A bribe is a payment given personally to a government official in exchange of his use of
official power . Bribery requires two participants :one to give bribe ,and one to take it. Either
may initiate the corrupt offering ,for example a custom official may demand bribes let through
allowed goods ,or a smuggler might offer bribe to gain passage . In some countries, the
culture of corruption extends to every aspect of public life , making it difficult to individuals to
stay in business without resorting to bribes.
In recent years ,efforts have been made by the international community to encourage
countries to incriminate bribery. The reason for this is to make the early steps of a corrupt
deal already an offence and, thus, to give a clear signal that bribery is not acceptable.

Working children lives are difficult not just because of their work. Their families are
poor or they have no families and no resources. Because they have no education, they are
condemned to be poor all their lives.
The British charity Save the Children says that it is important to talk to child labourers
to find solutions. Not all work is bad or dangerous. In some cases, if children cant work, they
or their families cant survive. Boycotts of products made using child labour result in the
children being forced to do more dangerous work. Save the Children supports projects that
give young workers access to education and better working conditions.
Embroiderers like Nancy can go to classes organized by Save the Children. The
charity also helps them get reasonable pay for their work. Nancy says, Now we know that
our products sell very well in Europe. Before, I didnt know how much money I received. It was
written down. I couldnt read it. I used to think it was a good idea to ban products made by
children. But I live in the practical world, and Im very concerned about my family. For large
families, its very important for at least one or two children to work. If we don work, our
families wont survive.

While bribery includes an intent to influence or be influenced by another for personal gain,
which is often difficult to prove, graft only requires that the official gains something of value,
not part of his official pay, when doing his work. Large "gifts" qualify as graft, and most
countries have laws against it. (For example, any gift over $200 value made to the President
of the United States is considered to be a gift to the Office of the Presidency and not to the
President himself. The outgoing President must buy it if he wants to take it with him.) Another
example of graft is a politician using his knowledge of zoning to purchase land which he
knows is planned for development, before this is publicly known, and then selling it at a
significant profit. This is comparable to insider trading in business.

Money laundering is the process of creating the appearance that large amounts of
money obtained from serious crimes, such as drug trafficking or terrorist activity, originated
from legitimate source. It is a crime with varying definitions. It is a key operation of the
underground economy.
In US law, it is the practice of engaging in financial transactions to conceal the identity,
source, or destination of illegally gained money. In UK law, the common law definition is wider.
The act is defined as taking any action with property of any form that will disguise the fact
that it is the proceeds of a crime, or obscure the beneficial ownership of said property.
In the past, the term money laundering was applied only to financial transactions
related to organized crime. Today its definition is often expanded by government and
international regulators such as the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to mean any
financial transaction which generates a value as the result of an illegal act, which may
involve actions such as tax evasion or false accounting. In the UK, it does not even need to
involve money, but any economic good. Courts involve money laundering committed by
private individuals, drug dealers, businesses, corrupt officials, members of criminal
organizations such as the Mafia, and even states.
As financial crime has become more complex, and Financial Intelligence (FININT) has
become more recognized in combating international crime and terrorism, money laundering
has become more prominent in political, economic, and legal debate. Money laundering is
illegal; the acts generating the money almost always are themselves criminal in some way
(for if not, the money would not need to be laundered).

A counterfeit drug or a counterfeit medicine is a medication which is produced and sold
with the intent to deceptively represent its origin or effectiveness. The common street word
for counterfeit drug is bead bag. Such a product may not contain a sufficient amount of
active ingredients or contains entirely incorrect ones.
People who apply a counterfeit medication may experience a number of dangerous
consequences to their health, such as unexpected side effects, allergic reactions or a
worsening of their condition. Many counterfeits contain inert substances which do not provide
the patient any treatment benefits. On the contrary, they may be hazardous.
It is estimated that upward of 10% of drugs worldwide are counterfeit, and in some
countries more than 50% of the drug supply is made up of counterfeit drugs. Furthermore, the
World Health Organization estimates that the annual earnings of counterfeit drugs are over
$32 billion.
There are several technologies to help combating this problem, such as radio frequency
identification which uses electronic devices to identify pharmaceutical products. A new
technique, Raman spectroscopy can be used to discover counterfeit drugs while they are still
in their packaging.
According to the latest researches, India stands as the first country in fake drug
manufacture. 75% of counterfeit medicines in the world have their origins in India, followed by
07 % from Egypt and 06 % from China. In the case if India, it is against the law to make drugs
for domestic use, and it is not against the law to make them for export.

As the Greek historian Herodotus once said Egypt is the gift of the Nile, the Nile River was
the ancient Egyptians best friend even though it did flood every year. In the fall, the great river
would overflow its banks. At first the Egyptians lost their crops, their houses and, in some cases,
their lives. However, the Egyptian people noticed after a time that the floods came about the same
time every year, in June. Therefore, they planned: they would make sure nothing important was
on the banks of the river when it was time for the flood.

