G0010711
5.2 Separation by gravity
A turbid liquid in a stationary vessel will clear
slowly as the heavy particles in the liquid mixture
are sinking to the bottom under the influence of
gravity. The lighter liquid phase will rise while the
heavier sinks.
Continuous separation and sedimentation can be
achieved in a settling tank having the outlets
arranged at levels suited to the density ration of
the two liquid phases. Any solid and heavier
particles in the liquid mixture will settle and form a
sediment layer on the tank bottom.
G0010821
5.3 Centrifugal
separation
In a rapidly rotating vessel the gravity is replaced
by the centrifugal force, which can be thousands
of times greater. Separation and sedimentation
are continuous and very fast. When liquid and
solid particles in a liquid mixture are subjected to
the centrifugal force in a separator bowl, it takes
only a few seconds to achieve what takes many
hours in a tank under influence of gravity.

S0000321
Preventive maintenance
The directions for maintenance prescribe the
safety inspections which, with preventive
maintenance, are periodically followed up by the
user. In doing so he will discover any defects
before safety is jeopardized.
Corrective maintenance
With corrective maintenance the safety
inspections according to the directions for
maintenance must be carried out specially from a
separate program by the user.
73
10.2 Major bowl parts 10 General advice
10.2.1 Balancing
Alfa Laval separator bowls are static and
dynamically factory balanced only as complete
bowl assemblies.
Therefore, major bowl parts cannot be replaced
without rebalancing the entire bowl.
Bowl parts must never be interchanged from one
machine to an other. This is just as imperative
where machines of the same or a similar type are
concerned. The bowl parts of each machine are
stamped with the machine manufacturing number
or the last three digits of that number.
G0713231
10.2.2 Locating means
The bowl parts are assembled in a certain relative
position to each other. Alignment marks, guide
pins and lugs are provided on major parts and
must be undamaged and legible.
Never operate the machine when these locating
means are not in the proper relative position, or
are illegible.
G0713411
74
10 General advice 10.2 Major bowl parts
10.2.3 Handling
Great forces are generated when a separator
bowl rotates. Its parts must, therefore, be high-
precision made to ensure perfect relative fit. The
size of the bowl parts may easily give the
impression that they need not be handled with the
care that is, in fact, essential where precision-
made articles are concerned. Any carelessness
in this respect will very likely result in seizure
damage.
Besides, the risk of seizure will increase when
two or more parts in contact with each other are
made of stainless steel and not properly
G0713311
lubricated.
75
10.3 Corrosion 10 General advice
10.3 Corrosion
Evidence of corrosion attacks should be looked
for and rectified each time the separator is
dismantled. Main bowl parts such as the bowl
body, bowl hood and lock ring must be inspected
with particular care for corrosion damage.
WARNING
Disintegration hazard
G0713311
Always contact your Alfa Laval representative if
you suspect that the largest depth of the
corrosion damage exceeds 1,0 mm or if cracks
have been found. Do not continue to use the
separator until it has been inspected and given
clearance for operation by Alfa Laval.
Cracks or damage forming a line should be
considered as being particularly hazardous.
76
10 General advice 10.3 Corrosion
S0020611
risk of chloride corrosion is higher if the surface is:
Exposed to a stationary solution.
In a crevice.
Covered by deposits.
Exposed to a solution that has a low pH
value.
Corrosion damage caused by chlorides on
stainless steel begins as small dark spots that
can be difficult to detect.
Inspect closely for all types of damage by
corrosion and record these observations
carefully.
Polish dark-coloured spots and other
corrosion marks with a fine grain emery cloth.
S0020511
This may prevent further damage.
WARNING
Disintegration hazard
77
10.4 Erosion 10 General advice
10.4 Erosion
Erosion can occur when particles suspended in
the process liquid slide along or strike against a
surface. Erosion can become intensified locally by
flows of higher velocity.
WARNING
Disintegration hazard
G0205211
Inspect regularly for erosion damage.
Inspect frequently if the process liquid is
erosive.
WARNING
Disintegration hazard
78
10 General advice 10.5 Cracks
10.5 Cracks
Cracks can initiate on the machine after a period
of operation and propagate with time.
Cracks often initiate in an area exposed to
high cyclic material stresses. These are
called fatigue cracks.
Cracks can also initiate due to corrosion in an
aggressive environment.
Although very unlikely, cracks may also occur
due to the low temperature embrittlement of
certain materials.
The combination of an aggressive environment
and cyclic stresses will speed-up the formation of
cracks. Keeping the machine and its parts clean
and free from deposits will help to prevent
corrosion attacks.
WARNING
Disintegration hazard
79
10.6 Vibration 10 General advice
10.6 Vibration
Abnormal vibration or noises are clues that
something is wrong. Stop the machine and look
for the cause.
If vibration analyzing equipment is available, use
this equipment to periodically check and record
S0055611
the magnitude of vibration.
WARNING
Disintegration hazard
10.7 Cleaning
When using chemical cleaning agents
observe general rules and suppliers
recommendations as to ventilation, personal
protection etc.
Frame / motor
Never wash down a separator with a direct hosing
to the same extent as open motors and even
more than those, because:
1. many operators believe that these motors are
sealed, and normally they are not.
2. a water jet played on these motors will
produce an internal vacuum, which will such
the water between the metal-to metal contact
surfaces into the windings, and this water
cannot escape.
3. water directed on a hot motor may cause
condensation, and subsequently produce
grounding and internal corrosion.

