I believe that the World Language students here in PSD benefit from the learning opportunities
created by their WL teachers. When units and daily lessons are planned, WL teachers draw upon
the 5Cs of language learning, namely: Communication, Culture, Connections, Comparisons, and
Communities. The goal is to prepare our students to be global citizens because the world in
which we live is constantly changing, especially through technology. As a French teacher, I must
facilitate the broader thinking of my students by looking to other cultures and countries
(authentic materials, videos, books, articles, products, etc.) to assist in the acquisition of the
French Language.
According to PSDs World Language scope and sequence (taken from the Colorado Academic
World Language Standards), students in French level 3 are Novice High which means that my
students are able to use interpretive, interpersonal and presentational modes in French to
participate, comprehend and present French topics using high frequency vocabulary, and in our
case, new complex grammatical structures. Perhaps the most important goal for this Unit is to
engage students in the practices and perspectives of the French culture through the creation and
comparison of a French Cover Letter and CV with their own from Advisory. My hope is that
students will be able to acquire this new information as I provide authentic resources (2
templates for a French CV and the structure and formation of a French Cover Letter) and connect
to our own FRHS Business departments content as we look at resumes that students have
written in those classes. It is going to be heavy in new material and perhaps not something they,
as 15 year olds, can or want to relate to just yet in their young lives, but it is important for them
to be prepared to go out into the francophone world after high school or university, and be able to
effectively interview for a job, write a CV, a cover letter, and speak about their futures.
During the course of this unit, students will be assessed with a variety of formative tests
including designing a poster about their future profession and writing 3 sentences about it, doing
warm-ups in class following the previous lesson to check for understanding, exit tickets using Si
clauses and the conditional, taking on the role of the employer and analyzing 3 French CVs
for a job and choosing the best candidate and justifying the choice, writing a personal CV and
cover letter either for themselves or a parent, and listening to a job interview in French and
answering questions. The pretests include a listening and speaking interview, a cover letter and a
resume. The summative assessments in early-mid April will be all 4 of the pre-tests. I am
discouraged by all of the pre-testing and post-testing during this time of year when the students
have a myriad of standardized tests (2 weeks at FRHS) as well as the PSAT and the SAT during
the course of our Unit. However, I know that this is important to show growth and I am
convinced that learning the new complex grammatical structures and vocabulary in this Unit 5
will support students even with their own English resumes and cover letters as they begin to start
I will create a Google Classroom specifically for this Unit where students will be able to
access information and also submit their work. All of the pre-post tests will be in GC.
2. Questions: What profession will I have in the future? Why is it important to know how to
write a resume (CV) and a cover letter? Can I compare and contrast French business CVs
and Cover Letters with my own? Can I evaluate and recognize the cultural aspects of
these differences?
3. Assessments: pretests, creating a poster, evaluating and analyzing French cover letters,
CVs and comparing them to the FRHS business class resumes and those that they made
and growth by taking the post-tests. We will have warm-ups and exit tickets/formative
assessments daily.
4. Goals and Learning Targets : I can talk about my future job in French. I can write a CV
and a LdM in French. I will successfully achieve growth between the pre and the post
tests.
a. Contexts: Au Bureau/Professions
b. Structures: Si Clauses + Conditional, Si Clauses, Que/Qui, Quand FF
c. Francophone Culture: Roman Photo, CVs and Cover Letters in French, French

e. Accomodations: JG as needed I will print off hard copies of all our materials. She will
budget freeze for making copies in our building so this entire unit will be paperless.)
