WISE NL Student Summer Employment Program (SSEP) application


WHAT is WISE SSEP?
WISE SSEP offers young women of Newfoundland and Labrador the opportunity for paid work
placements with award winning researchers and scientists. Students can experience first-hand
careers in science and engineering that are exciting, rewarding, and accessible. In addition to
work experience WISE SSEP provides students with weekly workplace tours, professional
development, networking opportunities and social activities.

WHO can apply for WISE SSEP?


Female high school students, who are currently in Grade 11 (Level II), and will be returning to high
school in September.
NOTE: Grade 10 (Level I) students in Labrador may also apply for positions based in Labrador.

WHEN is WISE SSEP & how much will a WISE SSEP position pay?
WISE SSEP is a 7 week placement from July 3- August 18, 2017. Participants will work for 35 hours
per week and be paid minimum wage.

STUDENT PLACEMENT DESCRIPTIONS 2017


The following is a list of the possible placements that are available for the 2017 program.
Please read each description carefully to determine if the work involved is something that
you would be interested in doing for seven weeks. Primary supervisor names are in parentheses
after the job title.
Note that the Student is responsible for Transportation to and from the workplace location each
day. For positions at the OSC there is a shuttle available from MUN (St. Johns campus).

AVALON PENINSULA
Note: The following placements are in St. Johns and surrounding areas.

1. NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL INSTITUTE FOR OCEAN TECHNOLOGY (1)


Research Assistant (Allison Kennedy): The student will support research staff at
the National Research Council of Canada's (NRC) Ocean, Coastal and River
Engineering (OCRE) Portfolio, conduct research relating to vessel operations and
marine safety. This will involve support with conducting physical model testing in
NRC's ice tank, assistance with data analysis and summarizing findings in a report.

2. FACULTY OF ENGINEERING AND APPLIED SCIENCE (MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY)

Lab Research Assistant (Dr. Lesley James): Provide support to the research
engineers, other EOR project staff, and graduate students.
Digital Prototyping Assistant (2) (Andy Fisher): The Digital Prototyping
Assistant(s) will work with the DDPL coordinator to support our new digital

prototyping initiative. Students will need to become familiar with the CAD software
and the prototyping hardware (e.g. 3D printers, laser cutters, etc) in the lab. In
addition to supporting lab clients, the students will be expected to help to develop
new DDPL exercises and activities to support tours and youth outreach activities. An
interest in 3D printing, enthusiasm and good communication skills are required.
Lab Research Assistant (Dr. Kelly Hawboldt):Biomass waste to bioproducts
Assisting graduate students in work on converting forestry and fishery residues to
biofuels and bioproducts

3. FACULTY OF MATHEMATICS & STATISTICS (MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY) (1)


WebWork Problem Set Author (Tara Stuckless & Dr. Danny Dyer): The student will
author problem sets in algebra and trigonometry, and code the problems in a parametric
fashion for the open source WebWork online homework system.

4. FACULTY OF SCIENCE (MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY) (8)


DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGY
Molecular Cell Biology and Developmental Genetics Laboratory Assistant (Dr.
Brian E. Staveley): The successful applicant will aid undergraduate and graduate
students in the daily operations of a molecular cell biology and developmental genetics
laboratory. Duties include: (1) Care and maintenance of Drosophila (common fruit fly)
cultures employed as models of human diseases (ie. Parkinsons, Huntingtons,
starvation/eating disorders and cancer) (2) General laboratory duties (3) Assisting in
carrying out biological, biochemical and behavioural experiments into the effects of altering
life and cell death in Drosophila melanogaster.
DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY
Chemistry Research Assistant (Chris Kozak): Green Chemistry and Catalysis Group
Research Assistant: The student will interact with the whole Green Chemistry and Catalysis
research group at MUN consisting of Dr. Kozak, Dr. Kerton and graduate and undergraduate
research assistants. Green Chemistry is the study of pollution prevention by using
sustainable, environmentally friendly chemical processes. The WISE student will help
conduct research in Catalysis (an important area of green chemistry) including synthesis of
new molecules, perform reactions (such as making biodegradable polymers), and collect
information from the internet for outreach (such as helping with projects aimed at public
understanding of science). Students will be expected to keep good laboratory notes and
participate in general laboratory maintenance (incl. updating the chemical inventory,
cleaning glassware, etc.). Information about our team and their research can be found on

