1/10/2017 Classroom Observations

I observed two different 4th grade classrooms. It was during their RTI
(Response to Intervention) time. In the first classroom students were logged
into Think Through Math program on laptops. One student I spoke to told me
she was working on math concepts to help her get stronger in her math
facts. In the second classroom, the teacher was using the overhead
projector to show students a step-by-step process in adding fractions with
base ten blocks. All the students were engaged in working in what they were
being shown. One student I spoke to showed me her journal and explained
how to solve the problem she was working on using the process her teacher
had modeled. I enjoyed watching the students learn and especially being
able to observe two different teaching styles where students in both classes
were engaged and learning. I believe this comes under standard 1
Instructional Leadership; (A) (i) Effective Instructional Leaders; (V) routinely
monitor and improve instruction by visiting classrooms, giving formative
feedback to teachers, and attending grade or team meetings. I could give
each teacher positive feedback based on my observations and through
talking to students.

January 23, 2017 Student Data for Extended Day

I worked with the 5th grade team and RTI facilitators to go over the
Curriculum Based Assessment data. We thoroughly combed through the
data to determine which students would benefit the most from afterschool
tutoring. Students needs in math and Reading were determined by the
scores they received in CBA 1and 2. It was difficult not being able place all
students in a tutoring group. Other factors that played a big part in
determining which students would receive afterschool tutoring was the
number of teachers that would be available to provide the tutoring and not
having too many students in each group as that would take away from the
effectiveness of the tutoring. I believe this comes under standard 1
Instructional Leadership; (A) (ii) data is used to determine instructional
decisions and monitor progress. Hard decisions were made, but all involved
agreed with the placements.

1/30/2017 TELPAS Data

I went through permanent records of our English Language Learners to verify

whether they were Parent Denials or students who we needed to gather
writing samples for TELPAS. It was rather disheartening to see how many
parents choose to deny Bilingual/ESL services to their children. We have
quite a few students in pre-k through 5th grades that our campus supports
through ESL services. I believe this comes under standard 1 Instructional
Leadership; (A) (ii) data is used to determine instructional decisions and
monitor progress. I had to separate the files of students who were on 1-2-
year monitor status from those that were still receiving full services as well
keeping a log of those students who were going to need writing samples for
the writing part of TELPAS.

February 14 and 15, 2017 Extended Day

For our Extended Day afterschool program, I direct students to the two
different areas they are grouped in depending on whether they are being
tutored for math or Reading. I pick up the snacks and pass them out to the
students while they are waiting to be picked up by their tutoring teachers. I
routinely check on the teachers providing the tutoring to make sure all is
going well and they have everything they need for their tutoring lessons.
After the tutoring hour is up, I wait with the students who are being picked up
to ensure all students have been picked up and that no one is left
unattended at the school. I believe this comes under standard 1
Instructional Leadership; (B)(iii) data-driven instruction and interventions.
The tutoring program is definitely an intervention for students to enhance
the possibility of them passing the STAAR test.

March 9, 2015 5th Grade Field Trip

I took on the responsibility of setting up the 5th grade field trip to Natural
Bridge Caverns. I contacted the reservation desk at Natural Bridge Caverns
and set up the date and time for the field trip with the number of students,
teachers and chaperones that would be attending. I also created the lesson
plan for the field trip that met the TEKS for 5th grade science. I also
coordinated the buses needed with our campus secretary to ensure there
was adequate funds in the budget for the trip. Funds are being collected
from parents and chaperones to cover the additional cost of the trip. I
believe this comes under standard 1 Instructional Leadership; (A)(i)(I)
prioritize instruction and student achievement by developing and sharing a
clear definition of high-quality instruction based on best practices from
research. Hands-on instruction and students being able to see and feel
things for themselves is definitely best practices.

