When Children Have Children

Teenage pregnancy is usually a crisis for the pregnant girl and her family. Common reactions
include anger, guilt, and denial. If the father is young and involved, similar reactions can occur in
his family.

Adolescents who become pregnant may not seek proper medical care during their pregnancy,
5 leading to an increased risk for medical complications. Pregnant teenagers require special
understanding, medical care, and education particularly about nutrition, infections, substance
abuse, and complications of pregnancy. They also need to learn that using tobacco, alcohol, and
other drugs, can damage the developing fetus. All pregnant teenagers should have medical care
beginning early in their pregnancy.

10 Babies born to teenagers are at risk for neglect and abuse because their young mothers are
uncertain about their roles and may be frustrated by the constant demands of caretaking. Parents of
teenagers can help prevent teenage pregnancy through open communication and by providing
guidance to their children about sexuality, contraception, and the risks and responsibilities of sexual
relationships and pregnancy.

15 Some teenage girls drop out of school to have their babies and don't return. In this way, they lose
the opportunity to learn skills necessary for employment and self-survival as adults. School classes
in family life and sexual education, as well as clinics providing reproductive information and birth
control to young people, can also help to prevent an unwanted pregnancy.

If pregnancy occurs, teenagers and their families deserve honest and sensitive counseling about
20 options available to them. Special support systems, including consultation with a child and
adolescent psychiatrist when needed, should be available to help the teenager throughout the
pregnancy, the birth, and the decision about whether to keep the infant or give it up for adoption.
There may be times when the pregnant teenager's emotional reactions and mental state will require
referral to a qualified mental health professional.

The Comenius Programme

The Comenius Programme is named after Jan Amos Comenius (1592-1670), often considered
the father of modern education. Comenius is aimed at schools, colleges and local authorities
across Europe. Its objectives are: developing knowledge and understanding among young
people of the diversity of European cultures and languages; helping young people to acquire
5 basic skills and competences for their personal development, for future employment and for
active European citizenship.
Here is the statement of a former Comenius student:

I can still remember the day when our English teacher informed us about the Comenius project. My
personal experience was very exciting. I travelled with three of my partners to Italy and we had a
10 wonderful time there. We made new friends and had a great time with them. We met boys and girls
from Germany, Lithuania, Latvia and Turkey and kids from Italy who were very friendly and nice to
everyone. I had an English lesson with the Italian kids and we were talking about our city, our
customs and generally how the youth of our country spend their free time. We also talked and
shared opinions on our cultures. We all learned many things about the other cultures and we were
15 told to do projects about the cultures of the other countries. I was assigned to do a project about
the flora and the fauna of Italy and it was really fascinating. In the beginning of our trip we stayed
for one night in the beautiful city of Venice and at the end of our trip we spent a couple of hours in
the city waiting for our flight. During our visit in Italy we visited Ferrara and Padova which were
great cities with very nice people. And at last our trip ended with tears of happiness because we
20 were being separated from our new friends with whom we had a great time the previous four days.
I will never forget what I did in Italy or generally in the project because I had a great time with
nice kids from all over Europe and from different nationalities and we all had the chance to learn
how life outside our country is. I think that after this experience everyone in the project will have a
different view on life.

The negative side of Piercings and tattoos

Piercings and tattoos have been around for centuries, and can have cultural significance for a
person. Because teens are experimenting with their identities, they may be drawn to piercings or
tattoos as a form of expression or rebellion. Unlike some forms of self-expression like hair coloring
or clothing, however, piercings and tattoos leave permanent marks, and can have negative side
5 effects. They can also be a sign of deviant behavior or mental health problems in teens. Sometimes
piercings or tattoos are a form of self-injury or self-harm, resulting from teens trying to express
their negative feelings or seeking attention or help.
In many states, teens need their parents permission to legally get a tattoo or piercing. If a teen is
going to get a piercing or tattoo, he /she should be certain they are doing it safely. The shop should
10 be clean and the person doing the tattoo or piercing should know what they are doing and exercise
proper sanitation.

Other precautions for teens getting piercings or tattoos include:

The person treating you should wash their hands thoroughly first and should wear clean
disposable gloves.
15 The needles and dyes should be brand new and sealed in their package, or should have been
thoroughly sterilized before use with an autoclave.

Tattoos and piercings can have negative side effects such as:
Pain during the procedure and while the tattoo or piercing is healing
Allergic reactions
20 Difficulty finding a job
Removing tattoos can be expensive and painful, and usually does not leave the area looking
completely healed. When piercings are removed they can leave scars and holes, and if they are
accidentally ripped out the resulting injuries can cause deformities.

PART 2 Reading comprehension

1. Read the text attentively.

Eating disorders
Although society tends to stereotype eating disorder sufferers as adult females, these conditions
affect all types of people. For example, the National Institute of Mental Health attests that men
account for 5- to 15-percent of anorexics and up to 35-percent of those with binge-eating disorder.
Eating disorders aren't just an adult issue, either. Among children and teenagers, as many as two in
5 100 suffer from some sort of eating disorder.
These figures are particularly scary when you consider the long-term-and often irreversible-effects
of eating disorders. Externally, these illnesses can cause hair loss, tooth decay, bloating and, of
course, extreme weight loss. And the internal effects of eating disorders are even more severe.
Females with eating disorders are more likely to stop menstruating, and to become infertile. These
10 illnesses can cause heart and circulatory problems ranging from anemia to cardiac arrest, and major
organ problems, like painful kidney stones, and potentially deadly pancreas inflammation. A high
percentage of people with eating disorders die without treatment, according to the National
Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders.
While this is disheartening, treatment options are both numerous and effective! Many people with
15 these illnesses find relief from ongoing psychotherapy, nutritional counseling, and medical
supervision. If you believe that you or someone you care about is suffering from an eating disorder,
PLEASE: Make an appointment with a doctor immediately!
