Definition: a self- authored story of a persons
life. It is an account of ones life written or
recorded in some way by that person.
An autobiography (from the Greek,
-autos self + -bios life + - including the customs that come from your
graphein to write) is a written account of the life
of a person written by that person. In other
words, it is the story that a person wrote about
themselves.
ORIGIN OF THE TERM
The word "autobiography" was first used
deprecatingly by William Taylor in 1797 in
the English periodical the Monthly Review,
when he suggested the word as a hybrid, but
condemned it as "pedantic". However, its next
recorded use was in its present sense, by Robert
Southey in 1809. Nonetheless, autobiography as
a form goes back to Antiquity. Biographers
generally rely on a wide variety of documents
and viewpoints, whereas autobiography may be
based entirely on the writer's memory. Closely
associated with autobiography (and sometimes
hard to distinguish from it) is the memoir form.

Your Family Background
Just like the biography of a famous
person, your biography will include things like
the time and place of your birth, an overview of
your personality, your likes and dislikes, and the

interesting childhood in the world; but then
again, you may have had an experience that was

Your culture is the overall way of life,
family's values and beliefs. Culture includes the
holidays you observe, the customs you practice,

As you write your autobiography, think
about the ways that your family celebrated or
observed certain days (birthdays), events
(harvests), and months (December), and tell
your audience about special moments.
Stages of your Life
The best way to write an autobiography
is to treat your life as an interesting story.
Starting from birth, enhance the storys appeal
as you take the reader or listener through the
different stages of your life.
The Theme
The theme of your life is to be defined
before the story is written. Your goal and your
ultimate achievement of that goal can be the
theme. You should also remember to include
something that takes the focus from the past
and present, and puts it on the future. A
particular event that had a huge impact on your
life can be your theme. Find and mark that one
day and or one event that twisted your life out
of shape and made you think about your future.
The Conclusion
 Conclude the autobiography with an
experience gained, a lesson learned and a
resolution you decided to take after that.
Explain to the reader how that resolution set the
tone for whatever you achieved in your life
from that point forward. This classic format
uses the hero theme that is endearing to most
people. Everyone loves an underdog who was
given lemons and ended up making lemonade!
5 BASIC RULES FOR AUTOBIOGRAPHY
WRITING SUCCESS!
1. Be honest. This is partly so that when you
write your manuscript, you won't have any
trouble properly documenting even the smallest
details, as you might if you just embellish parts
of your story. Don't always cast yourself in a
positive light. You can have weaknesses and still
be the protagonist. Reveal mistakes you've made
and times when you've failed yourself and other
people.
2. Pull out the best stories. The story of your
entire life would start to get pretty long-winded,
so you'll have to make some decisions about
what anecdotes you're going to include. Begin
drafting your manuscript by writing out the main
stories that will be woven together to create a
picture of your life. There are a few main topics
that most autobiographies cover since readers
find them fascinating
3. Write in your own voice. People read
autobiographies to gain insight on what its like
to be someone else. Being authentically you is a
sure way to keep people engaged. If your
writing is formal and stiff, or if it reads like a
college essay instead of an expose on your life,
people will have trouble getting through the
book.
4. Be revealing. You don't have to be explicit,
but it's important to reveal truths about yourself
and your life in an autobiography. Don't let the
book become a list of your accomplishments,
with all the negative material carefully kept
under the rug. Present yourself as a whole
person, sharing talents and flaws alike, and your
readers will be able to identify with you and
hopefully root for you as they make their way
through your story.

a subject's experience of these life events.

biography presents a subject's life story,
highlighting various aspects of his or her life,
including intimate details of experience, and
may include an analysis of the subject's
personality.

By the 18th century, literary biography
(works about poets and men of letters) had
become an important extension of the genre.
Once upon a time historical biographies were
written by men and were mostly about (Great)
men. Nevertheless, it seems that a growing
number of historical biographies are being
written by women. As more biographies come to
be written by (and often about) women, this
chimes with much else that has changed across
our culture in recent decades.
WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE
BIOGRAPHY?
There are certain situations in life where
youll be asked to write about people either
about yourself or someone else and knowing
what information to include in a biography can
be a helpful first step. Sometimes a persons life
is so full of rich details and interesting facts that
its difficult to know what to include and what to
leave out; but, there are some guidelines to
follow that will help you write a biography.
First of all, consider the length of the
biography this will help determine how much,
or how little, information you should include,
and how in-depth that information should be.
For example, a simple paragraph will contain
much more general, basic facts than a biography
thats several pages long.
For a basic paragraph, your biography
should probably include facts like:
Date and place of birth (and death, if
applicable)
Major achievements
Education
Work facts
 An overview of what makes the person
significant

What is included in a biography will

become more complex as the biography gets
longer: the more words you have to use, the
more facts you can consider for inclusion. A
biography thats several pages long will
probably go into more detail about the persons
history and what events throughout life made
them who they were.

Consider the Audience for the Biography

The key to writing a great biography is

really found within this idea: choose facts that
are both relevant and interesting to your
audience. In order to do this, you should
consider why the biography is needed, and who
will be reading it, and then focus on those areas
of the persons life that the audience will likely