March 28-29, 2017 STAAR Testing

Bins were set up for each teacher (grades 3-5) that had all their testing
materials (STAAR tests, answer documents, time sheets, cell phone
document, seating chart, quiet sign, break sign, administrator check-in
sheets, sharpened number 2 pencils, and any materials needed for student
accommodations). Teachers picked up their bins by 7:00 a.m. They
checked that they had all the materials they were supposed and signed for
their bins. Once all the bins were checked out, it was time for monitoring the
halls and making sure teachers were actively monitoring their students
during the test. After the test was completed, teachers returned their bins
and we went through and verified all materials were returned. Just walking
the halls, monitoring classes through the door windows, and relieving for
breaks made for extremely long and arduous two days.

Every couple of weeks a district staff member comes by and follows me
around as I deliver the snacks (chips and juice) as part of their audit check. I
was extremely elated to receive a compliment on how well our Extended Day
Tutoring program was run. The staff member stated I wish all campuses ran
their program the way you do. I routinely check on the teachers providing

Jan. 16-20, 2017 Cafeteria and After School Duty

Each morning I come into the cafeteria to ensure proper order is maintained
through interacting with students as they go through the food line, walking
between tables observing students to ensure students are behaving in the
manner expected by our school code of conduct, and making sure students
dont linger once they have completed their breakfast. I believe this comes

of leadership roles. Ensuring student discipline is well maintained in the
cafeteria environment is a leadership role.

February 20, 2017 Professional Development Scavenger Hunt

I helped to facilitate the PD Scavenger Hunt. I went from room to room

clarifying any questions team members had regarding the scavenger hunt.
The team members had to create a power point that showed how they
incorporated student group work in their curriculum, how they taught to the
various learning styles of their students and how they aligned their TEKS with
the grade above and below their own. There was some confusion on how to
access Lead4ward to view examples of power points that I helped clarify. I
checked to see if there were materials that anyone needed or any other
assistance I could provide. I believe this comes under standard 3 Executive
Leadership; (A) (i) Effective executive leaders; (I) are committed to ensuring
the success of the school. Since this was a professional development
mandated by the district office, making sure our campus did a good job was
very important and satisfying.

February 8, 2017 District Site-Based Committee

After the committee was welcomed by the superintendent and one of the
associate superintendents, the minutes from the previous month were
reviewed and approved. The associate superintendent presented
information on applying to become a District of Innovation for the primary
purpose of being able to apply for a waiver to begin the school year earlier
(2017-2018 school year is scheduled to begin August 28). Department
presentations were given by Special Education, CATE, and Talented and
Gifted representatives. It was noted that the next meeting would focus on
the 2nd and3rd goals of the improvement plan. This was a very informative
meeting. The new book adoption for algebra was also brought up and the
ethical practices and procedures involved in making sure teachers dont
speak to publishing representatives directly or accept anything from them so
that it doesnt appear as though youve been bribed to vote for their product.
I believe this comes under standard 3 Executive Leadership; (B) (iv) ethical
behavior. This hit home in following policies and procedures for my district.

4/12/2017 Shadowing Mentor

I had been thoroughly looking forward to this day. From deciding what to
wear (I wanted to look very professional and every bit the administrator), to
arriving extra early for work. My principal started the day debriefing with the
assistant principal then reviewed the calendar for the day. I was asked to
screen applicants for the ISS aide position. We walked the campus (just
looking into classes through the door window) going through each grade
level. We did stop at a kinder class to observe students going through the
writing process. A teachers 45 minute observation was scheduled and then
I got the big opportunity to handle a discipline issue. Two students were sent
to the office for hitting one another. I spoke to each student individually and
was able to get to the bottom of the situation. I even looked at the video
from the camera that was in place during the incident. The students were
spoken to, the issue addressed and they were both given lunch detention.
This was followed by a meeting with the district Truancy Officer which proved
to be very enlightening. Another walk through of the campus was
conducted, this time to check on the cleanliness of the campus and building
issues. Several items were made note of to be given to the head custodian
to address further. So much going on I almost missed lunch. At the end of
the day came dismissal which from outside appearances is organized chaos
with students led to buses, to the car pick up area, and out the front door for
those walking home on their own. I was told it was a pretty typical day. Very
tired, but I enjoyed every minute of this shadowing experience.
Standard Four

