Literacy Lesson Plan for Beginning Reader:
Through the literacy assessment, Zoie demonstrated that she had concept of words, which is the key
characteristics of a beginner reader.

Time for this part of lesson: 19 minutes for fluency - This portion on the lesson plan is combined with
comprehension which is 6 minutes and 12 minutes for fluency
Procedure: Student should be sitting beside the adult who will partake in the unison reading. Student
will have a popsicle stick to help guide them when the time comes for them to join reading. Adult should
read the book first modeling fluent reading. Before reading ask the student what he/she may think might
happen in the book by looking at the front cover. Have the student predict what might happen
throughout the story. Then, reread the book inviting student to read along when they recognize familiar
words. Once the story has been read again, ask the student If they could retell the story. Continue to
reread the book encouraging student to read along each time. Once read several times, student should be
able to read the book independently.

Time for this part of lesson: 6 minutes

Procedure: Student will have small whiteboard marker and tissue. The teacher will call out a word from
their sight words list, CVC or CCVC. Student is to write the word on the board and then flip it over to be
checked by the teacher. Encourage students to try and stretch words to hear each sound it makes.

Procedure: Have the student open to an empty page in their journal. Instruct them to write a few simple
sentences creating a short story. Students may be prompted by asking them to talk about what they did
the previous day, what they do after school, their favorite thing to do Etc. Once the student is finished
creating their short story, have them draw a picture of what the story was about.