10 General advice 10.8 Lubrication
G0666511
10.7.1 Coupling pads (if any) and
brake lining
To degrease pads or lining and the corresponding
friction surfaces us a suitable degreasing agent.
G0666611
10.7.2 Other parts
Use white spirit, cleaning kerosene or any other
solvent with equivalent properties.
10.8 Lubrication
Wipe and oil all parts after cleaning. Protect the
parts against dust and dirt when not to be
mounted at once.
Follow strictly the lubrication instructions given for
the bowl lock ring joint. G0666711
81
10.9 Shut-downs 10 General advice
10.9 Shut-downs
If the machine is shut down for some time, the
bowl should not be left on the spindle, and its O-
rings should be removed.
When the machine is to be set in operation again:
After some weeks
Lubricate top bearing with some drops of oil
Check electric insulation in motor. If
necessary dry up the motor to obtain correct
insulation value.
Flush the pipings clean.
G0666811
After some months
Fit and lubricate new O-rings in the bowl.
Check the rubber discs between motor shaft
and worm wheel shaft with respect to cracks.
Replace if necessary.

4. Cage
Do not use other bearings than those stated in
the Spare Parts Catalogue.
A bearing that in appearance looks equivalent to
the correct bearing may be considerably different
from the latter in various respects: inside
clearances, design and tolerances of the cage
and ball (roller) races as well as material and heat
treatment. Any deviation from the correct
bearing may cause a serious breakdown.
10.11.1 Dismounting
Detach the bearing from its seat by pressing
against the race having the tightest fit. Use a
puller or a special tool. Thus, apply the pressure
to the inner race when the bearing sits tightly on
G0654111
the shaft, and to the outer race when the bearing
is tightly fitted in the housing respectively.
Arrange dismounted bearings and other parts in
assembling order to avoid confusion.
Check the shaft end and the bearing seat in the
housing for damage indicating that the bearing

10.11.2 Fitting
Leave new bearings in original wrapping until
ready to fit. The antirust agent protecting a new
bearing need not to be removed.
G0654311
Fit a bearing on a shaft by pressure applied to the
inner race and in a housing by pressure applied to
the outer race. Use a suitable piece of pipe or a
metal drift and a hammer. Never strike the
bearing directly.