1/26/2017 Father/Son Game Night

Reflecting upon the last week I learned that a lot of time goes into the
planning of events. It requires time and consideration of many things in
particular, how to get parents more involved in their childrens learning as
positive role models in embracing positivity towards their education. Ive
been tasked to create a program that invites dads to become mentors and
parent volunteers on a regular basis so that their presence on campus shows
students that it isnt just their mothers who are involved in their education.
Ive come up with the Salinas Masterful Mentor program. I created a survey
asking dads, granddads, uncles, and other significant male role models if
they would be interested in the program and received positive results. The
surveys were handed out during the Father/Son Game Night on campus. I
believe this comes under Standard 4 School culture (A) Knowledge and
skills emphasizing (v) treat families as key partners to support student
learning, creating structures for two-way communication and regular updates
on student progress which allows regular opportunities to exist for both
families and the community to engage with the school and participate in
school functions.

February 9, 2017 Spa Night

This was a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Watching the mothers and

daughters give each other manicures and facials was a delight. The younger
girls were so precious in applying makeup on their moms. It was also
heartwarming to watch the older girls whose mothers dont always come to
school for parent conferences engage in such a fun way with their moms.
There were even a couple of dad who brought their daughters. This is the
fun part of being an administrator, when your campus holds a community
event that has a large turnout and everyone is having a good time. We had
to give the announcement that Spa Night was over a few times before we
finally had the cafeteria cleared out. Then watching as the custodians and
teachers cleaned up so everything would be ready for school in the morning.
It was great team work. I believe this comes under Standard 4 School
culture (A) Knowledge and skills emphasizing (v) treat families as key
partners to support student learning, creating structures for two-way
communication and regular updates on student progress which allows
regular opportunities to exist for both families and the community to engage
with the school and participate in school functions.

February 22, 2017 Mc Teacher Night

Mc Teacher Night is a fundraising activity for our campus. Teachers,

administrators, and other support staff work in a Mc Donalds restaurant in
various capacities (drive-thru, order taking, cleaning tables, monitoring the
play place, delivering food to customers dining in, and selling cookies). I had
the pleasure of selling cookies to both the dine-in customers as well as to the
customers going through the drive-thru. Seeing how excited our students
get when they see you outside of school and especially as someone who is
taking their order or delivering their food was neat. I enjoyed watching
students faces as their parents allowed them to pay for their own cookies.
The time flew by very quickly and the school not only was visible to the
community in a different way, we also earned money for the school activity
fund. I believe this comes under Standard 4 School culture (A) Knowledge
and skills emphasizing (v) treat families as key partners to support student
learning, creating structures for two-way communication and regular updates
on student progress which allows regular opportunities to exist for both
families and the community to engage with the school and participate in
school functions.

3/31/2017 Honorary Volunteer Meeting

I was tasked with getting a parent volunteer of the year nominated, voted
on, and submitted for our campus. After meeting with and confirming with a
few of my colleagues, I decided to send out a campus wide email requesting
staff to submit a name of someone they felt would be a good representative
of volunteer of the year for our school. Included in the email was the
criterion the district was looking for (not a district employee, a couple of
sentences telling why the person being nominated should be, and what they
did). When you send out an all staff email, it is very important that it is
worded correctly so what you are requesting is fully understood. This is
especially true when it involves a parent volunteer to represent our campus.
I believe this comes under Standard 4 School culture (A) Knowledge and
skills emphasizing (v) treat families as key partners to support student
learning, creating structures for two-way communication and regular updates
on student progress which allows regular opportunities to exist for both
families and the community to engage with the school and participate in
school functions.