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS AND PHYSICAL OCEANOGRAPHY


Student Research Assistant (2) - Laser Spectroscopy of Biological Materials
Systems (Dr. G. Todd Andrews): Assist with scientific literature reviews, sample
preparation, and/or apparatus design and construction.

DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY
Civic Laboratory for Environmental Action Research Assistant (2) (Dr. Max
Liboiron): Civic Laboratory for Environmental Action Research (CLEAR) is a marine science

laboratory that specializes in citizen science and environmental justice on marine plastic
pollution. Research Assistants (RAs) will work collaboratively with other lab members on a
variety of projects monitoring marine plastics, including gathering and dissecting fish for
ingestion studies, building and testing sampling instruments, collaboratively analyzing
samples, and co-writing reports. In addition to these activities, all lab members attend a
weekly lab meeting where we discuss how to best use research to make social and cultural
change.

DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY
Research Assistant (David Wilson): Our research focuses on animal behaviour, and, in
2017, will focus on three different projects involving birds. One project will focus on the
parental behaviour of puffins, another will focus on the effects of traffic noise on the
communication behaviour of dark-eyed juncos, and the last will focus on avian species at
risk in Labrador. This WISE position will involve analyzing audio recordings and other
remotely sensed data (e.g., GPS tags and RFID technology) that are collected in the context
of these three projects. The student will learn basic bio acoustical techniques, as well as
methods for identifying and localizing individual birds in the wild. Most of the research will
be conducted in our laboratory on the St. John's campus, but there will be some opportunity
for field work in the St. John's area if the student is interested.
DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY
Research Assistant in Boreal Biogeochemistry and Climate Change (Susan
Ziegler): Assisting researchers in the laboratory and if possible the field with sample
collection, preparation and chemical analyses. These efforts will be part of a research
program aimed at understanding how boreal forest landscapes respond to climate change
and how those responses may contribute to feedbacks on climate.

5. THE MUN BOTANICAL GARDEN


Nursery Research Student Assistant (Tim Walsh & Todd Boland): The WISE student
will assist the nursery and research staff with the care and maintenance of our ex situ
native plant collections and assisting with any research projects active during the summer
months. The day to day duties will be transplanting, repotting, weeding, watering and data
collection of plants in the nursery area.

6. THE OCEAN SCIENCES CENTRE (OSC), LOGY BAY (6)


NOTE: There is a shuttle bus service available to transport students from MUN St. Johns
Campus to the OSC
Marine Education Interpreter and Outreach Assistant (2) (Danielle Nichols):
Student will work with undergraduate students to deliver education programs to visitors
and the public at the Ocean Sciences Centre and other venues. The student will be
responsible for the outdoor touch tank (including animal husbandry), working with and
informing visitors about the resident seal population and informing visitors about the
aquatic animals on display and on-going research at the facility. Student will also assist with
an outreach initiatives.

Marine Macrobiology Research Assistant, (Javier Santander): Marine Microbiology

related duties. Bacteriophage isolation, DNA and RNA isolation, bacteriology type of work.

Seal Research Assistant (2) (Kiersten Cormier): Students will assist with seal care,
including husbandry, food preparation, feeding, and maintenance of the seals and their
facility. Daily activities include assisting with training the harp seals for husbandry activities
(moving on demand, physicals) and Match to Sample behavioural research.