11.3 Bowl 11 Dismantling / assembly
11.3.1 Dismantling
Outlet device and frame hood must be removed
Screw in the lock screws in the frame until they
just bottom the recesses of the bowl body.
Unscrew the bowl lock ring clockwise by
means of the bowl spanner.
Lift off the bowl hood.
Lift the distributor with disc set out of the bowl
body. Place the distributor on a wooden base.
G0713911
If the bowl body should be taken out of the frame:
Unscrew the cap nut clockwise and insert
the protecting sleeve in the spindle top.
Back off the lock screws a little so that they do
not prevent vertical movement of the bowl
body.
When several separators of the same type and
size are used in a plant, it is essential not to
interchange the parts of the different bowls, as
each bowl forms a balanced unit. A bowl
assembled with parts belonging to other
separators will get out of balance, and this causes
bad running (vibrations). To prevent confusion,
the main parts of each bowl are stamped with the
same number.

12.1 Frame 12 Installation
12.1 Frame
12.1.1 Mounting
The base for the separator should be solid. Three
sets of resilient anchoring parts are supplied with
the separator, including anchoring feet to be
embedded in the base. For levelling the feet use
G0715511
preferably a wooden templet. The measurements
between the holes in the frame are given in the
holes in the frame are given in the foundation
drawing, see chapter 3.3 Drawings on page 24.
Slip the sleeves over the feet and screw down the
stud bolts (the short thread) tightly. Place the
templet on the feet and fasten it with the cap nuts.
Make holes for the anchoring feet. Calculate the
depth of the holes starting from measurement X,
that is the distance between the top faces of the
feet and the base. The numerical value of
measurement X is given in the foundation
drawing, see chapter 3.3 Drawings on page 24.
Put the feet in the holes. Level the templet so as
to bring the top faces of the feet into the same
G0715611
horizontal plane. The free height of the feet above
the base can differ somewhat from measurement
X due to the drain slope of the base.
Carry out the casting. Remove the templet when
the concrete has hardened. Then fill the space
between the anchoring feet and the sleeves
entirely with concrete.
Slip
1 steel washer
1 large rubber cushion
1 small rubber cushion
over each stud bolt
Put the frame in place. It is essential that the stud
bolts do not press against the edges of the frame
holes, as they would otherwise prevent the
resilient mounting of the frame.

Las tolerancias de fabricacin son sumamente
pequeas. Las piezas rotativas estn
cuidadosamente equilibradas para reducir
vibraciones no deseadas que pueden causar
averas. En el diseo se han considerado
concienzudamente las propiedades del material
para resistir los esfuerzos y la fatiga.
La separadora est diseada y suministrada para
una operacin especfica (tipo de lquido,
velocidad de rotacin, temperatura, densidad,
etc.) y no debe utilizarse para ningn otro
propsito.
La operacin y mantenimiento incorrectos
pueden causar desequilibrio debido a la
acumulacin de sedimentos, reduccin de la
resistencia del material, etctera, los cuales
pueden posteriormente dar lugar a averas y/o
lesiones graves.
Por tanto, rigen las siguientes instrucciones de
seguridad bsica:
Usar la separadora solamente para el
propsito y el rango de parmetros
especificados por Alfa Laval.
Observar estrictamente las instrucciones

10.1 El concepto de
mantenimiento

mayor velocidad.
ADVERTENCIA
Riesgo de desintegracin

10 Consejos generales 10.5 Grietas
10.5 Grietas
Tras un perodo de funcionamiento, la mquina
puede empezar a presentar principios de grietas
que se propagan con el tiempo.
Las grietas suelen iniciarse en reas
expuestas a tensiones materiales cclicas
elevadas. Se denominan grietas por fatiga.
Las grietas tambin pueden iniciarse debido
a la corrosin de un entorno agresivo.
Aunque es muy improbable, tambin pueden
producirse debido a la fisuracin de ciertos
materiales por baja temperatura.
La combinacin de un entorno agresivo y
tensiones cclicas acelerar la formacin de
grietas. Si mantiene la mquina y sus piezas
limpias y libres de depsitos, contribuir a evitar
los daos por corrosin.

11.3.1 Desmontaje

G0715511
las patas, utilice preferiblemente una plantilla de
madera. Las medidas entre los orificios situados
en el bastidor aparecen en el plano de anclaje;
A continuacin,
