Chapter 3: Developing Ethical Competence

There are several classes throughout my undergraduate and graduate career that
have asked the same question, Describe a situation in which was ethically challenging
for you as a professional. Years later it continues to be a difficult question for me to
answer, not because it makes me uncomfortable, but because I have rarely come across an
ethical issue. I understand that it will be something that arises throughout my career, but
for now I am attempting to practice good ethical standards.
There have been a few times where a client has made a racist and derogatory
comments against my own race. That was very hard for me to swallow but I paid no mind
to the comments and just kept communicating with the individual normally. At first I did
have feelings of anger but then I was able to re-group and collect my thoughts and started
thinking about how the individual was not directing his comments at me.
I have learned in this field, especially the clinical aspect of the field, you cannot
take offense to anything, no matter how natural it may be to take offense. I have been
called every curse name in the book and have been screamed at and even spit on. The
important part about his profession is to always remain professional no matter the
situation.