Ocean Sciences Centre Laboratory Research Assistant (Patrick Gagnon): To assist


research on native and invasive marine invertebrate and seaweed species. Responsibilities
will include, but not be limited to: 1) stereoscopic and microscopic analysis of biological
tissues, 2) identification, counting, and weighing of organisms, 3) quantification of animal
behaviour, and 4) analysis of seabed imagery acquired by divers. This work will be
conducted in a laboratory setting. If interested, the student will be offered opportunities to
assist with frequent field work on board a research vessel.

7. THE MARINE INSTITUTE (1)


Research/Ocean Outreach Assistant (Susan Fudge): Position will work between
several centres/departments within the Marine Institute that are related to fisheries
research and youth engagement in ocean sciences. Assisting in the regular activities in the
CFER (Centre for Fisheries Ecosystem Research) lab and potentially in the field. This would
include working with project lead on current green crab project in the field and in the lab,
such as dissections; fish stomach analysis; plankton analysis; larval fish and cod egg
extraction, and possibly data entry. The student will also be assisting with rainbow trout
and salmon daily husbandry (feeding, grading, tank maintenance) in the Aquaculture
Facility at the Marine Institute (includes adult and larval fish). Duties will include weighing
and measuring salmonids, water quality for water systems, maintaining an aquaponics
system, and assisting with any other project work that may be taking place at the facility or
in the field
8. PETROFORMA (1)
Laboratory Assistant (Amanda Woodrow): Toxicology and microbiology Laboratory
assistant.

9. THE FLUVARIUM (1)


Freshwater Ecology and Environmental Interpreter (Robert Piercy): As a Freshwater
Ecology and Environmental Interpreter, the students duties will include exhibit
interpretation, maintenance and care of live animal exhibits, outdoor and indoor guided
tours, fish and frog talks.
10. THE JOHNSON GEOCENTRE (2)
Assistant camp coordinator / Science Interpreter (2) (Andrea van Nostrand): As a
Summer Science Interpreter, the student will learn about various Earth Science topics
presented within the Johnson GEO CENTRE exhibit galleries, and play a vital role in helping
us provide meaningful learning experiences for the public. Interpreter duties include
presentation of daily programs to visitors of all ages, interacting with the public, answering
questions, researching answers, and possibly conducting science demonstrations.
Depending on their interests and abilities, the student may also have an opportunity to

assist in our summer camps.

11. THE MANUELS RIVER EXPERIENCE (Conception Bay South) (2)


Summer Science Interpreter (2) (Michael Mooney): Manuels River Hibernia
Interpretation Centre (MRHIC) is a not-for-profit science and nature centre which features
the geological, biological, and human history of Manuels River and the surrounding region
of Conception Bay South. We are committed to preserving and interpreting the natural,
cultural, and geological history of the river. We achieve this by developing education and
recreation programs for all ages, and conserving the river system and its 6km of riverside
trails. If you are a dynamic individual who enjoys interacting with the public and learning
through fun, then the Manuels River experience has opportunities that are right for you!
The Manuels River Hibernia Interpretation Centre provides educational programming to
adults, youth, young children and seniors, as well as visitor from all over the world. We also
host a Visitor Information Centre (VIC) at our front desk. The WISE Summer Science
Interpreters will support the education department with visitor and program interpretation.
The WISE students will interact with visitors to the Centre and will assist with guided exhibit
tours, guided hikes and other indoor and outdoor events and activities along the river.

12. PETTY HARBOUR MINI AQUARIUM (Petty Harbour) (2)


Science Educator/Aquarist (2) (Meredith Scofield): Aquarist duties involve taking care
of the animals - feeding, cleaning exhibits and water quality monitoring. You will be
responsible for upholding our high level of interpretive programming and one-on-one guest
interactions (from exhibit tours & touch tank programs to puppet shows & story time),
maintaining the appearance and cleanliness of our exhibits and assisting with animal care.

CENTRAL NEWFOUNDLAND
*Placements involve a 7-week (paid) job along with a 1 week (fully funded) visit to St.
Johns to participate in Final Week program activities. The selected student should be
willing to travel and must possess valid identification for travel.

