1.

On which code is the current North Carolina Building Code based (Ordinance section
at http://codes.iccsafe.org/app/book/toc/2012/North_Carolina/BUilding/index.html)?
The International Building Code

2. Using the International Building Code, find the use and occupancy classification of the
proposed new CEEC/CTEC School Building.
Six or more people (17 people for UNCC classes)

3. Using the PowerPoint from this Activity, describe each of the four types of construction.
Based on your proposed structure, under which of these types of construction could the
CEEC/CTEC building fall?
Steel framing encased with concrete - Steel Framings that have concrete poured around them
in order to be flame resistant
Steel framing - Steel beams makes up the entirety of the frame
Noncombustible exterior, treated wood interior - Fire retardant materials are placed to the
exterior of the building, while wood treated to be fireproof are the interior
Heavy timber - Most, if not all structures are made from wood.
CEEC/CTEC Building could use Construction Type I (steel framing encased in concrete)

4. Compare the allowable building heights and areas (IBC 2015 table 504.4) for the School
using different construction types. What is the least restrictive construction type that can be
used for the School? Is a fire-protective layer required over the structural elements? Note: The
letter A indicates that the structural members are protected by a fire-rated coating or cover
(gypsum wallboard, spray-on, or another approved method). The letter B indicates that the
structural members are not protected by an additional fire-rated coating or cover.
Educational: Unlimited Floors with fire protection. 5 without sprinkler system and 6 with sprinkler
system

5. What materials do you propose to use for the new interior walls and floor for the
Keystone Building? Justify your answer.
- Wall- Cast in place concrete should be used because it has brick to match the
outside, its durable and the wall shape can be modified and it is also non flammable
- Floor- Composite Slab Design because it can carry more weight for a lower price
and it als depend on what we doing with too such as design.
- Roof- System Drainage Board because it is tougher and provides for the needs
of plants.( GREEN PRODUCT AND BETTER FOR ENVIRONMENT) The strength aids
in the number of patrons that will want to see the green roof and the plant care will make
the green roof easier to maintain, due the sun and light that is being available for us.

6. Use the IBC to determine the occupant load (IBC 2012 section 1004) for the School
assuming a second floor is added.
Classroom- 30 occupants
30 occupants per classroom
1st Floor- 1198 occupants
500 occupants in cafeteria
350 occupants in auditorium
180 occupants in the gym
128 occupants in the library
40 occupants in Office

2nd Floor- 578 occupants

450 occupants in classrooms
128 occupants in library

Basement- 2275 occupants

128 occupants in library
587 occupants in lockers
800 occupants in band room
600 occupants in dance room
160 occupants in green room

7. The occupant load is used to determine the minimum egress width for each section of
the building. Use the IBC to determine the required total egress width (IBC 2015 section
1005.3.2) for the School and for the second floor alone (IBC 2015 section 1005.3.1).
Classroom- 6 feet
1st Floor- 240 feet
2nd Floor- 115.6 feet
Basement- 445 feet

8. Read IBC 2015 section 1022. What is the minimum number of exits required for the
occupant load?
The minimum requirement for occupant load would be 2 doors (2 per classroom) doors
(excluding emergency)

The answers to the following should be researched in the Code of Ordinances City of Charlotte
(https://www.municode.com/library/nc/charlotte/codes/code_of_ordinances) and the City
of Charlotte Zoning Map.

9. In which zoning designation does the CEEC/CTEC School Building property lie? (Refer
to the Virtual Charlotte Map at http://vc.charmeck.org/ to help locate the site on the zoning
map. Click Planning, and Zoning).
Institutional because of the college campus.

10. Describe the purpose of this zoning designation. Document your answer with a section
number from the code (Code of Ordinance Appendix A).
The reason of zoning designation is to promote health, safety, and general welfare by promoting
efficient use of space, water, air, light, and public facilities and services. Zoning designations
also consider future growth and development as well as take into account the preservation of
the current use of the land. (Section 1.102)

11. Is the use proposed in CEEC/CTEC School permitted on this property? Document your
answer.
The CEEC/CTEC School does fit to be in an institutional property because it is the development
of an educational service that benefits the community around it, such as student or other
building within campus.(Section 9.501)
