Driver Ed. Chapter 8 Lesson 2 Lesson Length 45 mins

Preparation:
Lesson aim for today: Today I will be using reciprocal teaching method to go over responses
to manage space and time

SOL: DE.4 The student will demonstrate the ability to manage visibility, time, and space to avoid
conflicts and reduce driving risks. Key concepts/skills include a) synthesizing information
visually from the driving environment, using a space-management process; b) applying
following-distance, time, and space concepts

Introduction: I will start off by doing an activity that will help show the students human
perception and human reaction. I will hold a ruler at the top of a student's hand and drop it and
they have to catch it. By doing this they will see that by the time I drop it and they catch it they
will be a couple of inches on the ruler because it takes a moment for one's brain to recognize
and react.

Review: Not applicable

Lesson Content: I will have the students get their books out and turn to Chapter 8 lesson 2 and
look over it for a few moments.

Teach the lesson:


Activities: I will split the class up into groups of four and assign each students a part (predictor,
reader, clarifier, summarizer) The predictor will look at the title and the session and try to predict
what the section is going to be about, the reader will read the session, the clarifier will talk over
with their group to make sure everyone understands, and the summarizer will write a short
summary about the session. The the students will switch roles and repeat the process with a
different session. There will be a total of 9 different sessions.

Materials needed: Books

Check for understanding: As the students talk about what they wrote I will listen and make
sure they are getting the main points.

Lesson closure
Conclusion of lesson: I will remind my students that react time isn't as fast as most people
believe it to be.

Reinforcement: There will be no homework.
