Worksheet: Help Ms. LaPrade

Below are three elimination problems Ms. LaPrade tried to do on her

own. However, she made a few mistakes! On a separate sheet of
paper, describe the mistakes she made in each problem and then solve
the problems correctly!

Problem 1 Problem 2 Problem 3

1. 2x+3y=4 1. 4x-4y=12 1. y+x=2
4x+6y=8 3x+2y=4 y-x=2

2. 4x+6y=8 2. 4x-4y=12 2. 0=2

4x+6y=8 6x+4y=4
3. no solution
3. 12x=0 2. -2x=-6

4. x=0 3. x=3

5. y=3/4 4. y=0

6. (0, ) 5. (3,0)

Worksheet: Elimination Word Problems

Solve these three word problems on a separate sheet of
paper. Show all of your work!

1. Two times a number plus three times another number equals 13.

The sum of the two numbers is 7. What are the numbers?

2. Three times a number minus 4 times a number equals 0. The

difference of the two numbers is 1. What are the numbers?

3. Two times a number minus another number equals negative five.

The sum of the two numbers is negative one. What are the

numbers?
Worksheet: What Method Do I Use?
Decide what method to use for each system and explain why you
chose that method. Method options are: graphing, substitution,
elimination with addition and multiplication. Then pick any three to
solve.

1. 2x+4y=6
3x+5y=10

2. y=2x-3
y+x=12

3. y=3/2x+4
y=2x-4

4. x+y=0
x+y=2

5. 5x-10y=20
10x-20y=40

6. 4x+y=5
2x+y=17
Foldable Instructions:
Follow these steps to create your foldable. Show completed foldable to

teacher when finished to be checked for correctness.

1. Fold your piece of paper hotdog style, leaving about an inch at

the top of the paper for hole-punches and labels. (See example

for help)
2. Draw four lines on the top flap of your foldable to split the

foldable into 5 sections.

3. Cut along the lines to create 5 flaps.
4. Label the flaps as follows, in order:
a. Step 1: Write equations in standard form
b. Step2: Pick variable to cancel out and find LCM of the

coefficients of the variable you cancel

c. Step 3: Multiply each equation so that coefficients of the

variable will be same number but different signs.

d. Step 4: Add and solve for one variable
e. Step 5: Solve for the other variable and check!
5. On the inside of the flaps, write problem #1 from the 7.4 notes

we took yesterday. The steps you write inside the flaps should

correspond to the steps you have written on the outside of the

flaps.
