Northwest Halifax High School

Teacher Walkthrough Observation Feedback

Teacher: _______________ Date: 10/31/2016 Time: 10:58 am

Course: English II Honors Observer: Tonya D. Jones, Principal Resident

What I saw:
Daily Nine was displayed and current.
Visual Aids/charts displayed throughout the room to reinforce learning
Students were working in small groups
The teacher was visible throughout the room monitoring student activities to ensure that they were on-
task.
The culture of the room allowed students to feel safe sharing ideas and contributing to the class
discussion.

What I enjoyed:
The teacher used a variety of instructional methods during the lesson on characterization and plot
interpretation of The Avalanche (cooperative learning groups, class discussions, direct instruction from
the teacher, corrective feedback, and cues/questioning).
The teacher was enthusiastic about the lesson and the activities that the students were working on.
The teacher prompted the students by using inquiry to have them further explain their points.
Group presentations allowed the students to re-state their findings from the reading as well as offer
suggestions to other groups

What I would suggest:

Reiterate your expectations regarding the processes for working in groups. Students had to be reminded
several times about their noise levels.
Challenge students to use more complex higher-order thinking skills for presentations such as defending
their positions.
When working in small groups, the group closest to the door would need to be relocated. It was difficult
to navigate around that space.

Follow-up activities
Consistently incorporate question words in your delivery (analyze, infer, imply, trace, explain, etc.)
Link concepts to the students prior knowledge. Allow them to make the connections.
