Collaborative Assignment
Web 2.0 Tools to Support Collaborative learning

Name of the tool Google Docs
Where to access https://docs.google.com/
this tool (web
address)
Brief instructions Students will need to have access to a computer, cell phone, or tablet in
of how to use the order to use this site. It is user friendly but does require technology use.
tool All ODU students should have a google email account. Once logged in to
the account, there is an icon in the upper right hand corner that looks
like a grid. Once you click it, there is a drop down with an icon for Google
Docs. Click the Google Docs icon and then you will be able to choose if
you want to start from a blank document or a template. It is very easy
to navigate as is much like Word. You can then share the document to
others by clicking File in the upper left corner. Then click share.
Ideas for how the 1. Group Assignments: This tool would be great to use on group
tool can be used assignments. Students would be able to go on and do their section of
in PK-12 their work on their own time. It would make collaborating a lot more
time efficient and simple. Particularly students in 3rd through 12th grade
would use this tool for group assignments. Most of these students have
access and are efficient in the use of technology to complete work.
2. Study Groups: Students in grades 3 through 12 could also use this
tool for study groups. They could meet through Skype or Google
Hangouts and use Google Docs to each put in information to study with.
Collaboration is key here and this would be a great way of studying.
3. Parents/Student/Teachers Knowledge: Often times it is hard for
the teachers to keep in touch with the parents and students outside of
the classroom. All parents would have access to their students Gmail
account and can access the Google Docs. If the teacher needed parents
to sign up for a field trip or to bring food/supplies for a classroom party
this would allow the parents to go in and sign up. This makes it so much
simpler for both the parents and teachers. Also, once the students are
more responsible for their school and are more independent, they may
be the ones typing what they will bring on Google Docs.

The tool could also be used if students were in a study group and added
study tips and information to the google doc to share with the group.
Positives and Positives:
challenges of 1. Time Efficient: Students can access whenever and on their own time,
using the tool 2. Simple: Very straight forward and much like Microsoft Word. Students
should have experience with Word and if not, their parents most likely
do. All tools necessary are located in the toolbars at the top of the
document.
3. Organized: Google Docs is much like Microsoft Word. The Google
Doc will save onto the students Gmail and will always be there.
4. Updates/Saves Automatically: This is very beneficial because it
saves and updates after every edit. Many people lose their work
because of saving issues but this is less likely to happen because of the
automatic saves and updates.

Challenges:
1. Access: In order to use Google Docs the student must have a google
account.
2. Editing: Any student who has access to the document can edit the

work.
3. Credit for Work: Students must have a Key or color code for their
work to ensure the instructor knows who did what work. Without this,
the instructor will not be able to know whose work is whose and it may
get confusing.
