EdTPA Lesson Plan #3 Elementary Math Sharlet Mullen 12160144

Instructor: Subject Area: Math - Topic 9 Lesson 4 Grade: Date:

Sharlet Mullen Subtraction Two-Digit Numbers/ Second-Grade 2/1/2017
Models to Subtract Two and One-digit Numbers
Information about the Lesson
Context/Rationale:
There is more than one algorithm (a step by step process to do calculations) when subtracting two-digit
numbers. Subtracting whole numbers is based on the relationship of whole numbers and place-value.
Using prior connections, models, kinesthetic, strategies, practice, justification and addition students will
gain a solid understanding of the algorithm for subtraction.

Prerequisites:
Students have a well-developed comfort with basic addition and subtraction facts. Students understand
place-value and regrouping with addition.

Materials Needed:
Teacher:
Math magazine 9-4 (one each per student) 3.1
Math Scoot Game 3.2
Technology:
Problem of the day (Displayed)
Doc camera projected onto smartboard
Everyday Student supplies:
Pencil box (pencil, glue, crayons, markers)
White board and marker.
Math folders, playing cards, and math notebook

Lesson Content and Design

Central Focus / Big Idea:
By breaking standard subtraction problems into simpler calculation, a person should always start with the
ones and then move to the tens. Looking ahead students understanding will help with money, estimating,
problem solving and finding missing parts.

Objective(s):
Students will use standard subtraction to subtract a two-digit number from a two-digit number with or
without regrouping. Students will move to mastery level with subtracting two-digit numbers from two-digit
numbers.

Guiding Question(s):
How do you know when to regroup when subtracting two-digit numbers from two-digit numbers?
Where do we start when subtracting a two-digit number from another two-digit number?

Assessment:
formative - Small group guided practice will guide the teacher when to move students to independent
practice. The formative assessment will allow the teacher to plan and adjust for future lessons with
subtracting two-digit numbers.
summative The teacher is looking for 90% accuracy with the subtraction scoot assessment,
acknowledging the students are ready for addition to check subtraction two-digit numbers from two-digit
numbers

Language Development:
Students are learning to interpret the multiple strategies and representations about subtraction and
regrouping. Students are beginning to justify how the strategies help compute mathematical problems.
Students can envision that regroup means to reorganize the numbers from one column to another.
Students justify through independent practice their knowledge of the subtraction algorithm.

MN Content Standard(s): 2.1.2.1 - 2. Second Grade. 1.Numbers and Operations 2. Whole Number:
Operations 1. Use strategies to generate addition and subtraction facts including making tens, fact

families, doubles plus or minus one, counting on, counting back, and the commutative and associative
properties. Use the relationship between addition and subtraction to generate basic facts.

cookies does Paco have left?

Reading what they wrote First, I, Next I, and Finally I. (Project the problem of
the day on the smartboard for all to see the process of solving the problem of
the day)

Today we will learn to subtract a two-digit number from a two-digit number.

If we write the subtraction problems 31-6 = and 31-16= vertically side by side

Ask: How are these problems alike? (the number in the ones is the same)
How are they different? (The second problem is subtracting 1 ten
more)
Where would we begin with this problem? (Look and the ones and
deciding if we need to regroup)
Do we need to regroup? Yes, Why?

Station 1 Subtraction Scoot Two-digit subtraction hunt/practice
There are 24 cards spread around the room.
Your job is to scoot quietly around the room solving each of the math
problems.
Only one person at each math problem at a time. If someone is there find a
different one to try.
For each problem, you must show your work and write your answer in the
box with the correct number.

the top. Work together through the Guided Practice Students can move at
their own pace if they are feeling comfortable.
Everyone work on the Independent Practice on your own. Reminder regroup
if you need to.
Where do you start subtraction? With the number in the ones. Then, the tens.
Complete the Do you Understand? on both magazines and answer why.
Problem solving for homework.

practice of writing the equations building an understanding when subtracting
the greater number is on the top.
(formative assessment)
Confirm: that Summative assessment The subtraction scoot data will help the teacher
the students build future instruction. If the students answer the problems with 90% accuracy
have they are ready to begin the lesson on using addition to check subtracting two-
accomplishe digit numbers from two-digit numbers.
d the Formative assessment Small group guided practice will guide the teacher
objective when to move students to independent practice. Students can move at their
own pace. The formative assessment will allow the teacher to plan and adjust
for future lessons with subtracting two-digit numbers.

The added practice of writing the equations building an understanding when
subtracting the greater number is on the top.
Differentiation
Planned Support /Extension/ Differentiation for Specific Students:
Speech/Hearing Language Impaired - Use voice amplification system during whole group and transitions
to give students with hearing impairment the best opportunity to hear all the instruction. Use of small
group instruction allows students the best opportunities to understand a concept. Special consideration
for seating to allow students optimal view/hearing of added support of visuals. Repeat directions, model,
and use established routines allowing students to anticipate learning opportunities with success. Visuals
on the smartboard help students see what is being talked about.
ADHD/Learning disabled/IEPs Focus prompts, redirection, check for understanding, special seating
arrangement help the students be successful. Behavior interventions are in place, including planned
ignoring and take a break. Verbalizing the expectations and reviewing the expectation of activities help the
students learning be meaningful and successful. Projecting a visual on the smartboard and the use of
probing questions keeps students mind stay busy and focused. Wobble chairs help to keep students
focused and on task burning energy as they are learning. Writing skills are difficult so formative
assessment or discussion are used to verbalize problem solving.
Health impairments Established understand when students use the sign language visual for bathroom
from across the room they may leave as needed.
Gifted and Talented - Offer enrichment activities, extensions or opportunities to explain their processing.
Problem of the day activates the deeper thinking strategies and students must explain their process.
Opportunities for strategy games keeps the mind busy and active. Changing the numbers on curriculum
math magazine to larger numbers helps to challenge students beyond the lesson of the day. When
finished early students, create problems on the back of worksheets or play strategy games.
