always;
krya- sdhin - performing duties with You.

. . . "Why do You not accept us? We are all St, the chaste daughter of the king
of Mithil. We are half of Your body. At the time of the yajas we were Your
assistants.

Text 65

dharmihas tva ruti-dharo


'dharmavad bhase katham kara ghitv tyajasi
tata ppam avpsyasi

dharmiha - religious; tvam - You; ruti-dhara - aware of the teachings of


the Vedas; adharmavat - like an impious person; bhase - You speak; katham -
why?; karam - hand; ghitv - taking; tyajasi - You reject; tata - then; ppam -
sin; avpsyasi - You will attain.

"You are a pious person. You know the teaching of the Vedas. Why do You
speak as one who is impious? First You take our hand and then You reject us.
From this You will incur sin."

r-rma uvca

samcna vaca satya


yumbhir gadita ca me eka-patn-vrato 'ha hi
rjari stayaikay

r-rma uvca - r Rma said; samcnam - right; vaca - statement;


satyam - truth; yumbhi - by you; gaditam - said; ca - also; me - of Me; eka -
one; patn - wife; vrata - vow; aham - I; hi - Indeed; rja - king; i - sage;
stay - by St; ekay - alone.

r Rma said: Your words are right. What you say to Me is true. (Still,) I am
religious king, and I have vowed to accept only St as My wife.

Text 67

tasmd yya dvparnte


puye vndvane vane bhaviyath kariymi
yumka tu manoratham

tasmt - therefore; yyam - you; dvpara - of Dvpara-yuga; ante - at the


end; puye - spiritual; vndvane - in Vndvana; vane - forest; bhaviyatha -
you will be; kariymi - I will do; yumkam - of you; tu - certainly; manoratham
- the desire.

Therefore at the end of Dvpara-yuga you will take birth in the spiritual land
of Vndvana, and there I will fulfill your desire.

Text 68

t vraje 'pi bhaviyanti


yaja-st ca gopik anys caiva gopn
lakaa u tad vidhe

t - they;a vraje - in Vraja; api - and; bhaviyanti - will be; yaja-st - the
yaj-sts; ca - also; gopik - gops; anysm - of other; ca - also; eva - indeed;
gopnm - gops; lakaam - characteristics; u - please hear; tat - that;
vidhe - O Brahm.

These yaja Deities of St will also become gops in Vraja. Now hear, O
Brahm, of the other gops.
