Catalytic valorisation of biomass with solid functional materials has been recognised as a promising
approach to produce value-added biochemicals and biofuels. Furanic compounds such as 5-hydroxy-
methylfurfural (HMF), 5-ethoxymethylfurfural, 2,5-dimethylfuran, 2,5-diformylfuran and 2,5-furandicar-
boxylic acid can be obtained from hexoses and pentoses via selective dehydration and subsequent
etherication, hydrogenation, oxidation reactions, which show great potential for industrial applications to
replace petroleum-based chemicals and fuels. Zeolite and zeotype micro- and mesoporous materials
with tuneable acidity, good thermal stability and shape-selectivity have recently emerged as promising
solid catalysts, exhibiting superior catalytic performance to other heterogeneous catalysts. This review
focuses on the synthesis of biomass-derived furanic compounds catalysed by zeolitic materials, rstly

methylfurfural, EMF; Scheme 15), promising fuel additives,
when the reaction medium is changed from an aqueous solu-
tion to alcoholic solvents.144,145 The energy density of EMF is
8.7 kWh L1, which is comparable to that of diesel (9.7
kWh L1) and gasoline (8.8 kWh L1), and much higher with
respect to that of ethanol (6.1 kWh L1).146 Heteropolyacid-
and sulfonic acid-functionalised materials have been recently
demonstrated to be ecient in the conversion of HMF and
sugars containing fructose units to EMF in good yields (up to
91.5%).147151 However, this type of Brnsted acid catalysts was
poorly active for the synthesis of EMF from glucose; in turn,
ethyl glucopyranoside was formed as the main product in high
yields (91.7%) at 90120 C.152,153 The increase of the reaction
temperature to 140 C might lead to the formation of ethyl

sugars involving HMF as a key intermediate via cascade de-
hydrationhydrolysis steps in the absence of oxygen, wherein
formic acid was also formed in equivalent moles to LA.179
Strong Brnsted acids such as Amberlite IR-120 and HCl were
demonstrated to be active in the conversion of fructose or
sugars with fructose units to LA in water at moderate reaction
temperatures (ca. 100 C).180 Comparatively, high temperatures
(ca. 200 C) or long reaction durations (ca. 1224 h) were
required when glucose or glucose-containing sugars were
employed as substrates.180 The combination of Brnsted and
Lewis acid sites in appropriate concentrations was likely to
facilitate glucose-to-LA transformation by promoting the
