Original Lesson Plan

Standard(s): 3RL3: Describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or


feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events

Materials:
Student copies of Ida Early Comes Over the Mountain
EQ: How is the story influenced by point of view?
Critical Vocabulary: facts, details, recount, descriptive details
Lesson: The teacher will read aloud the following chapters: After School, Changes,
and Checker Games and the Curling Iron.

The teacher should discuss the chapters with the students through answering
the following questions:
1 What do they mean when the twins say that Ida wouldnt leave us? (DOK2)
2 Compare the old Ida with the new Ida. (DOK2)
3 Why would Ida not open the package that came in the mail? (DOK3)
4 Why do you think Ida is no longer cheerful? (DOK3)

The students should begin completing a character web. The student should list the
characters name, the characters traits in the beginning of the book, and a direct
reference from the book. This should be a guided instruction using a character from the
book.
Assignment: Students will complete character web of a character and their traits from
the beginning of the book.
Closing: Students will share their character webs with the class.

EQ: How is the story influenced by point of view?
Critical Vocabulary: facts, details, recount, descriptive details
Activating Strategy: Using Socrative Student, students will share character traits
they are familiar with. This will generate a list that can be brought up on the ActivBoard.
The teacher will make additions and suggestions as needed.
Lesson: Students will listen to the following chapters using ShowMe: After School,
Changes, and Checker Games and the Curling Iron. Comprehension questions will be
asked at the end of the chapters.

The assignment will also be explained after the questions.
Assignment: Students will create a character trait web using Popplet. This app allows
students create a map of character traits with text evidence by taking pictures and
annotating over the text. Students will need at least 3 character traits with evidence.
Closing: Students will share their Popplet web with a friend.