Then after the water level went back down, they would quickly plant new crops. The floods
brought good fresh soil up onto the land .This soil was ideal for planting grains.

The river also gave them the chance to fish. The Egyptians would build boats out of the wood
and sail up and down the river. They would use spears and nets to catch fish as well as birds that
flew close to the surface of the water.

The Nile also provided protection from attack. People wanting to invade Egypt would have
first to cross the river, which was very wide in places. The Egyptians could stand on their own side
of the river and throw spears at their attackers. Any attacker who did cross the river was likely to
be tired from making the crossing.

Another important way that the Nile helped the ancient Egyptians was in trade. Goods went
to and from Egypt down an up the Nile, which had its mouth at the Mediterranean Sea.

The Indus Civilization is among the world's earliest civilizations, contemporary to the
Bronze Age civilizations of Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt. It peaked around 2500 BC in

The Indus civilization is still poorly understood. Its very existence was forgotten until

Numidia (202 BC - 25 BC) was an ancient Berber kingdom in North Africa and is
no longer in existence today. It was located on the eastern border of modern day
Algeria, bordered by the Roman province of Mauritania (western border of modern
Algeria) to the west, the Roman province of Africa (modern day Tunisia) to the east ,
the Mediterranean sea to the North and the Sahara Desert to the south. Its earliest
inhabitants, the Numidians were divided into tribes and clans, and were racially
indistinguishable from the other Berber inhabitants of early North Africa. From the 6th
century BC, points along the coast were occupied by the Carthaginians, who by the
3rd century BC had expanded into the interior as far as Thevesta (Tbessa).
The name of Numidia was first applied by Polybius and other historians during
the 3rd century BC to indicate the territory west of Carthage, including the Entire
Maghreb as far as the river Mulucha (Muluya), about 100 miles west of Oran. The
Numidians were conceived of as two great tribal groups: the Massyli in eastern
Numidia, and the Massaesyli in the west. The Numidians were semi-nomadic Berber
tribes who lived in Numidia, in Algeria, east of Constantine and in part of Tunisia and
Morocco. The Numidians were one of the earliest natives to trade with the settlers of
Carthage.
The inhabitants remained semi-nomadic until the reign of Massinissa, the chief of
the Massyli tribe living near Cirta (Constantine). During the second Punic War he was
initially an ally of Carthage, but he went over to the Roman side in 206 BC and was
given further territory extending as far as the Mulucha River. For nearly 50 years
Massinissa retained the support of Rome as he tried to turn the Numidian pastoralists
into peasant farmers. He also seized much Carthaginian territory and probably hoped
to rule all North Africa.

The battle of Granada was a siege of the city of Granada fought over a period of
months leading up to its surrender on January 2nd, 1492. The city was captured by the
combined forces of Aragon and Castile (recently united as Spain) from the armies of
the taifa Muslim kingdom of Granada. Granadas forces were led by Sultan Boabdil.
This relatively small campaign was of momentous consequences as Granada was the
last outpost of the Moorish rule in Spain and its fall brought to an end 780 years of
Muslim control in the Spanish peninsula.
Granada contains the beautiful Alhambra palace, a gem of Islamic architecture,
the loss of which is mourned in the Muslim world. The fall of Granada marked the final
act in the Reconquista, the campaign by the medieval Christian states of Spain to
drive out the Moors. It was followed by the expulsion of the Jews and Muslims from
Spain, although some remained by converting to Christianity. Among these some
remained secretly Muslim or Jewish (known as Moriscos and Morranos). Many,
however genuine their conversion, were subject to the suspicions and interrogations
of the Spanish Inquisition. In 1609, descendants of converts were also expelled.
A society that had often seen Muslims, Jews, and Christians interacting positively
had ended. The fall of Granada was a factor in the Spanish and Portuguese drive to
acquire overseas colonies, influencing their attitude of superiority towards the cultures
and religions they encountered in the New World, for which Christopher Columbus set
sail later in the year of Granadas defeat. Rediscovery of the richness and positive
cultural exchange of the Moorish Spain before 1492, known in Spanish as convivencia,
may provide clues on how contemporary multi-cultural societies can deal with the
challenges of pluralism and of peaceful co-existence.

A/ Comprehension (08pts)

Read the text below carefully then do the activities that follow.

For example, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, teenagers from poor families receive
some money to start businesses. They can buy products to sell at the market and make some
money. Because they are the bosses, they can choose when to work and they have money to
pay for school.
Embroiderers like Nancy can go to classes organized by Save the Children. The charity
also helps them get reasonable pay for their work. Nancy says, Now we know that our
products sell very well in Europe. Before, I didnt know how much money I received. It was
written down. I couldnt read it. I used to think it was a good idea to ban products made by
children. But I live in the practical world, and Im very concerned about my family. For large
families, its very important for at least one or two children to work. If we don work, our
families wont survive.