13. FACULTY OF ENGINEERING AND APPLIED SCIENCE (Moretons Harbour)

Community Liaison, Lab Assistant and Research Assistant (2) (Dr. Cynthia Coles):
Consulting with residents, surveying residents for their views, collecting water samples,
arranging to have water samples sent to St. John's for analysis, assisting with literature
searches (if the students can have access to Memorial University Databases), gathering on-
site information, and maintaining email contact with the Supervisor and Ph.D. student in St.
John's. A local contact in Moreton's Harbour that they may also consult with is Dr. Daniel
Hewitt.

BONAVISTA PENINSULA
15. DEPARTMENT OF OCEAN SCIENCES (Champney's West, Trinity Bay) (2)
Aquarium Attendant (2) (Dr. William Driedzic): Interpretation of aquarium displays,
care and maintenance of marine animals.

1. GRENFELL CAMPUS (Corner Brook) (7)


Observatory and Laboratory Assistant (2) (Dr. Svetlana Barkanova): The student
will be assisting in modifying and upgrading various physics laboratory and observatory
equipment, and helping with organizing public outreach for the Grenfell Observatory.

Mathematics Research Assistant (2) (Rebecca Milley): The Mathematics Research


Assistant will learn about mathematical game theory, which deals with "pure strategy"
games (like checkers and tic-tac-toe). Game theory asks questions like "Who wins?", "How
do they win?", and "What mathematics is underlying the game?" The research assistant will
be given her own game to analyze (and play!), which may involve original research that
contributes to a larger, publishable research project.

Summer Programs Assistant/Camp Leader (Charlene Connors): We are accepting


applications for the position of camp leader. The successful candidate will assist the
supervisor with the activities for science activity camps at Grenfell Campus. The camp
leader will assist with the organization and development of camps, day to day operations,
and program evaluation.

Research Assistant (2) (Dr. Julie Sircom) We will work in The Bee Lab and study both
native bees (like bumble bees) and honey bees. Projects include tracking flower blooming
times and observing bees as they forage on different flower types, collecting nectar and
pollen for nutritional analysis, preparing microscope slides of different pollen types and
taking photographs of them using a microscope, tracking weight gain of a honey bee hive
over time, collecting bees using traps and nets, pinning and identifying bees, and lots of
other stuff like data entry and preparing field equipment.

2. BONNE BAY MARINE STATION (1)


Marine Interpretation Assistant (Allison Eaton): The Bonne Bay Marine Station is a
marine education and research facility located in the scenic community of Norris Point, in
beautiful Gros Morne National Park (www.bonnebay.ca). Guided tours of our sea-life
aquarium attract over 10, 000 visitors each summer. Articulate students who enjoy working
with the public will be required to provide educational tours of our facility. Students will
participate as Marine Interpretation Assistants with our Public Education Program.

LABRADOR
1 LABRADOR GRENFELL HEALTH (1)
Occupational Therapist II Assistant (Heather Callahan) Labrador Grenfell Health will
offer a student support placement within the Rehabilitation Department. The job is to assist

Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Social Work and Speech Language Pathology with
administrative type duties and job shadowing opportunity. No patient handling is permitted.

2 NUNATUKAVUT (1)
Natural Resources Research Assistant (Trish Nash) The Natural Resources Assistant
will work with the Fish and Wildlife Coordinator, Guardians, Fishery Steward, and community
members on a number of conservation projects in the territory of the southern Inuit of
NunatuKavut. This will include monitoring Atlantic salmon, cod, and capelin populations;
collecting information on sea ducks and shorebirds; assessing the success of the Black
Tickle rainwater collection program; distributing communal fishing designations and catch
logs; and helping to initiate community-based sustainable development projects. The
student will work in the field, on the computer, use scientific monitoring equipment, and
communicate with the public and NunatuKavut Community Council staff.
