Second Grade Reading/Writing Lesson/Activity

Review- Review recently studied words.

Anticipatory Set- Present the vocabulary words we will be learning, their definitions and
read a related book. In the presentation of the vocab, I will not only say and define the
words, but provide a visual representation of the word. We will also discuss the book.

Objective- Using word wall with sticky notes, students will be able to group ALL
vocabulary words on the word wall into category groups. (Based on subject we are
studying, ex: For matter, solid, liquid, and gas as categories; water, rock, smoke as
words)

Instruction- Will introduce vocabulary words and their definitions. Before activity I will
explain and model the process of categorizing words. I will have students make cards
with a vocabulary word, its definition, an opposite, and a drawing of the word. I will then
ask students to write a word on a sticky note and categorize words by similarities on the
word wall.(Ex: water, lava, milk are all liquids thus would be grouped together)

Checking for understanding- As I use simple concepts in my modeling at the beginning

of the lesson, I will ask students to thumbs up or thumbs down if I have grouped words
correctly based on similarities or things they have in common and ask students to
explain why they think I grouped correctly or incorrectly. After the activity I will ask the
classroom to rate each other's work in the same manner.

Independent practice- I will then have students create their own categorization groups
on a piece of paper using the word wall and vocabulary words we have learned.
Students will write what categories they grouped the words by.
