15 A 65.0 kg man stands in a lift.


(a) Find the weight of the man.
(b) If the lift begins to move upwards with an acceleration of 3.00 ms -2 , find the
reaction on the man from the floor of the lift.
(c) What will be the reaction on the man when the lift has reached its constant cruising speed of
8.0 m s-1?
(d) Before it arrives at the top floor the lift begins to decelerate at 2.0 m s -2. What is the reaction
on the man during this deceleration?

16 A rocket has a mass of 10 kg and on firing the thrust is 400 N. What is the initial acceleration?
(Assume the rocket is being fired vertically). Think twice!

17 A lift of mass 1600 kg accelerates upwards from rest at 0.40 m s-2 for a few seconds, and then
continues upwards at a constant speed of 2.0 m s-1. Calculate
(a) for how many seconds the lift accelerates,
(b) the tension in the lift cable when the lift is at rest,
(c) the unbalanced force on the lift while it is accelerating,
(d) the unbalanced force on the lift while it is going upwards at a steady 2.0 m s -1,
(e) the tension in the cable while the lift is accelerating.
