Persuasive Speech: Audience Assessment

Specific Goal: My audience will want to get organized with something in their life,
whether it be school, their house, car, and etc.

Type of Claim: This is a claim of Value

Ethos: Primary Ethos:


a) Competence: I have been organized ever since I was little and have been able to read,
The art of tidying up
b) Fairness: Talking about how I have lived with 3 sisters and a dad who werent so fond of
being clean or tidy.

Secondary Ethos: How many authoritative references will you cite out loud in your
speech? FIVE

Audience Assessment: Most of my audience members will probably have an attitude


toward my proposition that is either neutral or undecided.

Adaptation to Audience Attitude:


1. Common ground: We all probably have something in our life that could use a little bit of
organization
2. Latitude of acceptance: I think they will want to accept it because one of my biggest
reasons will be that it reduces stress, and what college student doesnt want to be stressed.

Baby Steps: I will encourage them to pick one thing in their life like their bathroom, car,
bedroom, backpack, fridge, school, and try to get that organized.

Persuasive Speech: Full Sentence Outline
Why being Organized is a good thing

Introduction

I. Hook: Have you ever walked into your bedroom, gotten into your car, looked in your
backpack and it was so messy you didnt even know where to start?!
II. Ethos: Well today I am going to talk about why you should be organized and the benefits
of it. I have been neat freak/ organizational connoisseur ever since I was little. Where it has
almost driven my parents crazy.

III. Proposition (or Hint at Proposition): I want to encourage you all to get organized
and how being organized can benefit you in your life.

IV. Preview:
1. We are all unorganized in some way (problem)
2. How to get organized (solution)
3. Benefits of organizing (Extra)

Transition: So, where do we even begin with organizing if we have so much to do?

Body

I. We are all unorganized in some way in our life.


A. The issue at hand is that in some part of our life we are disorganized. Whether
that be your car, your bedroom, your house, closet, backpack.. We can pretty
much think of everything in our life and in some way there is disorganization.
i. Taken from the US news and world report, Average
Americans spend one year of their life looking for lost or
misplaced items.
B. We are wasting our time.
i. Think of what you could do with that year, better yet. Think of the time
day to day.

Transition: So Let's get organized!

II. Where you can start and how you can begin to organize.
A. Taken from Marie Kondos book, The life-changing magic of tidying up she
states, First, put your hands on everything you own, ask yourself if it
spark joy, and if it doesnt thank it for its service and get rid of it.
i. Im sure we each have those many boxes under our beds full of memories,
closets full of clothes that we dont even use, and if it doesnt bring us joy,
then get rid of it.

ii. This might be awkward but it really allows us to focus on what we need
versus what we want.

B. Julie Morgenstern who is an organizing expert had an article written about her
in the NY times, she goes through tips and one of the biggest ones is, Pick
one or two of the smallest areas you spend the most time in and tackle
those first
i. Meaning, where do we spend our time, and what would
we like to see more of. This way we are more likely to get stressed out with
everything we like to do and focus on the small things.

ii. This also allows us to begin to put them in categories


instead of just house, we think.. Okay, study room, fridge, backpack and
so on.

Transition: We now have a little bit of an idea of where to start, let's talk about the benefits
or organizing and what it does for a person.

III. What are the benefits of being an organized person?


A. The Journal of Neuroscience reported that, looking at too many things at
once overloads your visual cortex and interferes with your brain's
ability to process information
i. If we are surrounded by so many things on the floor, or
around us we are more likely to get overwhelmed.
ii. Which in turn then makes it hard for us to focus

B. The National Sleep Foundation did a study and found that, People who make
their beds every morning are 19 percent more likely to report regularly
getting a goods nights rest, 75 percent of people said they got a
better night's sleep when their sheets were clean
i. Going along with this, it's important to stay organized in your bedroom and
dont bring your mess into you room.

C. Taken from Shape Magazine, Perception creates stress; changing


perception reduces it
i. Less mess EQUALS less stress.

[Transition to close: Finally, in closing let's remember that less mess equals less stress.
And a better us!

Conclusion:

1. Summarize main points/thesis: So I was able to tell you how we are all disorganized in
some way, tell you where to start, and the benefits of it.
2. Bookend: Who doesnt want their life to improve, by simply cleaning up and putting things
where they need to be?
3. End the speech memorably: less mess is less stress. Let's get organized!
4. Challenge the audience to respond: My challenge is to pick one thing in your life that
you can start on now to organize and get that sorted, and if you feel inclined move to the
next.