April 3 and 6, 2017 Honorary Volunteer Meeting

After sending out the email requesting nominations for a parent volunteer of
the year and receiving a few nominations, I had another meeting with a
couple of colleagues to discuss the names submitted. I then sent out
another email this time with voting buttons listing the attributes of each of
the nominees. The voting went well and I was able to submit to my principal
the name of the parent nominated to represent our campus as volunteer of
the year. I also created certificates for all the people nominated. It was a
good turn-out. I believe this comes under Standard 4 School culture (A)
Knowledge and skills emphasizing (v) treat families as key partners to
support student learning, creating structures for two-way communication and
regular updates on student progress which allows regular opportunities to
exist for both families and the community to engage with the school and
participate in school functions.
4/7/2017 Walk with the Head Custodian

I went into work at 5:30 a.m. so I could follow our head custodian. I went
with her as she turned on lights, unlocked doors and did her routine checks
of all the things the evening custodians do. It was a very enlightening
experience. She moved fast and was very thorough. She ensured
bathrooms in all grade level pods had been cleaned, had toilet paper, sinks
cleaned, and water fountains cleaned and wiped down. When things werent
done the night before that should have, she made detailed notes so she
could inform those under her of what they needed to accomplish before they
left. She is also in charge of keeping track of how much copy paper is being
used and making sure there is enough copy paper in the copy room for
teachers. There are so many details that most people never concern
themselves with. It is all just expected to be done.

4/10/2017 Contacting Parents for Masterful Mentors

It was a long and arduous task calling all of the parents who had completed
the Masterful Mentor survey. I had to contact to find out if they had already
gone through the district on-line volunteer training which clears them to
have contact with school children. A few had, however, most had not.
Several dads thought it would take too long; however, I assured them that it
took no more than 20 minutes. The responses were very positive and
enthusiasm over the program. It was worth the time it took to contact these
parents.

4/11/2017 5th Grade Field Trip

Planning and organizing the 5th grade field trip was only the beginning.
Making sure we had the number of students that were going so the campus
secretary could cut a check for the exact amount, ensuring the correct
number of buses had been ordered, and finally getting everything cleared at
the registration desk was a huge endeavor. It was all worth it in the end,
even when we were off by student from what the registration desk had listed.
The error was corrected without any fuss and the trip went very well. We
had happy students, teachers, and parents chaperones.

reports is also the responsibility of the head custodian. It is all just expected
to be done.

February 16, 2017 District Board Meeting

The meeting was called to order by the board president. After one of the
districts JROTC color guard presented the colors, members of the community
were invited up to the microphone if they had signed up previously to do so.
Kudos for one of the schools was offered by my several community members
as well as teachers from that school telling how terrific their school was. It
was nice to hear praises of a campus and how proud people are of their
school programs and student achievements. Not all the items listed on the
agenda were considered as the board went behind closed doors to confer
with attorneys. The public was not privy to the closed-door proceedings. I
believe this comes under Standard 5 Strategic Operations (A) Knowledge
and skills emphasizing (V)treat central office staff as partners in achieving
goals and collaborate with staff throughout the district to adapt policies as
needed to meet the needs of students and staff. Observing the various
actions taken by the school board to ensure the overall effectiveness the

enlightening than the last one. I was amazed at how much back and forth
discussion there was over even minute items. One board member
questioned everything that was brought to the table. Every single aspect
was questioned and re-questioned before approval. As a tax-paying member
of our district, I appreciated how much discussion and questioning went on
before committing the district to any monies. I believe this comes under

4/6/2017 Employee Recognition Ceremony

District employees are recognized for being employed with the district at 5,
10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 40 years. This year I went to the recognition
ceremony as an administrative representative. It was truly great getting the
honor those who have shown such loyalty to our school district. It shows
that teachers are choosing to stay, grow, and develop their skills with our
district. I believe this comes under Standard 5 Strategic Operations (IV)
leaders are deliberate in the allocation of resources (e.g., staff time, dollars,
and tools).
